My fundie sister defended Pat Roberston
Remember how I told you about my sister Selene who keeps ragging on my about my social security disability insurance and that I should stop disrespecting the President because he signs my checks? Well she topped herself this morning.

She said were just jealous because Pat is so holy and he gives to the poor and we just want to tear him down because he's better than us. And that the tape of him saying the assisination of President Chavez is Dr by the liberal media to get the 700 club of the air. yadda yadda yadda. Grr I wanta to clean out my gene pool.
Seriously if you guys know how i can deal with this nut let me know. Zoloff and beer only go so far.

Not this is partialy copied from a post i did on mondo joes thread . I thought it deserved it on its own.

2. Oh yeah, he looooves to help poor Africans
"There was also, says Volder, the $7m he gave to 'Operation Blessing' to alleviate the woes of refugees fleeing genocide in Rwanda. Robertson's press operation puts the sum at only $1.2m. More interesting is the way the Operation Blessing funds were used in Africa. Through an emotional fundraising drive on his TV station, Robertson raised several million dollars for the tax-free charitable trust. Operation Blessing bought planes to shuttle medical supplies in and out of the refugee camp in Goma, Congo (then Zaire).

But investigative reporter Bill Sizemore of the Virginian Pilot discovered that over a six-month period - except for one medical flight - the planes were used to haul equipment for something called African Development Corporation, a diamond mining operation a long way from Goma. African Development is owned by Pat Robertson.

Did Robertson know about the diversion of the relief planes? According to pilots' records, he actually flew on one plane ferrying equipment to his mines.

One of Robertson's former business partners recalled that, although he often travelled in the minister's jet, he never saw Robertson crack open a Bible. 'Everywhere we were flying he had the Wall Street Journal and Investors' Daily.'

Volder counters that by diverting the planes for diamond mining, Robertson was actually carrying out God's work. The planes proved unfit for hauling medicine, so Robertson salvaged them for the diamond hunt which, if successful, would have 'freed the people of the Congo from lives of starvation and poverty'. The Virginia State Attorney General is conducting an investigation into Operation Blessing that is looking into the use of the charity's equipment.

Volder asserts that Robertson was 'not trying to earn a profit, but to help people'. As it turned out, he did little of either. The diamond safari went bust, as did Robertson's ventures in vitamin sales and multi-level marketing. These disastrous investments added to his losses in oil refining, the Founders Inn Hotel and a jet- leasing fiasco. One cannot term a demi-billionaire a poor businessman - but, outside of the media, Robertson could not cite for me any commercial success."

15. Alice Cooper has a new song about Pat
Just saw him live last night - fantastic show.

Dirty Diamonds
(Alice Cooper, Rick Boston, Chuck Charric, Damon Johnson)

It looked so good, your perfect plan
You had to get greedy to be the man
Now you're holding the bag, paying the price
Gonna get burned by the heat of the ice

Dirty diamonds

You rolled the dice, you bet your life
You put your trust in your trophy wife
Got stabbed in the back in the blink of an eye
She's in bed with the boys and the FBI

Dirty Diamonds
Blood soaked money in your shakin' fist
Dirty diamonds
Stone cold killers and you're on their list
Ah, ah oh yeah

7. Religion is the knot at the end of the rope for many
I was raised Fundy. Yes, it has scarred me:) I have a cousin who is a missionary, and her mother, my aunt, tells me to only watch Fox news because they are the only ones who tell the truth. This goes deep. My aunt lives in another state, so I don't have to avoid these discussions much. When I was visiting her last, I went to church with her and I nearly had to leave when the pastor led a prayer for The Shrubbery, and to ask God to show all these maniac peace protesters the light so they will see how their actions are hurting our country. I never heard political prayer before. I was physically ill for a couple of days after that. Somehow they forget all about the "thou shalt not kill" part. Mass hysteria and mass hypnosis is what I think! Bastards!

Lol I thought i was going nuts there for a while. One sermon they had was when they brought a doll onstage and said it was a real kid and asked the people thier if they were to abort it . True story. The pastor had them repeat the word no over and over again. Where do these nuts come from.
Note not every church is like this I know that. The episcopal church i go to now is a thousand percent better but you got some scary wierd stuff happening out there.

23. George Carlin nailed it with this attempt to modify
the Ten Commandments with regards to your line:

"Somehow they forget all about the "thou shalt not kill" part."

