Haggard will offer apology to Chavez (Pastor of New Life Church)
in Colorado Springs. One of the largest "churches" in America. Haggard is a very interesting character who was profiled in the Gazette a few years ago and he admitted to standing on a busy corner of Colorado Springs, Academy Blvd I believe it was, and threw Crisco oil on people as they passed in their cars.(It was supposed to be some type of "holy" ritual)Then they went over to a business on the west side of town at night to perform another cleansing of some sort and set off the fire alarm in the building. It freaked them out and they hid in the bushes. I wrote an editorial to the Gazette about it (which they refused to print:) ) and asked what would have happened if they had encountered a serpent while hiding in the bulrushes? Would they have picked up that serpent with all their faith and start speaking in tongues or would they have screamed out in fear?

Although Christian broadcaster Pat Robertson apologized Wednesday for calling for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, the Rev. Ted Haggard plans to fly to Mexico City today to try to set up a meeting with the South American leader.

Haggard, senior pastor for Colorado Springs’ New Life Church and president of the National Association of Evangelicals, said he was contacted by a Chavez representative Tuesday, a day after Robertson, referring to Chavez, said the United States should “take him out.”

In the aftermath, Haggard made a flurry of appearances on national news shows Tuesday, one of which apparently caught the eye of a Venezuelan friend of Chavez, with whom Haggard is to meet at 10 a.m. Friday.

Haggard did not reveal the Venezuelan’s name and stressed that the meeting is not sponsored by Chavez’s government.

1. Hmmm... sounds like a crass stunt by a publicity whore.
And the throwing Crisco on cars bit... did he cut a deal with the squeegee guys at the next stoplight? "I'll grease 'em, you squeege 'em -- and we'll split the take between us."

3. Well, I'm sure all the neocons will be out to bay about this
After all, private citizens aren't supposed to try to conduct American foreign policy on their own. All the conservative chuckleheads were in high dudgeon a few years ago when Jesse Jackson went to Libya to talk to Moammar Ghadafi and negotiate for the release of Roy Hallums on just this point.

Of course, Jackson secured Hallums' release. As far as I can tell, Haggard is trying to meet with Chavez just so he can publicize himself.

4. my new favorite blogger, driftglass
has this to say about that...

http://driftglass.blogspot.com/2005/08/you-miserable-slug.html

excerpt:

So I was listening to Dexter Gordon on “Dexter Digs In” making a very persuasive case for the existence of a Just and Merciful God, and working out a response to a point raised by commenter rosebuddear -- “...been dealing with these motherfuckers (oh excuse this language I am so VERY angry) for at least that long. I have been hearing them all say the exact same thing since the 70s...........
I never did figure out why they didn't get it.” -- when I caught the following headline on Yahoo News – “Robertson Apologizes for Chavez Remarks (AP).”

A gentle silence like unto the wee hours before Christmas morning falls over Castle Driftglass as I drop what I'm doing and go chase that down. Because , I gotta admit, I got pretty excited when I read this for, if true, it would be practically the first time in living memory that any one of the American Taliban who run the GOP had ever apologized...for anything. Swaggart and Bakker jump to mind, but only because of the maudlin velocity with which they hit the pavement.

And those were because it was about sex, which means that, if true, Robertson would have broken the First Commandment of Wingnuttery: Never, ever, ever apologize for anything where you penis isn’t a co-conspirator.
