Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 09:42 PM by StClone
Hurricanes feed on warm water and if the conditions are ripe she will feast once passed the west coast of Florida. Check out the current water temps:

1. Who sez she goes to the west coast?
She could slide up the east coast to the Carolinas, and out to sea...

i quote:

At 9 PM EDT...0100z...the eye of Hurricane Katrina was located
near latitude 25.8 north...longitude 80.4 west. This position is
just to the northwest of the Miami National Weather Service
/National Hurricane Center in Miami-Dade County.

Katrina is moving south of due west near 6 mph and this general
motion is expected to continue during the next 24 hours. On this
track...the Katrina should move farther inland along South Florida
tonight and Friday morning.

as far as wind, this is only a cat one, but the rainfall is expected to be problematical

8. How deep does the warm water go?
In Lake Michigan, during the summer, surface (shoreline) temperatures may reach 80 deg.F. Often if you stand in neck deep water, the surface temperature is nice, but your feet are quite cold due to the thermocline.

I was just wondering how the temperature varies with depth in the Gulf of Mexico. It seem to me that the heat energy available would be directly related to the volume of water and that would include a depth component.
