Was it noticeable, or just wishful thinking on your biased DU minds? I really enjoy watching these pukes get noticeably angry and flustered, a la Novak.

Turned to the side? He all but turned his back to the camera!
That was really the most amazing part! I didn't think he was going to walk off, but he sure as hell was upset. It was like the camera was on the wrong side of the set, he was turned so far around! What a maroon!

56. I noticed that as well
Have another drink, HITCH!

He looks like he's recently back from drydock, but starting in again. It will only be a matter of weeks before he turns up on the early morning shows, looking like he just rolled out of bed with a sheen of drunksweat on his face and his hair plastered to his greasy forehead.

He lost the point a time or two in that exchange...and I'm sure the sun was barely over the yardarm when that interview was taped, so either he is showing signs of his long term abuse, or he had a few jars of courage before he went on...

75. Along w/ tossing out a childish "It's been real" as he stood up.

Stewart wasn't overtly spanking Hitchens, like the recent Goldberg interview; he was trying to have a truly heart-to-heart discussion on the course of the Iraq war and how to be successful. Hitchens, though, got spanked-down when he mischaracterized Stewart's earlier bit ridiculing Bush's refusal to be honest w/ the public on the war.

Stewart was exceedingly impressive. And Hitchens appeared odd (not that he can help it, w/ his habitual skewed posture and tilted head), and propagandistic.

13. Jon dee-stroyed Hitchens...very politely and intelligently
No conspiracy theories, no voting irregularities, no nothing but saying it straight and to the point...Bush is not treating us like adults, and refuses to simply answer honest questions we have, as adults. He said it forcefully, eloquently, and he actually did seem to leave Hitchens dumbstruck for just a second. There really was no refute to what Jon said, and Hitchens knew it. So instead, he joked about Jon playing to his audience.

But make no mistake...this should be the news clip on all the morning programs tomorrow. They never have a problem showing clips from TDS, and this one is the one that deserves it more than anything I've ever heard from Stewart, or anyone else on the air today.

Flat-out perfect, Jon. Thank you!

44. It's a surgical-like evisceration
not of the war or even of the "rationales" for it, but of the manner in which we the people are talked to about it.

As JS said, Bush talks to us all as if we are children and then refuses to answer any serious questions. It's condescending and asinine.

People -- well, most people -- know when their intelligence is being insulted, and don't really care for it.

He told hitch "should we belive in platatudes and talking points, why doesn't the president speak to us like adults?" to which a fumbling hitch could only gassbag. Also, hitch kept forgetting what he was talking about, which shows to me he has an alcohol soaked brain and if he can't get his notes, he is useless. 19. Hitchens' brain is pickled.
He kept forgetting what he was talking about ... and had nothing remotely intelligent to say. Stewart nailed him on Bush's empty platitudes and talking points -- and told him that he was sick of the RW saying that the Democrats are blaming America when, in fact, they are blaming Bush for his incompetence. At the end, Hitchens knew he'd been had, said "It's been real" and walked off. Just beautiful!

Hitchens claimed Iraq should have been invaded because they were harboring terrorists such as Zarqawi and Adu Nadal -- and Stewart said he could name at least five terrorists in every country in the Middle East and that some were probably working for us! What a slam!

A must-see.

39. Why didn't Stewart tell him
Zarqawi was protected by us while hiding in the mountains of the No Fly Zone. We knew he was there and did nothing until it was too late. Adu Nadal was in prison, and we turned down Iraq's offer to turn him over to us.

So we have two terrorists, one in prison and one protected by our "No Fly Zone", and that's a reason to kill 100,000 Iraqis and 1,800 Americans?

43. Just watched it.. Jon was brilliant.
He played the guy like a fiddle, greeted him warmly, let him speak, threw a few jabs in to get him off balance, then when the segment was nearing the end Jon just let it rip. Checkmate.

... until Hitchens started throwing out b-s propaganda and mischaracterizing Stewart's bit earlier in the show ripping Bush for his failure to speak honestly and openly w/ the public.

64. I noticed that too
This morning when I watched a repeat of the show Hitchens began with the front of his chair facing the audience while his body was facing Jon. By the end of the show Hitchens was ready to bolt (ala John Stoussel) when the interview was over. His body language had changed, his face was red and he didn't look happy.

Stewart rocks!

60. the best political discussion on TV i have seen in 20 years
i'm not wholly dismissive of Hitchens as many here. i used to enjoy many of his articles in Vanity Fair back in the late 90's, and his assertions regarding our involvement in the ME have the ring of truth. at least i think he believes it. He's been to NK, SA, Pakistan, Afganistan, Iraq. He's walked the talk. He had a conversation with Stewart, which is more than 99% of RW pundits will dare.

He agreed with much of what Jon said, even, probably, the rant about * treating us as children, though Stewart didn't give him much of a chance to respond. Should have been 2 segments. Hitchens said the war is being prosecuted incompetently. It sure as fuck is, beginning with the entire strategy of a predictable, traditional imperialist Occupation. When he said there are people who want to do us harm, and not just because we did it to them first, that isn't BS.

I would love to see such intelligent debate on TV EVERY GODDAMN NIGHT, and not just on the fucking Comedy Channel. It was like living in France for 10 minutes.

Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 11:37 AM by MODemocrat
As for his book, Evidently, I just haven't read enough history about Thomas Jefferson. I simply cannot understand why Hitchins would even put W. in the same category with him. Some of you well read DUers might be able to straighten me out on that.

My husband couldn't understand but very little of what Hitchens was even saying, but we both enjoyed Jon's responses. It was one of his best shows IMHO.

84. From the little snippet I heard on last night's Daily Show...
... it would appear that Hitchens' new book on Thomas Jefferson is really just an attempt to cast Bush's directionless war on terror as something that Jefferson would have done -- as exemplified by Jefferson's war against "Islamist terrorists in the Barbery states."

I'll look for someone else's take on the book, since I have no desire to submit myself to Hitchens' propaganda or to support him financially.
