I know that USUALLY I would never hitchhike, but damn, this is very scary. On edit: I'm in Florida, I'm just worried for NOLA.

3. It'd be hard to imagine available space in any vehicles.
What space wouldn't be filled by family would be filled by personal goods and irreplaceable items like family photographs and memorabilia

4. i'd bet the traffic is so heavy...
you could stand on the side of the road, wait for a truck to come by and just jump in the back.

If I was homeless in NO, I'd go that far to get out of dodge.

Prolly lots of trains itching to get the hell out of the area...

5. I would imagine that
people would be more sympathetic to hitchikers, considering the situation. And the police have more to worry about.

9. Mandatory evacuation
as I understand it, gives the government the right to comandeer vehicles to use in the evacuation. Rather than hitchhike, I'd go to a police station and find out where such vehicles are going to be stationed, so I could get out. Good luck to all in New Orleans!

11. The media was encouraging people to help one another in getting out.
They were speaking mostly about "your neighbors". But they were very concerned about people getting out, even if they have to camp out in their cars for a few days. They commented that there would be plenty of other Louisianians out there, and they will be helping one another out.

14. Why don't they turn the inbound lanes into OUTBOUND???
looking at it on tv, they keep showing traffic headed out of town on one side, bumper to bumper, and absolutely nobody headed into town on the two empty lanes- if it's a mandatory evac, then there should be no reason for people to be going in- so they should turn those lanes into outbound, and double the road capacity for the evacuation.

15. I would
Even though that is kind of dangerous especially since I am a little female. If I did not have transpotation and couldn't secure a spot on a train or bus, I'd risk the hitchiking route.
