Can we revisit this issue? Result of another terrorist attack here
on the scale of 9/11.

Think it's likely?

If so, will Chimpy benefit from it?

I think it is more than likely, and it bothers me that we (our government) is just giving lip service with dumb ass "terra charts" instead of upping security on soft targets.

So far as Chimpy -- I really, really don't give a damn. Every thing that guy touches turns to shit.

If it did benefit him, he'd only find a way to fuck it up.

2. I take it you do not buy MIHOP?
At any rate it depends on what you think their ultimate goals are - I tend towards agreeing with you, that the Bush Administration is in a very dumb way tring to protect what they see as America's interests (using the most jingoistic definition of what those interests are) and are helping their oil buddies. So I don't see another terror attack helping them.

On the other hand if you believe their goal is to take America into a fascist dictatorship (or further into a fascist dictatorship if you prefer), than it's not hard to see how another attack could help them.

when 9/11 happened, that day on DU, I was one of a handful who immediately suspected the Bush Syndicate -- only to be shouted down by the masses.

15. OK maybe I don't understand the point of your initial post
If you believe they are willing to slaughter 3,000 of their fellow citizens successfully (which is a pretty impressive feat all things considered), why do you think they are not capable of capitalizing on future Bush-Made catastrophes?

I take it you think they are too incompetent to get beyond a certain point?

I guess i'm not understanding the use of the word Audacity in the sentance above. I know what it means - usually it's associated with courage or daring.

24. audacity as in boldness
do they have the nerve to do it again?

are they weighing the "what if's"?

Like the election -- they stole it twice. Each time without a backlash.

However, they may be afraid that another attack would cause a backlash.

If I believed they had successfully pulled it off the first time I don't know why they woudln't do it again - they don't really need to top themselves - they just need to remind us all that our enemies are out there and we must do whatever they say to keep safe.

3. I don't think he'd benefit.
One of the RW's biggest talking points is that no "terra" attacks have happened since 9/11 so Bush must be doing a good job protecting us. They would not be able to use that if another attack occured.

10. I agree with you Mutley. I hear that BS all the time on WJ on cspan.
I don't expect another attack on the US, but I'm also a very optomistic person about everything, so my opinion on that doesn't mean much.

I also think it would hurt Shrub because what would he say this time???

We're fightin' them over there so...OOPS can't use that one!

We're gonna remove Saddam...OOPS!

We're gonna get Osama for sure...OOPS, we've been tryin' that one too.

I'm callin' out the National Guard...OOPS, there all in Iraq!

After all the rights and privacy we've sacraficed to this administration in exchange for security I have a hard time imagining it would do anything but harm for Bush. But I also have to imagine that Karl Rove has perpared for another attack and his spin will be in full effect.

7. I don' t want this comment to turn into....
a 'I brought it up and it happened' type of thing (I am not really superstitious)...

But it is waaaay too weird that nothing has happened since 9/11 (except Anthrax, but that looks domestically based)

I mean, we all know that this country is not much more prepared now than before 9/11...the borders are a joke. There is just too many entry points for them to cover..it is near impossible....a logistical nightmare.

Why hasn't a bomb gone off in a shopping mall or on a subway/train here? I don't believe for one minute it is becasue they can't pull it off (YES by using 'they' ...I am referring to Islamic terrorists)...Anyone can build a bomb with a little know how, household or easily obtained supplies and a little motivation.

So why not? Why hasn't Al Qaeda kept the momentum going after 9/11? I don't get it.

One possible explanation is that they know that another attack would boost the Chimperor's ratings and boost support for the war...but London got hit and they were more against the war there than we are here.

Any thoughts?

If they are only capable of pulling off attacks on one part of the world, one at a time...then we can't lose this war on terror...there must be like 50 of them , tops.

27. Maybe 9/11 was a one-off event
Maybe the reason there hasn't been much follow through is that al Qaeda doesn't really exist as an ongoing, coherent entity, and there is/was no strategy, just isolated Islamist cells doing whatever they thought made sense, and that 9/11 was a one-off event, one where they got freakishly lucky.

