PHOTO: Line to get into the NO Superdome
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 03:37 PM by Bluebear

Thousands of people who could not evacuate New Orleans wait outside the Louisiana Superdome to be let in for shelter from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans August 28, 2005. Authorities in New Orleans ordered hundreds of thousands of residents to flee on Sunday as Hurricane Katrina strengthened into a rare top-ranked storm and barreled towards the vulnerable U.S. Gulf Coast city. REUTERS/Rick Wilking

===

Current dewpoint is an ungodly 74, temp 89, heat index is 99... no A/C in the dome, these poor people.

===

on edit: They are searching everyone to make sure they don't have dope or a suitcase nuke. USA 2005.

9. Are they really searching for DOPE?
I understand weapons, since these people will be in close proximity for a long period of time under horrific circumstances... but DOPE? They need to get these people in there and settled. It's ridiculous that they would take the time to search for anything but metal, and that only because they should be setup to do that expediently.

28. Yep... Searching For Weapons And Contraband... Holding Up The Lines...
And the Homeland Security Colonel who was just on the local (NOLA) newscast, predicted that the floor level (field level) may go underwater. And they won't be responsible for feeding anybody. And with no electricity, no air conditioning.

Said that his only responsibility, is to make sure they wake up alive on Tuesday. Apparently, in a dark, dank, water-filled stadium.

Now given that scenario, wouldn't YOU want some drugs??? And maybe even a weapon to just end it all???

They've had 40 FUCKING YEARS to prepare for this!!! And this is the best they can do???

The once great and powerful America, indeed...

:wtf:

45. Searching for the American Sports Terrorist Cell
Apparently this is a new tactic for Homeland Security. Yesterday, they began searching all persons entering Cowboy Stadium (and presumably all stadiums and sports complexes) and the local news had a big story on it. The "searches" are about as useless as tits on a bull. The "security" merely runs their hand around your waist line. That's it. I guess this means that the ONLY place to put a nuke is in your waistband.

About as stupid as siezing cigarette lighters at the airport.

I was trying to say that people if they wanna ride can get one.
Hell a nekkid stranger can get a ride in NOLA on a rainy night from a stranger.

They wouldn't try to understand. I was like I know my people in NOLA. It is a family type o town. Anyone can be fed and get a drink. But, why some won't leave escapes me.

There will be piles of people in houses families, strangers, partying tonite until things get serious. I'm so scared for my folks down there.

43. Line blocks long at Superdome for shelter of last resort
NEW ORLEANS They hobbled in on crutches and canes. They were wheeled in on stretchers. If they were physically fit, they lined up outside the Superdome, clutching their belongings.
With Hurricane Katrina bearing down, New Orleans' poor and infirm sought the only shelter available.

By the time the Superdome opened, the line stretched for blocks outside the main entrance.

Everyone entering was patted down, went through a metal detector and watched National Guard members search their bags. It was a thorough search -- people had to put hands on head and even clothing seams were checked.

<snip>

He says the dome was staffed by local doctors and 25 more were flying in from Washington. Dr. Sandra Robinson was meeting with small groups of the evacuees, warning them they needed enough medicine for several days.

Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 05:26 PM by slutticus
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/wwl092304thanh.1295648.html

<snip>It appears a facility as large as the Dome could hold up in hurricane conditions but Bill Curl, spokesman for the Superdome, says that is yet to be tested and if there is no other choice then maybe the Dome could serve as a shelter.

“Only in dire emergencies. The Superdome is not a shelter,” said Curl.

According to Curl, the assumption that the Superdome can withstand hurricane force winds is just that: an assumption. He says more analysis is needed to determine what the Dome can actually withstand because previous wind studies have become somewhat irrelevant since they did not factor in the new high-rise buildings around the Dome.

“They create a wind tunnel effect and that needs to be tested. There were initial studies that indicated 130 miles per hour, but we don’t know,” said Curl. He adds that the Dome is not impervious to the same elements other areas would be exposed to.
