Ad dropped featuring nun holding condom
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan has withdrawn an anti- AIDS campaign ad featuring a smiling nun holding a condom after it sparked an outcry from Roman Catholics, local media said on Wednesday.

The poster, which shows the nun holding the condom with both hands and saying "Although I don't need one, even I know," had been removed from all condom machines in Taipei hospitals, subway stations and elsewhere.

"As a nun, I can't agree with their way of expressing things," a church spokeswoman said Wednesday. "This is a serious insult."

Nuns take vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and the Vatican considers all forms of contraception a sin.

Local media said the plan had been to use someone with a "positive image" to promote the use of condoms to prevent

AIDS.

There are about 300,000 Catholics on the island of 23 million people.

1. You know, I was baptized Catholic...
but I'm really starting to get annoyed with the church and its people. Every time I hear another example of a church-affiliated hospital prohibiting the dispensing of contraception, or another priest up on sexual abuse charges, I take another step away from even admitting that I was once Catholic. But don't think that I'm becoming protestant, either. Most of them are even more tight-assed. At least catholic girls were the biggest hoochies back in school LOL.

3. It pisses me off so much
My best friend works for a company that goes into inner cities with people like Magic Johnson (to draw crowds and talk about his life) to raise AIDS awareness.

I went with him to one event. I couldn't believe how many young people were infected in this city we went to (very very sad.... they were so young).

Anyway, they are usually set up through schools or churches and for the most part they can't talk about contraception (he's actually had better luck with two of the more open minded churches than the schools who have to teach abstinence only). It sucks..... these people are dying, can't afford the doctors care or prescriptions they need... for a preventable disease.

2. I'm a card carrying member of the Church of Reality
If the Catholic Church doesn't want to keep up with the times, they do so at their own peril.

I wonder, in a few thousand years, will we look upon today's religions the same way we view Greek and Roman mythology? Not trying to s**t on anybody's religion, but it's a legitimate question.