I've often reflected on the fact that if AQ really existed, and really had a coherent strategy, they could bring the west to a standstill with a half-dozen well-placed concurrent terrorist actions in a half-dozen places.

If AQ really existed and had a strategy, they'd have done this. But they haven't. In the meantime, westerm society has been reshaped by the fearmongers and powers that be.

I know what that says to me. What's that say to you?

- B

and into the goals of those driving this bus, I am of the opinion that whatever action necessary to attain those goals is viable. It is hard to wrap my head around the pre 9/11 thinking that these people were doing...still, so I will not under-estimate them again.

17. Oh that's easy to predict
Martial law would be declared, and the sheeple people would cheer.

We would go to war with Iran, no matter who the real cuprit was, and the sheeple people would cheer.

Those of us on the left, or anybody who dared to speak out against the madness would be Gitmoed, and the sheeple people would cheer.

And the last vestiges of our civil liberties, along with the last traces of this once great country would disappear, and the sheeple people would cheer.

All out of the fear and loathing that has been instilled into this country for lo these many years.

I was trying to think of how I would word the very same post. I don't know, it seems to me that the only arrow left in their quiver is a terror attack, thwarted or carried out.

They, would have to seize control immediately after, declare Marshall law, shut down this site and everyone like it. It's getting close to time they have to make some move.

More and more people are waking up, the chimp* is sounding very shrill and harsh these days, I think we are in a very dangerous time right now, if we make it through the next couple of months intact, then we have a chance of getting through this unharmed. Other than what's been done already.

I really believe that the crows will be coming home to roost by next March, things will be coming together this fall and winter and none of them look good for this idiot*.

Plamegate will be coming to a head, fuel will be prohibitively expensive, for both homes and transportation, prices are going up,
there will be the shop/spend guilt trip over the holidays, and people without money may resort to plastic without thinking.

Then there is Cindy, the longer * goes without meeting with her the smaller and meaner he looks, the pro peace movement grows daily.

Nothing looks good for these idiots, The more that the situation in Iraq deteorites, the better chance of regaining control of government, and with that the investigation flood gates will open.

Hell, if I were shit fer brains I'd be taking a vacation too, it's too bad there isn't an island like elba that he could go to and stay.

edit: spelling

29. An attack will come. It will help Bush. Flagwaving trumps sense.
I have no doubt there will be more attacks. They needn't be on the scale of 9/11 to turn the populace into warmongers once again. Just imagine a couple of suicide bombers in a mall, a church, a theater.

Gallant looking generals in thier camos; politicians vowing to fight; weepy newscasters; pictures of the dead; "proud" Americans decorating themselves, their cars, their houses, with the flag; throw in a few verses of "God Bless America" and a bunch of ribbons, and voila' were off shooting up some other poor country's people.

33. Agreed to a point...
It really isn't about helping Bush anymore, though. He's done his part, he's a lame duck second term president with low numbers.

Shit, at this point he's expendable. MIHOP, if it happens, will be about things like keeping oil trade in petrodollars rather than petroeuros, keeping a US hedgemony in the ME, etc.

Just like the present oil crunch/gas price crisis is about overcoming our congress' reluctance to permit drilling in ANWAR and off the coast of California.

Do you really think the Saudis don't have enough oil and we don't have enough in the US strategic reserve to keep the price per barrel down? You really think Hugo Chavez is driving up the price of oil with his bombast about selling to China?

Shit, the only thing being sold is us. We're being sold on the idea of "developing our own resources".

30. MIHOP or not, I don't think
a terror attack at this point would benefit them. At least not by bolstering their support. If they want martial law and just don't care anymore what people think, then yeah, it would benefit them. But as far as public opinion...no, I don't think it would help them. Supposedly they have been "keeping us safe." After the war, the patriot act, and all the other atrocities we've had to put up with in the name of "fighting terror" I just can't see people supporting him/them if we're attacked again. (Of course, I couldn't see how they supported him at all, even before 9-11.)
