Bad Language on DU
(Stop before you flame:I'm defending it!!)
I just wanted to make a quick statement to some of our older and newer readers that may be offended by the virulent language many of us are using in our posts these days.
You're going to have to forgive us a little. We are all EXTREMELY frustrated and angry; and this is our outlet among like-minded people (thank you Captian Obvious). Please forgive us and understand that we let it all hang out here to keep from strangling the idiot republican in the next cubicle who is calling our liberal self a traitor 5 times a day. You know what we mean.
Thanks to all the new people that have joined us here to fight the good fight; we are glad to have you. I especially want to welcome those of the WWII; Korean War and Vietnam War generations and state that we are honored to have you.(ALL of you from those years!). I just don't want you to be put off by a little language.
Thanks again....

1. Fuck you!
And I mean that as a compliment ;)

I have a terrible potty mouth, and sometimes I try to tame it but I like the fact that I don't have to here.

I agree completely.

just kidding.

I've been on DU for almost 2 years now and was a bit taken aback by the language at first... but, I was also used to boards about RPGs (role playing games like D&D), computer games, sports, etc where they are encouraged to be family oriented and anything worse than 'heck' or 'damn' was reason for tombstoning.

Politics is a blood sport for most of us and swearing goes along with the turf.

Maybe Miss Manners has a website that is more appealing to those who are put off by our intensity here...

20. If we could only learn to use foolish words to fight wars, we'd save
ourselves alot of pain.

When someone tells me to f off, it rolls right off. (maybe because i've become immune)
Curse words mean very little to me- REAL curses are the words that are intended to cut to the quick- to wound the soul. Demean the 'guts' of who we are.
I've been hurt FAR more by being told i "was the worst thing that ever happend to" my mother, than all the "littl b--h, stupid worthless peice of s--t" and so many others i won't bother repeating ...

Curse words are really pretty benign and lame. They are demonstrations of frustration. Just don't call me a bitch and think you are dis ing me.

Cause i consider female dogs to be among the most wonderful of people.

Words DO matter, and have power- most of them are not curses (in my opinion)

44. well, i'll have to
give you that on many levels-

"bless those who curse you"

i have actually said, God bless you, rather than 'curse'- but it was because i saw myself in their eyes many times. And because i have pretty shitty comunication skills- and because i honestly DO have a hard time being angry.... it scares the hell out of me-

But i HAVE had people say to me, when i questioned them- "oh, my, you've backslidden I'll be praying for you". And i do think they do- but it doesn't make me feel like they respect me as an 'equal'- rather they pity me. so, i agree. i think.

i'm screwed up today.... no surprise.

26. I'll defer to SCOTUS Justice Harlan on "Fuck"
"For, while the particular four-letter word being litigated here is perhaps more distasteful than most others of its genre, it is nevertheless often true that one man's vulgarity is another's lyric.

"Additionally, we cannot overlook the fact, because it is well illustrated by the episode involved here, that much linguistic expression serves a dual communicative function: it conveys not only ideas capable of relatively precise, detached explication, but otherwise inexpressible emotions as well."

Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 01:11 PM by Ladyhawk
The only real bad language is something aimed at hurting another person.

I'm re-reading The Grapes of Wrath and the ex-preacher, Casy, has this to say: "Maybe you wonder about me using bad words. Well, they ain't bad to me no more. They're jus' words folks use, an' they don't mean nothing bad with 'em."

Casy also had this to say: "You know...it's a nice thing not bein' a preacher no more. Nobody use' ta tell stories when I was there, or if they did I couldn' laugh. An' I couldn' cuss. Now I cuss all I want, any time I want, an' it does a fella good to cuss if he wants to."

45. YES! you
and i agree. when people say fuck, do they really mean sex?
when people say shit do they really mean doo doo or excrement?

I've often talked with my 11yr old about how words are seen as 'bad' by society, and that saying them will offend people, so not to- (detention for repeating the language of his 22yr old brother is not fun)- but i agree. Pretty silly that we get so ..... put off by what are actually 'nonsense' words- while tolerating very harmful or demeaning 'acceptable' language.

32. Fuckin' fuckity fuck fuck fucker Repulican shits. Republican fuckers.
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 01:18 PM by IanDB1
I heard Mister Conductor from Thomas The Train Engine say this on TV:

And words, you know the seven, don't you? Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, huh? Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that will infect your soul, curve your spine and keep the country from winning the war.

