4. Thank you! Watching here in San Francisco at 1:40 AM
This thing is now a borderline Cat 5 hurricane. Hoping a mandatory evacuation order is issued immediately. And very concerned about companion animals; see this thread:

5. I think the Mayor wanted to issue it
But if they don't have a plan in place to evacuate the hospitals and prisons, etc...then they can't make it mandatory. At least that is my understanding.

Last I heard they were trying to get exemptions for certain facilities before they could issue a mandatory evac.
However--I just woke up and have no idea what happened while I slept.

33. Thanks for the kicks! I was looking for this.
It's just so eerie, ya know? Katrina ... one word sums up so much dread, and later will sum up so much ... disaster. Or so it seems.

Strange that with the forecasting expertise nowadays, we KNOW several things already about this storm. Number One, it's a killer. Of course that's not forecasting, that's history. Florida -- nine dead from Katrina now according to the latest word on it this a.m.

Number Two: Many more people are gonna die. It's almost like a war that way! The way we KNOW that some folks walking around and talking and thinking and feeling right now are going to be dead soon.

I HATE that feeling! Just like I hate it about the war. It's so frustrating, that we can't STOP it, and it's so hard for many to even get OUT OF THE WAY of it....

I hope a lot of people are thinking about their poor or elderly neighbors who have no means or no way to get out of town, or who have nowhere to go, no way to get to a local shelter even.

But that brings up Number Three: Even some of the shelters are likely to get washed away in THIS storm. They just said the Dome in NO will be open for special needs people and for last minute comers. And what if the Dome is blown away? Yikes! Schools are used for shelters ... I mean, what is SAFE about most school buildings? They seem to be merely a gathering place for those who don't want to be alone through this. Better than nothing, but not much better.

I really am praying, and I'm not a praying person. Any of you down there in the endangered zones -- WE ARE ALL PRAYING FOR YOU and hoping you heed the warnings and don't play around with THIS storm. Get the hell out of Dodge! NOW!~ :wow: :scared: :yoiks:

Thanks again for the link, Blitzen! :hi:

These people are doing the right thing ..... speaking honestly and passionately and in some cases begging their residents to leave.

scarier and scarier. This latest feed with these mayors from Jefferson Parish is unbelievable.

I'm praying for all the people that won't or can't get out.

45. 'you haven't seen anything yet until you see what we're about to see'
Here's some of the things being said in this conference of the mayors and cops:

one mayor just said, "Please, get out now. Get out if you can, please. ...

This is the perfect storm happening in our unfortunate scenario that we've been studying for years and years ...

I can't stress enough - GET OUT NOW. The levees will be shut down and there will be no barrier.

Please, please, I'm begging you leave. God bless you Keep your families safe. Our services will be limited because our personal will be evacuating..."

Another speaker - emergency services will be severely restricted and even eliminated - you won't be able to have the police show up at your door. The cel phone towers will go down, the regular phone lines won't work ..."

Another mayor... "we will be in the cities... our town is 11 feet above sea level but I'm asking my residents please get out. Get your elderly parents out. There will be no services - no phone, water, toilets, tv ...

"If you have a car and your neighbor doesn't - maybe a hardliner who was too stubborn to leave - you take 'em with you, do the right thing"

Now taking citizen questions:

Sewage, drainage, water service will be lost. Won't be reconstituted for at least 4 days. This is not 'waiting out the storm' - our services -

if you're staying, and we BEG you not to - have an ax, hammer, pick, so that if you have to climb up into your attic to survive - be sure you can make a hole in your roof to climb out so you don't suffer the fate of those in past storms who drowned in their attics

Please leave, WE'RE BEGGING YOU

Storm shelters - there are NO SAFE HAVENS in the greater New Orleans area, the Red Cross determined that years ago and left the New Orleans area - because THERE IS NO SAFE PLACE!

Police Chief - this is going to be the worst catastrophy. Anyone left in town is a damn fool. But the heads, the cops, mayors are going to stay - HAUL ASS AND GET OUT OF HERE! You should have left yesterday!

still the Chief ... question about Jefferson Parish ... we will stage our supplies to help ... staging where we think the need is the most ... Landmark Hotel mentioned.

Jefferson Parish mayor - can't call a mandatory evacuation, we don't have enough police to go door to door and drag people out ... I don't have the capacity to call mand evac - but you're going to see the most intense neighborhood push to get people out voluntarily

People of Jefferson Parish - please leave.

Dr Mastry (sp) - we've tried to demonstrate the threat over the years - the levees WILL BE TOPPED. The tidal surge will come in to our neighborhoods. Depending on the winds, the surge will be horrendous - our community will be SIGNIFICANTLY UNDERWATER

Every drop of water that falls on Jefferson County has to be pumped out - we all know that. So with storm surge and the levee pumps going out, the water will cover everything, for an indeterminate amount of time.

The pumps are likely to be inundated. They're either electrical or diesel - oil and water won't mix and there will be a loss of electrical power

I don't think there's any way to convey how bad this is going to be. 160 mph winds for over 6 hours with gusts to 220 mph - we have NEVER dealt with anything like this before.

Mayor - we're going to have counselors available to help deal with all the death we're going to have.

