Justice Department Approves Georgia's Voter ID Law

http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGB970Q1VCE.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department on Friday approved a controversial Georgia law requiring photo identification to vote at the polls, and its opponents immediately vowed to challenge the measure in federal court.

The decision, written by John Tanner, chief of the department's voting section, says that while Attorney General Alberto Gonzales doesn't object to the law, approval doesn't preclude lawsuits against it.

"It's not over yet. We will pursue litigation in federal court," said state Rep. Tyrone Brooks, chairman of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, which earlier had sent an objection to the law to the Justice Department.

The Republican-backed measure sparked racial tension during the state's legislative session last spring. Most of Georgia's black lawmakers walked out at the state Capitol when it was approved.

2. I'm not sure why this will affect blacks any more than anyone else
We can get a drivers license as easy as a white guy can

3. The state should then be required to provide free photo
identification, just as the voter cards are free.......

5. Think about it
But it's not just a drivers ID that they will require.

They will be requiring what I believe is an excessive amount of IDs.

And poorer individuals, or at least those who don't have as much money as wealthier folks, don't tend to have as many IDs.

For example, I only have ONE photo ID, which is my non-driver's ID. That's it. What would I do if I lived in Georgia?

4. Poll Tax! If I cannot afford the ID. Then I cannot vote.
