The Problem with the Democratic Party...
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 02:56 AM by Peter Frank
Too many Democrats are predisposed to voice their opinions while turning a deaf ear to others with equal or superior ideas. While the Republican party is (for a time) successfully herding cats -- The Democratic party is trying to herd squid.

The Republicans have figured out direct mail (to a science). Republicans have invented code words & phrases that appeal to their bases. The trade-off they made for power however was to remand the individual to a secondary status.

With bold insightful leadership, the Democratic party will genuinely and entirely recommit itself to its grass roots; and in the process -- make sense to many disaffected and disenfranchised moderates of all stripes.

For America's sake -- get together, and get your shit together!!!

9. cannibalistic/incestuous feeding frenzy...

-- Cannibalistic in the sense that Democrats tend to feed on each other first.

-- Incestuous in the way that the abuse is visited on the Democratic family first...

3. Hey, I'm a squid! Gotta problem with squid??!!
I would not want to replicate what the reich wing has done. Sorry, it just ain't democratic.

I, however, completely agree with you that "With bold insightful leadership, the Democratic party will genuinely and entirely recommit itself to its grass roots; and in the process -- make sense to many disaffected and disenfranchised moderates of all stripes."

What is moderate is civil rights. What is moderate is rights for the working person. What is moderate is health care for all. What is moderate is agreeing that we should not kill our planet for corporate greed.

We don't need to undermine democracy the way that the repukes have done in order to make our point. We just need to vote in Dems who understand what the people want. Oh, and by the way, we don't need no stinkin corporations to back a real grassroots movement.

13. Sometime...
It's like talking to a wall.

Person A: "Folks, we're fighting amongst ourselves to much and we need to cut it out."

Person B: "NAH-EH! It's all (insert faction of party here)'s fault! I hate them! I'd rather see a Republican in power beofre someone in my own party who has a different take on a few issues."

Person A: (starts beating head against wall)

15. I agree the Democratic Party has no unity
I think this is due to the fact that th GOP base is made up of big business and the religious right. Big Business has no morals so they don't mind using the religious right to achieve their goals. Therefore no infighting within the GOP base. The Dem base on the other hand is made up of small business owners, rich philanthropists, certain segments of big business, lawyers, unions, feminists, environmentalists, racial minorities, religious minorities, gays/lesbians, poverty advocates, independant moderates who just don't like the religious right and I am sure I am leaving a few out. The problem is many of the different groups within the Democratic base only care about their issues and don't even always like the other elements within our party. It is much easier for the GOP to rally around a straightforward platform because they have a less diverse base. Say what you will about Bill Clinton but at least the party was united under his leadership.

19. That's What I Meant by, "Herding Squid"...

It's not a pejorative phrase -- it means that Democratic party leaders & members are indeed more fluid and diverse than the Republican cats; and therefore harder to organize. ...But it's got to be done!

The GOP has taken advantage of litterally every major weakness and cleft in the Democratic Party. Many moderates are sick of Bush & the general hypocrisy of the GOP; but they haven't been given good enough alternatives. Why??? ...Because no major Democratic leader has stepped up to the plate to honestly return the party to its grass roots! Many of them have slept with the same dogs as the Republicans -- and have the same fleas.

The Democratic party is ripe for a thorough house-cleaning -- and the first one who is succedes here will have a legitimate shot at the presidency.

17. Which Would You Rather Do???...

...Register on Hannity's forum & fight the good fight -- http://www.hannity.com/forum/

...or weakly fight with those with whom you have far less disagreement here?

(I was banned after 1500+ posts on Hannity, then reregistered & now post even more.)

Unfortunately, Rush doesn't have the balls to host a forum. If he did, he'd be sick of me by now.

Decide on where you can best invest your energies.

18. duly noted "code words & phrases that appeal to their bases"...
are all the republican party has to offer the world; yet 'the world', being vast, is clearly composed of more then their mere "bases". the resultant, at least imo, is the republican war on terror which is sadly void of either: leadership, promise of freedom & liberty, or for that matter "eternal vigilance" ala jefferson, who was himself keenly aware to 'code words & phrases'

the republican war on terrorism ~
