It's no surprise - the east coast states always pat themselves on the back for being more "civilized" than the rest of us.

Don't believe the hype. It's all about class and culture and being from the "right" state.

What a surprise! Massachusetts and Connecticut are #1 and #2, respectively.

Illinois and Michigan deserve to be ranked higher, but they're "not our kind, dear".

26. SWEET NECTAR OF LIBERTY!!!
SENATOR Allen!!!

:bounce: Welcome to DU :hi:

Allen said it AGAIN on Wednesday January 26th the year of our lord 2005

Condi Rice’s confirmation hearing
1/19/05
http://allen.senate.gov/?c=story&t=press&story=2005011961776.859375

Because of President Reagan's steadfast determination, hundreds of millions of people tasting that sweet nectar of liberty in central Europe are now friends and allies," said Senator Allen.

On the 2004 election
10/10/2004

Ronald Reagan's election changed the dynamic of the Cold War from one of containment and co-existence to the advancement of freedom. As a result, hundreds of millions of people in Central Europe, once behind the Iron Curtain, now taste the sweet nectar of liberty, have joined NATO, and are true friends and allies.

Senator Allen's Tribute to President Reagan

But President Reagan believed the blessings of liberty must not be bestowed only on a few nations and only to those blessed to be born on free soil; Ronald Reagan, with the strength of his convictions, exported and advanced democracy to continents, countries, and people yearning to taste the sweet nectar of libert.

GOVERNOR ALLEN SELECTED AS "JEFFERSON SCHOLAR"

He also pointed to North Korea, China, Iraq, Cuba and other countries where "there are people who have never truly tasted freedom's sweet nectar.

But this is more a ranking of public school systems. It doesn't take into account post-secondary education at all (not that we would improve). It also doesn't take into account current demographics.

As a ranking of public schools systems, I'm not sure I agree with all of the issues listed, but it isn't too bad.

and we probably would come up a bit if they included post-secondary education. As a former resident of Louisiana, our community college system is light years ahead of them and Indiana (only two states I'm familiar with).

As for the signature schools -- Olemiss, MS State, and Southern; Olemiss and MS State have a decent reputation in many fields, but Southern is on academic probation by SACS.

a steady stream of "reformers" who undercut education out here.. Do you younger folks realize that until the 70's, a college education was virtually FREE for California residents??

A girl I knew in Indiana moved out here to live with her sister so she could be a resident and go to college for free..She did her junior & senior year of high school out here, free college, and stayed here.. The rest of the family followed..

Indiana had low in-state tuition that was covered completely by the Hoosier scholarship if your family had need and you had a B average and decent SATs (about 1100 combined I think). Four siblings and I went to either Indiana or Purdue with full tuition scholarships.

The 21 factors they use are all related to elementary school spending, class size, teacher pay, HS graduation rates, etc.

Ranking by State of Bachelor's degree or higher:

http://factfinder.census.gov/servlet/GRTTable?_bm=y&-geo_id=04000US37&-_box_head_nbr=R02&-ds_name=ACS_2003_EST_G00_&-_lang=en&-format=US-30&-_sse=on

WV ranks 33 on the "Smartest State" chart but ranks 51 for percentage of people who hold Bachelor's degrees or higher.

Massachusetts at the top. We do a lot of things right here, frankly.
In many ways, we're an example of what a good liberal society can be.

Which, of course, is why the right-wing constantly goes out of its way to belittle Massachusetts.

Of course, RDU, pulls up the outlying counties or rather, the rural counties drag down our average.

In my area (Cary), 60% of the population hold Bachelor's degrees or higher. The national average is 25%. I'd much rather live here, than in a rural, uneducated area such as Dansville, NY where only 9% of the population have Bachelor's or higher.

51. I take personal responsibility for making my state #50.
Daddy always said... "If'n ya can't be the best... Be the
best at bein' th' worst."

;)

It was tough...

I'll have to browse through this north-eastern elitist
ranking and see why it's so biased.

69. Woo-hoo IOWA #8
We're not really a red state, you know -- it only went red by 10,000 votes, in a stolen election -- and there are A LOT of freaky religious people here. However, almost all of south eastern Iowa is the promised land -- very blue. Iowa City has, I think, the highest concentration of advanced degrees, per capita, in the nation.