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, wow. Tits doesn't even belong on the list, you know. It's such a friendly sounding word. It sounds like a nickname. 'Hey, Tits, come here. Tits, meet Toots, Toots, Tits, Tits, Toots.' It sounds like a snack doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is, right. But I don't mean the sexist snack, I mean, New Nabisco Tits. The new Cheese Tits, and Corn Tits and Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits Onion Tits, Tater Tits, Yeah. Betcha can't eat just one. That's true I usually switch off . But I mean that word does not belong on the list.

Actually, none of the words belong on the list, but you can understand why some of them are there. I am not completely insensitive to people's feelings. You know, I can dig why some of those words got on the list...like cocksucker and motherfucker. Those are...those are heavy-weight words. There's a lot going on there, man. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling. They're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend with. And those K's. Those are aggressive sounds, they jump out at you. CocksuckerMotherfuckerCocksucker. It's like an assault, on you. So I can dig that.

And we mentioned shit earlier, of course. Two of the other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go together of course. But forget about that. A little accidental humor there. Piss and Cunt. The reason Piss and Cunt are on the list is that a long time ago certain ladies said 'Those are the two I am not going to say. I don't mind Fuck and Shit, but P and C are out. P and C are out.' Which led to such stupid sentences as 'OK, you fuckers, I am going to tinkle now.'

Expansion

Carlin later expanded the list to include the following words:

* fart
* turd
* twat

Since then Carlin's expansion of the list has included hundreds of words and phrases, including "beating the bishop," "yodeling in the gully," and the ever popular "Mongolian Cluster Fuck."

Current

In the 2000s, the words tits and piss are generally no longer prohibited from broadcast over public airwaves in the United States, with the word shit often allowed as well.

It is important to note that FCC regulations only apply to broadcast stations (which are licensed), not the networks themselves (which are not).

There are some great routines by Richard Prior and Margaret Cho that would have been great to share with kids age 12 and up if it weren't for the dirty language.

Especially Margaret Cho's talk about racism.

Although her interview on NPR is also very good. And I think it is free of dirty words and reference to fisting.

33. My only caution would be:
Don't give up your power of expression too easily, by casually using "fuck" and the other words of the "fuck family," when there are so many interesting and meaningful words in English. After all, if you use the most powerful tools when emotions are calm, what are you going to do when you need more power? You can always start yelling or repeating "fuck," but that might not make the point you want to make.

34. Profanity is probably the most misused word in the english language,
The root word profane means for church. Pro (for) Fane (church.) As a practising Wizard. I can also assure you that they are not "curse words" as long they are used to reveal truth. There are things in life that a person can see that just elicits the response, Damn! I have experienced that phenominon myself. That is a natural and truthful expression. It can be extended to Damn my ignorance I don't understand how that worked. God Damn you! Would be a sin. It's vanity and taking the Lords name in Vain. Thinking God would damn a person just on your say so. We are not THAT wise. Not even George is that wise. I guess that is why we have an Army. To do those things this self proclaimed Favored Son cannot get Our Father to do. We have ask for the miracle and only received lies and deception. ;)

51. Words aren't "bad", but the way they are used can be bad
I tend to swear, not a lot, but if I hurt myself I'll say "fuck!" or "damnit". It works itself into my language. Swear words can also be great for emphasis, as in "Turn off the damn TV" or "That fucking election."

I have taught my kids that it's not the words themselves that are "bad", words can't be bad, but it's the use of the word. It's just as wrong to call someone "stupid" or "lame" as it is to call them an "asshole." I don't want them using any words in a hurtful way toward or about other people.

But damn, if I bang my shin into the fucking table, you are going to hear about it!

53. I agree... George Carlin has spent his entire career
trying to convince people that these are just words...

On the other hand when my 10 year old told the doctor that the kid who accidently hit him with a baseball was a fucking jerk, I figured I better tone it down at home...

And it is now an official DU T-shirt. I curse to my college students all the time, well, not ALL the time. No one has ever complained, as far as I know. Why would that be? My guess would be that it is because they think I am a GOOD professor, and the choice of language is trumped by the value of the IDEAS and INFORMATION, (not that language does not have something to do with ideas and information, of course).

61. I've never used the word "fuck" more in my life until the past 5 years.
Things in this country aren't "messed up" or "screwed up"...they're fucked up.

Minor semantics? Maybe. But "fuck" is such an extreme word in public discourse. And when I'm talking about what Bush and this evil regime has done to this country...well, I get so angry that the "f-bomb" is used very liberally.

Thank you for this post. I agree....we're all angry and frustrated...thus, what some may see as intemperate language.

I'm just kidding. I only use when really necessary. Or when I feel like it. Whichever comes first.

Thanks for warning the newer DU'ers.
