I don't know about the rest of you ex combat vets but one of the things I both loved and hated the most was those damn sandbags. When I was "humping" we were required to carry ten sandbags per person. Every day we filled them and placed them around the hole we had just dug and every morning we dumped them out and "humped" some more. Granted we see very few pictures from Iraq but when we do see some I rarely notice any sandbags. Has the army changed in how they protect themselves or are they just much more mobile and never stay anywhere but their main base. I don't know maybe this belongs in the lounge but it seems pretty "general" to me. Any vets have a different perception than me?

1. Hummers are the new foxholes... |

I dont think you see sandbags because the troops arent out in the sand, and there isnt really any 'humping' in Iraq (unless your a prison guard).
The troops are much more mobile now than in Nam. This is urban guerilla warfare, I think Nam was more jungle guerilla warfare.
Troops are carrying tire irons, and fuel tank patch kits, so they dont get their asses stranded by one of the Hummers, which werent built for combat by the way.

2. They use sandbags in the floor of HMMWVs ("humvees") |

as protection against blast (yes, it works surprisingly better than one would think)
