Did anyone see the finale of 6 Feet Under on HBO????
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 11:31 AM by Laura PackYourBags
My god, that was the most emotional, creative, deep, stirring, moving, piece of tv (or cinema) I believe I ever seen. They all deserve every award possible.

I loved it when Claire told her boyfriend she was leaving: "Promise me, promise me, go straight to Canada when Bush invades Iran."

2. you might enjoy reading the "obituaries" of the characters here...

http://www.hbo.com/sixfeetunder/obituary/episode63.shtml

(notice that Keith died "at work" when he was actually shot to death in a robbery)... and that Brenda remarried and had another kid!

5. I was interested in the ambiguity of the flash-forwards.
Were they intended to be "real", or simply Claire's imagination? A bit like the frequent appearances of the dead characters. I've always felt those apparitions were most sensible as the projections of the living, but I like it that they never felt the need to resolve the question.

or deconstructionsts, what do we care what the author THINKS he meant.... the text, the text... :)

My son is convinced it was all Claire's imagination.

21. Very interesting thought. You should post that idea on the SFU
website at hbo. I've been reading there for an hour and no one else thought of that, that I saw. Like she was thinking all the way to NY about how everyone's life would end.

But, I guess it does make more sense that people think she was on her deathbed, since she outlived everyone, and was flashing back. Especially when Nate tells Claire that she can't take a picture of the family on the steps because it "had already happened" (apparently telling her this while he was escorting her to death). And the title of the finale was "Everyone's Waiting"

27. Ah, that would explain Nate's comment. I couldn't make sense of it.
That episode, for that matter, the entire series, brings to mind a short story by Margaret Atwood, "Happy Endings"

The only authentic ending is the one provided here: John and Mary die. John and Mary die. John and Mary die.

So much for endings. Beginnings are always more fun. True connoiseurs, however, are known to favor the stretch in between, since it's the hardest to do anything with.

30. Thanks for posting the obituaries.
I still mourn the ending of SFU, it was a unique show with characters and subject matter that really touched/haunted me.

3. Yeah, that was a great finale.
I'm not a big fan of blatant political statements in my art, but it was pretty much in character for Claire, so I can give it a pass.

Nice Prius too :-)

20. I'm not into the Western, but am looking forward to the Roman
thing. I hope they try to be historically accurate so people know just how a Republic became a dictatorship and empire. Good lessons for us today.

14. What I'm wondering is
When does the sopranos season start up again and curb your enthusiasm

I used to watch 6 feet under and at some point I realized it's just too much like a daytime soap opera for me.

the only nomination.

Every last one of them and the writers and the directors and the producer need to get every award there is

25. I could KILL Alan Ball for pulling the plug on such great TV.
It was intelligent, entertaining, AND not without the occasional political jab. I'll miss the whole Fisher clan.

Here's hoping Alan Ball has something just as good up his sleeve to offer us in the near future.

26. I was so afraid that Nate singing Rare Earth's "I Just Want To Celebrate"
might be the ending! "Another day of liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife....."
I know they did that on purpose to shock us and it sure worked!

SING ALONG NOW:

I just want to celebrate
Another day of livin'
I just want to celebrate
Another day of life

I put my faith in the people
But the people let me down
So I turned the other way
And I carry on anyhow

I had my hand on a dollar bill
And the dollar bill flew away
But the sun is shinin' down on me
And it's here to stay

Don't let it all get you down, no no
Don't let it all turn you around

Well I can't be bothered with sorrow
And I can't be bothered with hate oh no
I'm usin' up my time, with feelin' fine, everyday

31. Six Feet Under did what few shows can accomplish:
made the characters so real and so familiar you expect to spot them on the street. I'll miss Ruth the most. What a wonderful character. I'm so sad they ended the series.
