Karl Rove's War Against Cindy Sheehan
By: Stewart Nusbaumer Intervention Magazine

To slander opponents so their political positions are discredited -- Karl Rove's doctrine has been immensely effective in defeating Bush's challengers; will it now be effective in defeating grieving mother Cindy Sheehan?

Dirty fighting is in their political blood. It’s their modus operandi. It’s their crème de menthe. By slandering and lying and thrashing they decimate enemies and capture political office -- they win, which means everything to them.

These are banana-republic-style tactics, where the media is intimidated, if not shackled, and accountability is nonexistent so anything can and is said. It produces an endless chase to refute lies, because character assassination has become the essence of your democracy. It produces not the free exchange of ideas, but a continuous bombardment of the deceptive and the distorted. It is Enron politics, and Karl Rove doesn’t lose in Enron politics.

Now they are eyeing Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a soldier tragically killed in Iraq, a grieving mother protesting the war from a ditch near George Bush s ranch. They want to slaughter the mother lamb to destroy her resonating antiwar message. They want to win again.

The Republican troops are coming together and the guns to smear are being prepared. Some activists are under General Rove’s command, while others are jumping on the bandwagon propelled by the Bush-Rove attack machine. The dirty war has started. Last night the Fox News fair and balanced commentators lit into Cindy Sheehan claiming she is running a circus that is dangerous for the U.S. soldiers in Iraq. This is a central Rove tactic. Hide behind the well-being of our troops, even when our troops are dying; honor the troops while denigrating the veterans. That is the voice of a moral vacuum without limits.

1. Cindy Sheehan brings out the worst in them
A few weeks ago, when Cindy first arrived in Crawford, I had a vision of her as a wounded bunny rabbit, and the rabid right-wing wolves just can't resist pouncing on her. I know this is a poor analogy, since its greatly offensive to wolves. Still I can't help thinking that her presence has served to draw out the poisonous rhetoric from the usual pustules of right-wing punditry.

Great article, I'm glad others are seeing this phenomenon and calling the right out on it.

2. Yup, I'm with you on this...Rove et al are a pathetic bunch
to attack this mother who only wants to know whats NOBLE about the Cause/War...

That she can think and speak with clarity...and Bushie Boy Cannot,,,seems to be the main reason he hasn't, and prolly won't, meet with her.

In the mean time, RoveShire, the Pit Bull with a geeky grin, has got the Brown Shirts coming to attack Cindy...under the disguise of being Patriotic and all. Amazing...

3. An important message to Karl Rove.
Fighting is not always the way to win. Sometimes, waging battle with someone can be your own undoing.

Men are not supposed to fight women. In particular, a grieving mother who has lost her son. You would be ill-advised to fight her openly. Every attack you make is loaded with danger.

You cannot do this by yourself. You MUST enlist surrogates, or sympathetic supporters who resemble Cindy Sheehan. It should be a Common-looking person. They must do your talking for you. The fact that you enlisted Bush's help tells me you are losing it.

Any false move and you will turn the American public against you. Since you desperately need their support to continue this war of aggression, you cannot risk alienating them.

You MUST show some class and try to be generous with Cindy Sheehan. The fact that you cannot resist attacking her again tells me your are desperate.

Better get out of Dodge.

4. I don't think they can win this one.
Just keep saying "How can they smear the mother of a fallen soldier? They are NOT supporting the troops." That mantra will stick in people's minds.