George's comment:

THOU SHALT NOT KILL

Murder. But when you think about it, religion has never really had a big problem with murder. More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason. All you have to do is look at Northern Ireland, Kashmir, the Inquisition, the Crusades, and the World Trade Center to see how seriously the religious folks take thou shalt not kill. The more devout they are, the more they see murder as being negotiable. It depends on who's doin the killin' and who's gettin' killed.

11. send her some information on robertson & charles taylor
sure robertson gives to the poor, he gives them death & multiple maimings, some in sierra leone had nose, ears, arms and legs cut off yet were left alive to be a burden to their families, & all so robertson could put some extra $$$ in his pocket

a whited sepulcher indeed

i won't tolerate anyone in my life who puts $$$ and support behind a man who promoted the maiming and murder of entire villages in west africa but it's easy for me to say, i have no family members who are taken in by this crap

my gut instinct is to have no more to do w. this person until she stops promoting evil, murder, & torture

but it's yr sister

might not be that easy

18. Tell her that you love her, but you have made a decision to talk to her
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 09:29 AM by higher class
only about family news or everyday exchanges about the best place to find a special tool or food item, etc.

Tell her that since you both think the other is wrong about imposed political religion, that you can't listen to her, but will be willing to talk if she ever starts doubting her leaders and heroes.

Then stick with it because you know everything she is going to say anyway since it is boringly predicatble because of its narrowness and echo qualities, plus the way it allows the brain to be shut down.

20. Dear Selene,
I'm sorry you can't see how you are being deceived by 'men' who talk about how Godly they are, but inside are full of all manner of evil.
Jesus told those who give with alot of public show, that they give not from the heart, but from the desire to be seen as 'holy', and their reward is only the public praise given by the crowd.
He said, about a lowly woman who timidly threw her mite- (a few pennies) into the "horns" outside the temple, that her gift was worth more than the thousands that those who made great show gave. Because she gave much of her meager stores, and those who gave what appeared to be much, gave very little of their abundance.
Mr.Robertson lives very well off the "mites" of well intentioned good hearted people, who give from positions far more limited than his. I am not jealous of his wealth, but I am sad to see that you think his public display, and lavish living are something that brings glory to God.
As for my disability support, please don't fool yourself into thinking that Mr.Bush has anything to do with the help I am receiving. As a matter of fact, he does NOT sign the checks, nor does the money come from him. Didn't Jesus say "blessed are the poor"? Didn't he also say to the "rich young ruler" who could be GW BUSH today, that in order to please God, he should sell everything he had and give it to the poor?
That it didn't matter how well he "DID" all the righteous things, his abundance kept him from being completely "right with God" and that man hung his head, and walked away, because he couldn't do what mattered most.
Mr.Robertson will answer to God for his thoughts, words and deeds. If you truly love him Selene, then I hope you are praying that God will forgive his greed, hatred, and encouragement to people of faith to do what "feels" good, rather than what is God's will.

If you see a brother sinning, you, as his sister, have a responsibility to go to him, and encourage him to see his sin, and repent. When you defend Mr. Robertson Selene, you are condemning him to continue to live in sin.

In Jesus' Name,

_____________

(i've been in this cult- i know the scriptures- i know the 'company line' i don't expect this would change anything, but it gets harder and harder to deny the truth, when people keep pointing it out.--- good luck. it sucks being on either side of this situation-)

25. Ask her that if this was all a lie by the liberal media
then why did Robertson make a formal and public written apology? Or was that made up, too?

Also, ask her to define "holy" and how that applies to Robertson. Tell her you want it in writing with all supporting "evidence" that shows she knows what "holy" means, and she KNOWS how that applies to Pat. If anything, this should keep her busy for a while...

Ask her if she is willing to write to Robertson to directly ask him if he really said anything about Chavez, assasination, and did he really issue a written public apology. Am sure CBN has a reply form letter for all those "worshippers" of their idol.
Here's the link to write to Pat:
http://www.cbn.com/contact/feedback-700club.asp

At the very least, tell her to stop disrespecting you by berating you. Let her know that you have listened to her negative attitude about you, and you still allow her in your home out of respecting the fact that she's your sister.

29. But, she hasn't asked Pat directly, has she....
If she believes in the bible as "THE SOURCE", then she should also be strong enough in her faith to go the source, meaning, Pobertson

Meanwhile, have some respite from her attacks on you by having her define "holy". As a retired teacher, I would probably thank her afterward, read the "discourse", circle mistakes, ask for further edification on certain points, all in red pencil, and then would return it to her for another rewrite with a note at the top that this first draft was interesting, but needs work.
