Run Down And Killed For Gas $$
(AP) The case of an Alabama gas station owner run down Friday and killed by a driver who police believe was escaping with $52 worth of fuel comes as no shock to U.S. industry experts.
<snip>
"As the price of gas climbs, people's values decline," said Jeff Lenard, spokesman for the National Association of Convenience Stores.
<snip>
Lenard said the death of Husain "Tony" Caddi, 54, has captured national media attention for two reasons: It shows that soaring gas prices make people angry enough to steal, and gas retailers are tired of putting up with it.
<snip>
On average, one in every 1,100 gasoline fill-ups was a gas theft last year, the group said. With about one cent per 1 gallon as profit, a retailer would have to sell an extra 3,000 gallons to offset each $30 stolen, Lenard said.

Both retailers and consumers are beginning to lash out, experts warned

This sort of thing will make more headlines in the coming weeks and months as people are starting to feel the squeeze.

1. $52.00 worth of gas

It wasn't a VW he was filling up. I'll bet money it was an SUV. My sister's van is taking $55 to fill up when empty. I'd filled up my Jetta yesterday - damn near dry $26.00.

Edit: 'Oh yeah; how'd I miss this! "A search for the driver and a gold or tan Jeep-style SUV continued Monday.

Values.

4. That was my first thought exactly.
A local DJ mentioned that he spends $60 to fill up his SUV. And only gets about 11 miles per gallon - poor dear.

9. That's less than 20 gallons
A big car, like a Caprice Classic or a Crown Vic, will take $52 worth of gas easy if you run it until the "fill me up now!" light comes on.

Um...NO.

The sort of person who would run down another human being for $52 worth of gas, didn't have any real values to begin with...they just hadn't calculated the risk/reward was worth it before.

Jeff Lenard: What an ultra-maroon.

8. Would make more sense for station owners to have pre-pay.
Eliminates any drive offs.

5. Spokesperson for the N'tl Assoc. of Covenience Stores?
I wonder what qualifies one for that job?

Anyway, back to our regular programming...BTW, a penny per gallon is a pathetic profit margin.

Screwing the working person who dispenses the "black gold" for the oil hogs. MKJ

7. You're right...I guess every job has some sort of professional
organization.

I guess I was expecting an organization of Petroleum Distrubutors or something like that to be speaking to this incident.

I think the National Association of Wiccans would be a tough gig. :hi:
