I almost feel sorry for the more rational freepers.
There are still some GOP supporters who are not complete wingnuts. This generates no end of debate on the "Free" Republic site, as the few who retain a modicum of sanity try to convince the fundamentalist majority there that evolution is science, that ID is not, and that the Republicans' anti-science stance is embarrassing to their side. A few are actually quite good and patient in this effort.

Their efforts are doomed, of course. Sometimes I feel a bit sorry for them, laboring in vain as they try to spark a bit of reason in a fundamentalist political movement that hates reason. It's long past time that everyone who respects science, reason, and Enlightenment values realizes that the modern GOP has more in common with the Taliban than it does with Thomas Jefferson.

Just like Nixon, when his peeps deserted him.

5. There are some very good evolution threads on FR
but there is no real debate as the fundies just make slurs, and then claim to be victims of viewpoint discrimination regardless of the fact that they cannot defend their position using testable hypothesis.

6. Anyone capable of rationalization
would not allow themselves to become a FReeper.

8. Au contraire. Rationalization is exactly what it requires.
In the immortal words of Inigo Montoya, I don't think that word means what you think it means. Rationalization is not the same as rational thought.

9. My Sister...
...is like those people. She is a Republican but isn't some religious nut (in fact, she thinks of herself as an atheist. I don't even go that far. I think of myself as agnostic). She is for lower taxes. I keep trying to tell her that she would be better off in the Libertarian Party since she would never be a Democrat, but she doesn't think the Libertarians win enough elections.

13. An atheist voting Republican is like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.
In practice, the difference between the Republicans and Democrats on tax issues is slight. For all of Bush's much vaunted tax cuts, they make little difference to anyone's bottom line, and they necessarily are temporary, since his spending increase means they are really a tax delay rather than a true tax cut.

There are huge differences between Democrats and Republicans in the areas of civil liberty, respect for science, and generally in taking a rational approach to issues. Tell her she should join the libertarian wing of the Democratic Party.

10. That same divide is also there for moderate Christians.
The people who believe that Christ wasn't big on..oh...starting wars. Are also sort of a tortured minority on FR. The perfect freep is anti-evolution, but believes in bombing people in Jesus's name.

11. Don't you think FR is really just for the extremists?
That's probably not what they'd tell you, but I bet most moderates don't go there.

I think we are a lot more accepting of all opinions here on DU, but even WE have some radicals. I've been smacked several times for just trying to be reasonable.

the very fact people would associate themselves with a disgusting piece of GARBAGE site like FR makes them NOT rational. If they had any sense at all they would NOT BE THERE.
