Thomas Jefferson Would Have Loved The Camp Casey Posse!
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 02:14 PM by DistressedAmerican
Anyone that spends the slightest time looking into Jefferson knows one thing, he did not trust the powerful.

He risked his life to end the abuses of power by King George. He watched as his country was torn by war and divided loyalties. When given the opportunity to work with the other founding fathers to establish the laws of the nation, his concern for limiting government power was right up front in everything he wrote.

For example, he wrote:
"The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive."

Following the Whiskey Rebellion he famously noted:
"God forbid we should ever go 20 years without such a rebellion..."

What he understood and many of us have forgotten is that those in power will abuse that power if not constantly checked by a vigilant citizenry. He understood that periodically the people must rise up in numbers and remind them that this actually is "a government of the people, by the people and for the people".

If we as American citizens allow their power to go unchecked, especially for long periods, corruption breeds.

Yes folks, TJ would have respected this stand in Crawford! I suspect that were he alive today, he would be there speaking against this new King George, Son of King George, this very day!

No one respected a good dissenter like our beloved Thomas Jefferson.

1. Couldn't agree more!
One of the reasons why he's my favorite Founding Father. :)

3. No one is perfect
but TJ was certainly more perfect than GWB. My favorite Jefferson quote isn't a quote as much as it's the Foreward to "America: A guide to Democracy Inaction." That guy is hilarious, even after being dead for so long :D

4. TJ is my all time favorite of the period
An extremely wise and practical man. He also battled the fundamentalists all his life and came out ahead. I hope we don't let him down by allowing the fundies to finish taking over our country.

(Is that a pic of Camp Casey?.....wow.)

7. Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Sam Adams, Tom Paine,
and all the patriots at Lexington and Concord would be at Camp Casey.

8. Yes, he would have.
Funny you should mention Thomas Jefferson, I've been on a Founding Fathers kick lately. Hamilton would have applauded it but watched it very closely to ensure the mob didn't get out of hand (ref.: French Revolution).

The reich wing forgets that this country was founded on progressive thought, i.e., enlightenment principles. People also forget that only about 20% of the population advocated breaking away from the British. The remaining 80% were just fine with the status quo. (Any of this sound familiar?)

Great quotes by TJ, btw.

10. Most beautiful pic I've seen yet, but I've been off and out for almost 2
days.

This is one of the best.

Thanks DA.

12. This is good, but I still like the other better. This one speaks it all
though. I didn't say anything, but on Saturday evening or maybe Sunday I heard someone asking why we had the Star of David on crosses. I heard it in passing and did not stop but I though to myself what an incredibly stupid thing to ask. "You think the only guys over there, fighting this unjust, criminal war are Christians?"

That was the question I wanted to ask, instead I just kept walking away.

Thank you so much for coming, for documenting and for sharing with us all. You are your sis and all of DU are special.

peace,
anarchy1999
