2. Acetone
Edited on Fri Aug-26-05 03:00 PM by longship
Like alcohol, acetone is miscible with water, meaning that it readily mixes at the molecular level. When mixed with gasohol (gasoline + grain alcohol), it acts as a drying agent allowing the water in the alcohol to be burned better. It's used in a variety of fuel injection treatments.

It's also a valuable treatment to gasoline which is contaminated with water as it allows the water to be mixed with the gasoline and then burned up.

I'm not sure of the value of acetone other than that.

5. No
When I was in grad school, a student dropped a four liter glass bottle of acetone in a lab.

She cleaned it up without using gloves and without proper ventilation.

She died a week later of massive organ failure.

It was a real tragedy - and I'm haunted by this incident to this day.

Acetone is also pretty volatile and can be serious fire hazard if not handled properly.

(and its on Al Qaeda's list of bomb making ingredients)

6. No. Nor mothballs.
Sounds like some of the folk remedies they came up with in WWII to try and stretch the weekly allotment...

ONE OUNCE per 10 gallons of gasoline?

8. Not me, cool. Acetone dissolves WAY too many substances for
me to want to put in my car.

And I'm not too sure how clean it would burn. I don't want my car to make any more pollution than it does (which is very little).
