as a favor to those on dialup, could someone PLEASE post |
|
some running commentary on the streaming video from New Orleans? I am SO frustrated--I have been trying ALL DAY to get SOMEthing to work and even downloaded the latest Windows Media Player, defragmented my disk to make more space, cleared out unnecessary files, etc. The two live feeds that have been linked here on DU offer no options for dialup and just do not work--I get a fraction of a second of picture and sound, then a long nothing, then another fraction of a second, then it goes all black. I can't even get the cam from some bridge to work. What is going on there now, anyway? (btw, I have Windows XP with Mozilla Firefox and I don't have a TV).

7. good idea...here's some current info |
|
I'm watching the live stream from WDSU.
The rain has started. There are loooooong lines of people wating outside of the super dome. The holdup is due to body searches. They can't bring their pets. The crowd began changing "let us in let us in!" The majority of people in the crowd are African American. Authorities have told the newscasters that everyone will be allowed into the dome so it doesn't seem like they have any plans to close the doors but there will be a curfew - from sun down to sun rise.
The temp is currently 85 degrees. Winds are moving east at 12 mph. Humidity is at 65%. The traffic cams have started to shake and the sky looks considerably darker than it did an hour ago.

27. I keep hearing different times predicted. |
|
some say 8am, others say 6am. I guess there's no way to predict the exact time of landfall.
The curfew time seemed ridiculous to me too.

They just had a brief look at the situation at the Dome. Long lines, and the Homeland Security guy for the area explaining that they will search all bags of people coming in for security reasons and that the Dome can't hold as many people as it would for a game (he expects the lower level to flood).
Interviews with area residents outside the Dome. Many are more concerned about their homes than their personal safety.
Tornado watches in effect in the area. Katrina may weaken somewhat, but not enough to matter. The storm still looks likely to hit NO directly.

but honestly it looks like 60 percent of those are stuck standing outside the dome waiting to get in.
Still cat5 winds up to 165 miles. Some places are expected to get 15 to 20 inches of rain
Oh and to make it worse they have a tornado warning in effect!

18. Screening process slow - |
|
some very interesting 'finds' Mayor going to bunker down at City Hall expect lots of damage at least 30 police type boats standing by 1500 Nat Guard troops standing by
feels surreal - amazed by how well things have gone 75-80% evacuated out of city. hardest part of nightmare after the storm passes.
message for those who have to stay - hoping churches, neighbors buddy up once in a lifetime storm Russian roulette to stay in most houses.

outside of levee protected areas nothing to stop the water. will start to come onshore overnight.
could weaken if going through eye regeneration - but it will hit right around high tide tomorrow morning
will go right over levee and come into city.

odds it will weaken - ability to track is good - strength can fool us. could be a surprise - a sliver of hope
power of good thoughts and lots of prayers.
going through list of 'do not bring' stuff to Dome again.

22. I've been monitoring WWLTV off and on |
|
Earlier most of the reports focused on forecast and traffic advice. They seemed, truly, to be trying to steer drivers out of the area as efficiently as possible.
As the day wears on, there are increasing reports of what people should do who are trying to ride it out--water, food, hide from wind, try to get above the water, yada yada yada. Very grim really, knowing that stores are closing and water and wind are coming that many simply cannot adequately prepare or escape.
The worst part, really, are the commercials...the mundane normalcy of them juxtaposed with the news is quite surreal.
Hope that helps.

24. the begining of the "bad weather" is predicted to begin this evening |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 05:31 PM by GloriaSmith
the weather guy was discussing how the strong winds will begin way before the storm hits. Lesser hurricanes can take 12 hours to pass so NO is going to take a long, hard beating.
Ray Nagin anticipates possible losses in the billions of dollars range. He's telling people who are seeking shelter not to bring any weapons, large items, make sure perscriptions are fully labeled so they won't be confiscated.
Now a newscaster is talking to a National Guard outside the super dome. Discussing the search process. Nothing new though.
on edit: newscaster said people are starting to LEAVE the superdome because they didn't know food wasn't going to be provided. People are going back home to get food. Hopefully they'll come back soon because the wind is going to start getting pretty vicious.

|

at the superdome. authorities are wrapping the long line of people around the perimeter of the superdome now because the outside of the building protects the people from the rain. Temp is down to 79 and humidity is at 90%. winds are moving east at 8mph. The eye is 140 miles southeast of NO right now.
It is possible that isolated tornadoes could form from the outer winds of Katrina. There are various tornado watches in LA.
190 MPH WINDS NOW! RECORD.
