Official Thread for Iraq Vets & Families Group
Ok; this idea had been suggested by me and by GloriaSmith. I propose a group to support those here that have either served in Iraq & Afg. or have family members that do. Another important function of this group is to keep a running list of those members and family members that are serving for quick reference and to send care packages.

Now; when I first suggested this someone jumped on me saying that we should support ALL those over there. Well; of course; but it is nice to have a place where we can offer help to those of us in pain because of having sons/daughters etc. in harm's way. (seeing as how we are one happy big 70,000+ disfunctional family).

So please sign in below if you support this idea for a group. Thank you very much.

On that note; do we have a veteran's group?

15. Anyone who needs a handknit helmet liner, kick me a PM.
I found a great pattern for knitting for the troops, and I'm almost done with my first one. It's more like a balaclava with a longish part covering the neck and lower face, but the opening's wide enough for the goggles.

Check out the pattern, the crochet version, and the pattern for the neck coolers for people who can sew at http://www.geocities.com/helmetliner/ (the woman running that site is also sending stuff over on the first of every month).

32. It's not much, but it's what I can do.
I just wish I could do more--shield them somehow and protect them. I pray over that knitting every time I pick it up and will get it blessed by our priest first before sending it, if just to make me feel better.

I'm so scared that the soldier wearing it will get hurt. I knew a knitter who started a soldier charity program who had made some slipper socks a soldier was wearing when the USS Cole was bombed. He was wearing them when they found his body. :( She's never really gotten over that.

20. A Change?
Name: Military Service Board

Purpose: This board is intended to provide for discussion and communication amongst active duty servicemen and women, veterans, and their families. Areas of discussion can include military life, military and veteran's benefits, fraternal organizations, or other matters of interest.

<end>
I support the above as it seems to be a little more open, but modifications or suggestions are of course welcome :)

I have a star, although I don't have any Iraq soldiers in my family.

I suppose my star still counts, though. I think this is a great idea!

25. Good idea --
Just send the request to Skinner, EarlG or Elad. They may be willing to set up the group and see how it flies - so long as there are frequent posts it should remain on DU. You might want to communicate how your forum will be different from the DU Forum on Veterans and Military Issues.
