1. Awaiting for 1am advisory for 'official' announcement
It's basically already official. The storm is not expected to shift it's central track. No shearing or weakening is expected either.

2. I agree. A lot of people in NO are going to die unless there is truly a
miracle. It's very sad. Many think they can ride this out.

7. Has it been so long since that area has had a hurricane
than no one remembers how devastating these storms can be? Those who think they can "ride it out" are out of their minds. Those who think they are safe because they are 20, 30, 50 miles inland are horribly misguided.

9. Betsy was 40 years ago and Camille was in 1969
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 01:13 AM by steve2470
Some of these folks survived both of those. This might be the exception. This is a stronger storm and there is less shoreline now because of erosion.

16. Here's the recent hurricane history of the New Orleans area....
<http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2002/of02-206/phy-environment/recent-hurricanes.html>

It looks like Betsy in 1965 did the most flooding in the recent past, and that was 40 years ago....approximately two generations.

30. Explains why so many aren't taking it seriously
the same happened here in Orlando; the last big hurricane to hit this area was 40 years ago, so we were unprepared. This is much, much more powerful, though. Let's hope that those who were planning on staying change their minds by morning!

level, and bordered by Lake Ponch and the Mississippi River. Their pumps are so old, I'm surprised they work at all. I spent a year there in 1994, and I was terrified every time there was a big rain; hoping that the pumps could keep up with the rainfall! I can't imagine a category 4 hurricane in that city. I was in Houston for several hurricanes, but Houston's not nearly as vulnerable as NO.

edited for spelling (Missippi River! Sounded like a hick!)

I've never been to NO, and if Katrina comes in as a category 4 or higher, I may never get the chance.VERY frightening. Let's pray for a miracle.

old buildings. It's the most European City that I know of in the States (reminds me most of Europe, along with San Fransico and some Eastern Cities). I sure hope you get the chance to visit. Let's pray for a miracle indeed.

31. thank goodness...
and thank you for all your updates; they are very helpful for those of us concerned. I lived in N.O. all my life, up until 4 years ago, when I moved to Houston to marry my husband. So, I am very worried about many I know who live there. 4 people are driving to Houston to stay with us very early Sunday morning. Still worried that they will have homes and businesses to come back to...

14. I'm agnostic and I'm praying for them
after going through three hurricanes last year, my stomach is in knots over this-and I'm no where near where it's going to land. I'm VERY upset that some DUers are choosing to "ride it out", or think that it's not worth trying to escape because the roads are clogged. Go at 5am-I did for Frances, and I didn't hit serious traffic for hours. This storm is a killer; nothing is worth staying in it's path.

32. Agreed! I've been through 7 in my lifetime...4 in St. Pete, FL....
...as a kid, 1 at sea when I was in the Navy, and 2 when we lived in Mobile, AL.

We didn't know that much about hurricanes when I was kid, and Dad voted to ride them out...luckily they went past us to the north and south.

The one at sea I will never forget. The day I got off that ship was the last day I ever went to sea...27 years ago.

We ran from both hurricanes in Mobile...we would NEVER stay.

I read his post earlier and simply couldn't believe it. What will happen if their home is leveled? Isn't travel less difficult than swimming against flood waters? If there are any DUers leaving in the am who can help him move them, I hope that they can contact him. I have a terrible feeling that if he stays he-and they-may not survive. I'm sorry to sound so grim but I feel strongly about this.

38. Thanks cat_girl25!
Well, my mom is staying in the Monteleone Hotel Downtown - a very safe place, but it was HARD getting her in. She was the LAST to get a room there!!! - because there is no alternative (her SO is in his 80s and too sick to leave). My bro left with his girl at 4 pm and just arrived in Memphis. I'm taking my dad to Memphis tomorrow (they reserved a room for us) after a good night's rest.

I lived through Betsy and all the rest, but I ain't foolin' around with this bad mo fo'! Even though my house is on higher ground (River Bend, Uptown), if a huge storm surge hits, I don't think the roof will be very comfortable... that is if we have a roof in 48 hours.

To all the lovely people here on DU, I cannot express fully my thanks by mere words... I'm gettin' verklimpt! :D

I am glad to hear you have a plan to get out. Is your mom with her SO at the Monteleone? Is that why she feels she can't leave (ie. his illness?) I am glad you will be leaving with your Dad, and I will be praying for your family to reach their destinations safely. Also that your mom and her SO would remain safe and sound.

Please read this thread we started (where you are specifically mentioned) to pray for those in the New Orleans, Louisiana, and Gulf Coast areas:

that it would reach 145mph winds within 12 hours, and now it's reached that in just 3 short hours or so?!?! What are the chances that this could actually happen???

You know what I think? Such a violation of calculated probability COULDN'T have happened ... without MASSIVE hurricane fraud! I smell Diebold in this! And don't give me any BS about "reluctant wind responders" or somesuch.

Does TIA know about this yet?

I can't even describe the depth of awful that I feel now.
Katrina is a monster and it is very possible she will carry the legacy of destroying an entire city with collateral damage of 100,000 people who didn't have the means to get out.
This is horrible.

46. I know
There isn't any help and noway for ordinary people like ourselves to get in.
Unless the people in NO do something about their own, those people are stuck.
As far as I am concerned, this is as big of a national emergency as 911--our government should be doing something MAJOR to get those people out of harm's way.
The monster Katrina can kill just like the monster Osama and the people end up just as dead.
WHERE IS OUR PRESIDENT????????????

It is also possible for a storm to lose as much intensity in as little time, lets hope for that.

There's nothing to draw intensity away from the storm. And the water is only going to get warmer during the day.
