ORLANDO, Fla. -- Computers models show Hurricane Katrina continuing its path toward the Panhandle over the weekend, making landfall as a possible Category 4 hurricane.

This hurricane is strengthening and it is going to continue to strengthen over the next 12 to 24 hours, possibly up to Category 4 status, Local 6 meteorologist Larry Mowry said. "This is a major hurricane."

The National Hurricane Center says that Katrina -- which is now a Category 2 storm -- could reach near Category 4 strength by midday Monday.

Friday's projected path of movement shows Katrina making a north-west turn early Saturday.

3. As a general rule
the stronger a hurricane gets, the more it is steered by the upper level winds. The upper level winds look like they're coming out of the due south....so the storm would have gone due north...

Apalachacola or Panama City anyone?

7. The prognosticators are out in full force....Cat 4?
KATRINA IS EXPECTED TO BE MOVING OVER THE GULF LOOP CURRENT AFTER 36 HOURS...WHICH WHEN COMBINED WITH DECREASING VERTICAL SHEAR...SHOULD ALLOW THE HURRICANE TO REACH CATEGORY FOUR STATUS BEFORE LANDFALL OCCURS. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH THE SHIPS AND GFDL MODELS...WHICH BRING KATRINA UP TO 118 KT. THE FSU SUPERENSEMBLE MODEL IS MORE
ROBUST AND BRINGS KATRINA UP TO 129KT JUST BEFORE LANDFALL.
