Will Cindy cost Dems another presidential election?

By GEORGE WILL

WASHINGTON - Sad yet riveting, like a wreck by the side of the road, Cindy Sheehan, a plaything of her own sincerities and other peoples' opportunisms, has already been largely erased from the national memory by new waves of media fickleness in the service of the public's summer ennui. But before she becomes fully relegated to the role of opening act for more durable luminaries at anti-war rallies, prudent Democrats - those political snail darters, the emblematic endangered species of American politics - should consider the possibility that, although she was a burr under the president's saddle for several weeks, she is symptomatic of something that in 2008 could cause the Democratic Party a sixth loss in eight presidential elections. That something is a shrillness unlike anything heard, in living memory, from a major tendency within a major party.

Many warmhearted and mildly-attentive Americans say the president should have invited Sheehan to his kitchen table in Crawford for a cup of coffee and a serving of that low-calorie staple of democratic sentimentality - "dialogue." Well.

Since her first meeting with the president, she has called him a "lying bastard," "filth spewer," "evil maniac," "fuehrer" and the world's "biggest terrorist" who is committing "blatant genocide" and "waging a nuclear war" in Iraq. Even leaving aside her not entirely persuasive contention that someone else concocted the obviously anti-Israel and inferentially anti-Semitic elements of one of her recent e-mails - elements of a sort nowadays often found woven into ferocious left-wing rhetoric - it is difficult to imagine how the dialogue would get going.

He: "Cream and sugar?"

She: "Yes, please, filth spewer."

1. Wow, Mr. Will sure has a short or selective memory
Hard to believe but it appears he's serious when he talks about "a shrillness unlike anything heard, in living memory, from a major tendency within a major party." Or maybe he slept through the entire 2004 election? How about the president's inept lobbying to do away with social security this year?

Just to name two examples.

2. wow, I thought he was scum when he stole Carter's debate notes
I see he has sunk to new depths by attacking the mom of a dead soldier.

4. Disdain for Sheehan topped only by hatred of democracy, and us
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 04:03 PM by Inland
You notice how he says Sheehan is only noticed because of the fickle American public?

Yes, all that antiwar stuff is a fad, like low rise jeans. Just dig in your heels, Bush, wait them out, go on vacation, don't worry about it, and you'll outlast them.

Will doesn't even deign to discuss whether or not the war has a point. That's for the little people to worry about, and nobody cares what fleeting thoughts THEY are having.

No, Will's entire point is to sell a column providing entertainment for the self appointed intelligentsia so they can feel superior to Sheehan, tsk tsk at her unseemly emotion and congratulate themselves on having a vision that's greater than any number of deaths and trillions of dollars.

5. George Will committed treason
He used his position with the press to steal Jimmy Carter's campaign strategy records and hand them over to Reagan. He should have been fired and tried. He's no one to criticize anyone.

10. I knew about the womanizing but not the wife abuse
Please tell!

The best part of the womanizing story was that the wife put his clothes out on their front lawn with a sign that said "take it somewhere else, buster." Love a woman who speaks her mind!

On second thought, who would want to sleep with this guy? Geez, not my idea of a love muffin.

7. What was the Right's witch-hunt of Clinton...
Maybe shrillness isn't the word I'd pick, but it was pretty memorable. Eight years and 70 million dollars later, and all we get is Linda Tripp tape recording an intern.

9. Just more proof that the right is terrified of our success!
:scared: "Smart Democrats will reject the shrillness from the left and pursue moderation...." (I'm paraphrasing)

Moderation, moderation, moderation....

Right, George!
