2. How big is that lake you can see in Florida?

Because that's how big the eye of the storm is. That's how far accross I can see the ocean in the middle.

That is one very bad storm. :-(

here's from a weather blogger who seems to know:

"in rare circumstances some intense hurricanes will undergo an eye wall cycle and emerge with a hug doughnut eye. that eye is so wide and the eye wall so intense they will not have a collapse in the eye which is what happens when the eye shrinks to about 7-9 nm. she will itenmsify at a pretty consatant rate and be able to hold that intensity. sometimes this phase lasts 18hrs or more. isabel the last doughnut i saw had a 30-45nm wide eye for 5 days and fluctuated between 160-165moh winds that whole time. the thing is she could not get any stronger cause of the water temps. the water temps in the gulf loop will allow her to be as strong or stronger than isabel was at that time"

Lake Okeechochobee is about 50 miles wide, according to USGS.

Most hurricane eyes are 30-60 miles wide, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

So I guess this eye is about average size.

Still looks like a mean and nasty storm.

10. I have a screaming wireless connection.

It's loading slowly by my connection speed--maybe a whole minute, which is forever with my speed. As a former dial-up user, let me say two things:

1) I feel for ya.
2) It's not so cool you wouldn't get the same idea of how powerful the storm is by just looking at still images on weather.com.

My dial up just finished loading,it took forever to load and all I saw was a 10 second loop of a hurricane...Tonight its wall to wall tv
coverage of Katrina..Maybe I'll look into DSL...thanks again !!

it takes a while even on DSL but it's an interesting clip. It shows the spin and direction of the hurricane like on the weather channel. It looks very much like it is headed for New Orleans or very near there.
