Information about the Superdome
"The Louisiana Superdome has withstood the test of time; it has a surprisingly undated look to it, even as fixed domed stadium construction began to fade in the early 1990s and others having even been closed. The Superdome is built to withstand catastrophes; the roof is built to stand up to 200 MPH wind and even deep flood water wouldn't reach the second level 35 feet from the ground. It has thus been used as an emergency shelter but is not designed for the task; in 1998 during Hurricane Georges problems included looting and supplying 14,000 people with necessities."

This building will be the Sanctuary for 1000's of people, let's all hope that it stays up.

1. What scares the shit out of me is the question about what effect...
...the winds blowing around the surrounding buildings will have on the roof. Here's an aerial photo of the Superdome and the surrounding buildings, which ring the northeast side of the SD (the likeliest direction of the heaviest winds coming from Katrina):

Most of the buildings are much taller the the SD:

Is the turbulence from the buildings something they've factored into the design of the roof? And I doubt the roof could sustain a direct hit from a tornado.

I wouldn't want to be there right now. :(

3. And many of the roads out are just big parking lots now
?

How will these folks survive?

I'm afraid the losses are going to be massive.

Also, re the dome, the threshold/survivability study results were not in yet so nobody really knows how it will hold up AND

Even if it does - Will there be enough room on the upper levels for everyone when it floods? Will those levels hold or will they collapse under the increased strain of too many people and the inevitable deformation of the building from the MASSIVE amounts of water?

If they do survive the storm how will we get them out? They have no food or water in there.

No, I don't think the superdome is a good idea.
