Uh..are BOTH directions of highways open for evacuation? |
|
all the news videos show 6 of 12 lanes VACANT instead of open for out going traffic. Have they reversed any of the highways? Some mayor just said their biggest fear now is people caught in their cars in the 3 mph traffic

There's a complicated system for getting people out and avoiding bottlenecks -- a lot of highways are now one-direction only... but not all of them.

2. How can this city be so unprepared? You are right! |
|
In all the pictures, four lanes of highway are vacant! This is really going to be an even worse disaster due to the lack of preparedness for this type of emergency!

8. There is NO way to prepare for a storm like this in New Orleans. |
|
I lived there for six years. The city is surrounded by water, and lower than sea level. It is just too big to evacuate in the time frame that a hurricane gives. There only between 24 to 30 total lanes that lead out of New Orleans, and some of them go to places that aren't any help to go to.
ALL useful escape routes go over major bridges that are miles long.

3. Looks like the causeway is all one direction |
|
I know what you mean though. CNN keeps showing one highway scene where the cars are in only one lane! What's up with that?

7. Yeah, I keep seeing this and want to cry. |

MSNBC is showing a different highway scene, and it doesn't look any different than the one on CNN.

4. I know! Isn't that the stupidest? |
|
Some folks will eventually get fed up (or really scared) and take over the other part of the highway.

9. at 7AM this morning they were showing pictures of that road |
|
which I assume is I-10 and it looked like one lane was jammed and about 9 lanes empty. Half hour ago, the live shots are the same. It must be emptying into a one lane turnoff or something. Whatever, there's gonna be dead people in cars all over those roads soon if they run out of gas. WHat a fucking horror story.
