My heart goes out to the folks in Mobile and New Orleans. I was on the campus of Murphy High School way back in the late '50s (maybe 1960, but I think '59) when a hurricane hit New Orleans with the tail proceeding toward Mobile. It was scary but nothing compared to the storm headed for New Orleans this time.

New Orleans must be one of the most vulnerable spots on earth for hurricanes and flooding. I recall visiting a cemetery there in which the graves were built above ground because not far beneath what appeared to be land was actually mostly water. Parts of NO seem to be really virtually drained swampland.

5. NO is about 20 feet below sea level, only the levees keep the water

out of downtown and many of those levees are old and in bad repair thanks to budget cuts for the last decade or two or three.
