anyone read George Will today?
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 10:11 PM by grasswire
He has never been so impotent as today, when he could only fight back against a strong woman by flinging insults at her. He said that Cindy Sheehan was like an accident on the roadside that slows up traffic. That was the MOST cogent of his phrases.

Go back to Victorian times, George! Ya weenie! Here's a snip:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/24/AR2005082401835.html

Sad yet riveting, like a wreck by the side of the road, Cindy Sheehan, a plaything of her own sincerities and other people's opportunisms, has already been largely erased from the national memory by new waves of media fickleness in the service of the public's summer ennui. But before she becomes fully relegated to the role of opening act for more durable luminaries at antiwar rallies, prudent Democrats -- those political snail darters, the emblematic endangered species of American politics -- should consider the possibility that, although she was a burr under the president's saddle for several weeks, she is symptomatic of something that in 2008 could cause the Democratic Party a sixth loss in eight presidential elections. That something is a shrillness unlike anything heard in living memory from a major tendency within a major party.

Many warmhearted and mildly attentive Americans say the president should have invited Sheehan to his kitchen table in Crawford for a cup of coffee and a serving of that low-calorie staple of democratic sentimentality -- "dialogue." Well.

Since her first meeting with the president, she has called him a "lying bastard," "filth spewer," "evil maniac," "fuehrer" and the world's "biggest terrorist" who is committing "blatant genocide" and "waging a nuclear war" in Iraq. Even leaving aside her not entirely persuasive contention that someone else concocted the obviously anti-Israel and inferentially anti-Semitic elements of one of her recent e-mails -- elements of a sort nowadays often found woven into ferocious left-wing rhetoric -- it is difficult to imagine how the dialogue would get going.

He: "Cream and sugar?"

She: "Yes, please, filth-spewer."

Do Democrats really want to embrace her variation of the Michael Moore and "Fahrenheit 9/11" school of political discourse? Evidently, yes, judging by the attendance of 12 Democratic senators at that movie's D.C. premiere in June 2004, and by the lionizing of Moore at the Democratic Convention -- the ovation, the seating of him with Jimmy Carter.

1. Yes, I read it.
I thought about writing a piece to refute what he said, but basically the only point would be to get the rant off of my chest since I know he'd never read it.

He drags people thru the mud and basically calls everyone on the left side of the aisle a bunch of shrill incomprehensible extremists.

I would point out that the sheer number of shrill extremists on the right side of the aisle is larger in number and much nuttier than anything we lefties could dream up. Examples : Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, Carlson, Malkin, Swiftboat Vets, Rove, Frist, DeLay, Santorum, Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Jim and Tammy Bakker, Rev. Moon, abortion clinic bombers, oh yes, and Timothy McVeigh. The list goes on and on and on.

2. George Will's political myopia knows no bounds
When he accuses Democrats of an inability to have "civil discourse" he ignores the Republican penchant for eliminating discourse altogether.

The Bush administration has by all accounts been the most secretive administration on record. Debate in Congress has proven impossible --witness Sensenbrenner's handling of DSM questions; witness Pat Robert's decision to dispense with hearings on the uses put by the administration to Iraq intelligence; witness the administration's refusal to release documentation on UN nominee John Bolton.
Our Prez himself only appears at staged "town meetings" where his talking points are planned and his audience is hand-picked. Press conferences have been turned into lying contests as Scott McClellan and Ari Fleischer have turned "spin" into something that would have Josef Goebbels applauding. And then, of course, there's Karl Rove --the master of civil discourse -- who answers Joseph Wilson's NYT critique of the Bush administration's main Iraq casus belli by attacking his wife and destroying her career.

Under the circumstances, I find George Will's smary critique of Democratic "civil dialogue" a tad bit unfair and more than a little hard to stomach.

Perhaps Mr. Will should pull back from his "oh-so-erudite" critique of Cindy Sheehan and give us an answer to Ms. Sheehan's principal question. Why did George Bush send her son to die in Iraq?

That would make for an interesting "dialogue". I for one would like to hear both Mr. Will's and our President's answers. Maybe over coffee. Only I'll pass on cream and sugar from you, Mr. Will. I like my coffee plain. The same way I like my answers.

6. He's a salted slug. I'll never forget when his first wife put his
shit out on the lawn at their Chevy Chase home because he had allegedly been boning proto-neocon L____ W_______.

He's a wormboy who latched onto a piece of wrongheaded Catholic-Scholastic sophistry and built a crackpot career around it.

He is not a serious fellow, in spite of his bloviating about gravitas. He is what thinking people refer to as "a wiener."
