In the wake of a disaster of this magnitude-and I pray that it's a near miss...there will be a lot of requests for charitable donations.
Watch out for charities that you've never heard of and have no history. As for local LA and AL charities, legitimate ones should have not only a listing online but in the phone book. Seek them out, don't fall for telephone or mail solitications.
In fact, give to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, and other groups with a proven track record of sensible money management. There will also doubtless be a telethon to raise money for the many who will need everything-food, water, shelter. Fill their pockets, not some scamsters.