48. I don't know how they can say the eye is only 20 miles wide.
It's the same size as Lake Okeechobee in Florida, and that's 50 miles accross. Still, I've heard that the worst hurricanes have small, tight eyes. This eye is tight, all right. And if only 20 miles accross, it's small (since the average eye size is 30-50 miles wide).

My thoughts and prayers are with the people in this storm's path.

61. Hurricane winds still extend 75 miles in each direction.....
this is like having a 150 mile wide F-3 tornado come slashing through SW Louisiana only lasting MUCH longer and with rain measured in feet, not inches. Add to that a storm surge of + - 20 ft. with 40 foot waves on top of that. That's a 60 ft, high wall of water rushing up the Mississippi River over the levies into Lake Ponchartrain. The wind then comes from the NE and pushes that water into New Orleans.

This is going to impact EVERYONE, not just those along the Gulf Shores. The economic impact of this storm is going to be devastating to the U.S. economy, not to mention the loss of life in that area.

Folks, this event is going to challenge us all as a country much more than did 9/11. I pray bush is up to the task. For once, I pray he's up to the task.

This is the worst case scenario I have feared since the day my daughter decided she was going to attend Tulane University. Thank god we had the sense to keep her home during this, she was supposed to fly back to New Orleans yesterday. This is Freshman weekend at all of the Universities and Colleges in New Orleans. I can't imagine what parents and students, already stressed by separation anxiety, are going through at this moment.

The poor are going to take the hardest hit. Many don't have cars and don't have the money to evacuate. I hope they all get to the SuperDome, although I doubt they'll be much safer there. Many people are going to die from this, it's breaking my heart. I find it difficult to watch because I KNOW what's going to happen and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.

62. I think you may be visually measuring the "eye wall"
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that greyish circle you see on the satellite map is the wall...the clouds, etc. that spin closest to the eye. The eye is the little black dot smack in the middle.

I grew up in New England, have much experience with hurricanes. :scared: They were all wimpy compared to this monster.

I was actually referring to this motion graphic I've been watching: http://cimss.ssec.wisc.edu/tropic/real-time/visir/atlantic/visirjava2.html

I should have included the link in my post. Not long ago, I could see a pure blue hole in the center, looking straight down to the ocean. It was easily comparable to that huge lake in Florida. But now the eye has tightened up considerably. I have no doubt believing it's 20 miles wide or less now.

This feed works fine with just the external Windows Media Player, no web browser plugin required. Many folks without a correct plugin configuration can't see the WWLTV.com feed.

I'm going nuts in Seattle. My son is in N.O. and should be headed towards Houston. This coverage ROCKS! But the coverage on The Weather Channel is unmitigated crap. They run two minutes of teaser, show some idiot on the beach and then break for 2 minutes of commercials. They come back and give 1 factoid about this hurricane or past ones, give the local traffic (it's Sunday who cares?) and local weather. Then break for 2 more minutes of commercials.

This is the kind of crap Santorum (or is it Frist) wants to replace the National Weather Service?

73. He's getting out of town S-L-O-O-O-L-Y
Last report had him 30 miles from Baton Rouge, after nearly 6 hours on the road from downtown N.O. (Canal & Carollton).

Probably everything he left behind will be gone by time this is over.

67. WTF
a reporter just said they put 80,000 in the stadium for saints games but there's no way they're letting that many in tonight. WTF. put people on the field if you have to. This isn't a fucking HOME game this is people's lives. Where is our humanity anymore?

77. Five days? Could be that's very optimistic
unfortunately. I envision that, IF the Dome isn't blown or washed away with all inside, it will be an isolated island of stranded thousands with devastation all around for many miles. How are they going to get supplies through to them, take out the injured or dead if there are any, without the National Guard troops that will be needed in the days after the storm passes through??

Most of those guys are over in Iraq....

The ONLY good thing to come out of this catastrophe might be how it shows up just what a clueless "leader" we have in the White House......

I'm returning to the NO news audio/video link repeatedly as I want to get the local news about the storm's progress. Still appreciating the link!

78. Some of them stood in line for 6 hours.
It was taking a while for them to get checked in. They were told to bring their own provisions, but security had to go through all their stuff before they could get into the SuperDome.

83. Shortly after the handover to Baton Rouge, the link punked
It's intermittent now, and hardly plays at all.

Their coverage was excellent. Especially the young meteorologist. He was great. I felt as though I were there with them.

85. Shit thats kinda ominous. They went off the air
at midnight only 20 minutes after they fella said they can expect the winds to pick up above 75 mph at midnight. This is gonna be a rough night for them no doubt about it.

87. They said they were going off the air.
They said they were closing that station and people should tune in to their sister station out of Baton Rouge.

I don't know how to get that station.

86. They apparently have moved North to a college and set up a
station there in a communications dept. If you go to thier main page you can access the new live stream. They are running a bit of a rough show though as they don't have the proper equipment or staff to fully pull it off. They dont the meteorlogist who was so good a few minutes ago.

89. they cant fill the floor of the dome with people
they are keeping people on the second level and above. at least 35 feet up. They expect the lower area to flood. but feel the roof is safe so this is the best plan. predictions are that there could be up to 20 or 30 feet of flooding so keeping people above that level is the correct solution.
