Sgt. Viscuso needs some soap |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 12:13 PM by TexasLawyer
and some toothpaste, and some powdered drink mix, and some books and magazines, etc... I just sent these guys off a box of candy and cookies, but my single box is not going to go very far with 110 Marines.
Does anyone else want to show these guys (and gals) some love?
It is very easy to send a care package, and very inexpensive. Mailing letters or boxes to APOs or FPOs is just regular domestic postage. The post office has "flat rate" boxes that are pretty big, and no matter how heavy they are they cost just $7.70 to mail.
Also, Media Mail is CHEAP. You can send a huge, heavy box full of magazines, recent newspapers, and books and pay around $5-6 dollars. Re-cycle what you already have in your house. Then postage will be the only thing you're paying.
Or else just write these soldiers a letter to say you are thinking about them and hope they can come back soon. There are LOTS of other soldiers who post their wish-lists on the web-site "AnySoldier.com" if you want to browse around for platoons from your state or for a different branch of the military. Single people-- some of these men and women are CUTE and very funny.
It's a great way to make friends and help out people in need. I get some very interesting e-mails from time to time.

26 Aug 2005:
My name is SSgt Viscuso and I have been serving in the Corps for 10 yrs now. I am originally from Buffalo, New York. I am a leader of Marines and would like to keep their spirits up at all times, especially in time like this.
I just want to say, "thank you for everything you are doing for the troops and our country".
Our living conditions change periodically. I can say that we do not have the convenience to pick up any hygiene products, food, or any other survival products. Reading materials are alway a plus.
Anything else that comes to mind will be great. Thanks again.

It's hard enough to go to the other side of the world and fight for a clear objective and a cause you understand.
I can only imagine being shipped out to broil in a desert and fight for ...
well, you know.
I love these guys and I feel so sorry for them. But in my letters and e-mails I am always upbeat. Morale is really important for survival.

I think it's www.anysoldier.us, not .com
www.booksforsoldiers.com is good, too.

Personally, I'd like to make every yahoo who wants to buy a "support the troops" ribbon prove they've actually done someting to support a troop before they can get the ribbon. I suspect that more folks here have sent soldiers stuff than the yahoos have.

5. Make friends with Kool Aid!!! |
|
I'm probably the only one who remembers that commercial...alternatively, you can make friends with Crystal Light, as well...
It is a good cause, and a good way to "get local" by helping out service personnel from your state over there. Unscented baby wipes are handy, too, to get the grime off a ya. Some go for those awful beef jerkys, but you have to be sure there is no pork in anything you send that way (none of Poppy's Pork Rinds!).
The more forward deployed they are, the more they need that stuff--the portable PX's just do not cut it.

9. Boy, he must be smelly! |
|
Phone cards are also a much desired thing. I know a number of wives whose soldiers have access to computers and instant messenger but not all families have computers at home. Plus, it can be much better actually hearing their voice and it always made my husband feel less stressed.
