40. I am going to tirelessly repeat this statistic. It's come to feel like my
mission in life. But I feel it's so important. 58% of the American people opposed the Iraq war BEFORE the invasion. Feb. '03. Before all the lies were exposed; before the full horror and costs of it were known. Across the board in all polls. Way back then. 58%!

About half of that 58% were against the war outright. The other half would only support a U.N. peacekeeping mission--not preemptive, unilateral war by Bush.

THAT many people--nearly 60%--didn't trust Bush THEN. It's over 70% today.

That figure--58%--dipped only once, during the few weeks of the invasion, with U.S. troops at maximum risk--then went right back up to nearly 60%, where it stayed through the election.

And we have to ask, WHY did we have war anyway, when it was clearly NOT the will of the majority of Americans? And, what really happened in the election?

All OTHER issue polls are quite similar. Whether it's the Iraq war, or torture policy, or Social Security, or the deficit, or women's rights--the great majority of Americans oppose every major Bush policy, foreign and domestic, way up in the 60% to 70% range.

What is going on here? Well, it's quite clear to me, given what I know of the overwhelming evidence of election fraud in 2004, that the American people, a) are actually progressive in their views, and very anti-Bush, and b) have been disempowered and DISENFRANCHISED.

I think it's very important for activists here at DU, and other peace and political activists, to know this--that the great majority of Americans are WITH us. And one other important thing: we must look to the MECHANISM of power for the solution, and not just to how to "frame" issues, or how to "reach" the crazy, rightwing MINORITY. So many comments I read here are aimed at that minority--either ridiculing it, or trying to tone down other people's comments and "issue frames" in order to CONVINCE that MINORITY.

I do think that it's important that any reachable rightwingers be reached--because, you know, they are Americans, too, and they are human beings. The Bush junta hurts them--or will hurt them--too, even if they don't know it. But far more important, right now, is how to EMPOWER and ENFRANCHISE the MAJORITY.

And I think that is very simple, and doable--maybe not easy, but quite straightforward and doable. We need...

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% audit (automatic recount), strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

-------

Did you know that Venezuela has OPEN SOURCE CODE? Yup. But not us. We have two far rightwing corporations--Diebold and ES&S--tabulating our votes with SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code. It is insane!

The reason we have this is bipartisan corruption of state/local election officials, who have been lured by lavish lobbying and by the heady power of brokering these big business deals in the billion dollar election theft industry.

So, we have obstacles to overcome (corrupt Dems, too), and a lot of work to do--but the power over election systems still resides at the state/local level, where ordinary people still have some influence. And, as long as we have that power, we MUST act to use it! We must not slack! We must take that opportunity! Our democracy depends upon it.

It's NOT GOOD for this rightwing minority to be running the country, and to have their views trumpeted throughout the corporate news monopolies, with a near blackout of majority views. It makes the wingers ugly and crazy. It makes them not have to think very hard. It makes them not consult their own B.S.-detectors. They know, deep in their hearts, that something's wrong. Some of them do, anyway. They've gone off the deep end. That sign, "Kick their ass, take their gas" says it all. They're totally whacked out. They can't even think any more. And their hearts are in the wrong place.

Nor is it good to have either Democrats or Republicans dependent upon the corrupt election officials and rightwing corporations for how the votes are counted. We are just going to get a War Democrat for president as the result--someone who may PROMISE to "bring the troops home" sometime or other, but who will not likely abandon those 15 new U.S. military bases in Iraq, and who will soon change (break) that promise with the new goal of "doing a better war." What we need is a truly populist Democrat (or other?) who will immediately call for a U.N. protectorate in Iraq and involve Iraq's neighbors in a peace process, who will look long and hard at military spending and at the corporate news monopolies, and will provide the country with a positive vision aimed at peace and justice, and at the full restoration of democracy in the U.S.

But that can only happen when we restore our election system to the public venue, and have recovered our right to vote. It's going to take time. Perhaps a War Democrat, who will likely have to pay lip service to some progressive values, will provide the political room to make progress on this vital matter: election reform. Whatever happens, that is the first and most essential thing we have to do: restore our right to vote.

I think * was cheating down there in Texas, that's how he won there too.

I agree, we need to restore our voting system, FIRST or we are doomed.

Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 09:43 AM by ItsTheMediaStupid
I'm a professional programmer/analyst with over 20 years experience.

Making this code proprietary is ridiculous, because there is nothing special about it.

The code to count votes could be written by a college freshman in a basic programming course.

The code for the touch screen portion could be written by any competent programmer who's been working in VB or any other GUI technology for a year or two.

I believe that in the original picture his shirt said:
"I HATE HIPPIES!"
but the one I saw could have also been 'shopped.

75. that's what I was wondering. Why does the horse have GOD written
on it? Seems strange. Idiots...that's what they all look like. Notice the 19 yr old agreeing with the fact that our military is stretched and needs help...then having the gall to say he is better suited in America. Chickenhawk cowards...and the move it on buddy redneck...I've spent to much energy on these low lifes already.

52. Ha ha, chicken-hawks on parade
So tough and mighty, yet when they find out their posturing is going to be broadcast they get belligerent and tell the cameras to "move it on". That 19 year old wimp was priceless..."I'll go if I'm forced to--not before, yet I'll stand here yelping about how fabulous I think the war is". :eyes:

57. Corporate media lying again, as usual we can see.....
Said thousands of Pro War supporters came out. Looks more like a group of about 130 stick fighters to me. These people are a true disgrace called free republicans.

What in the hell came over them to put on this rally?!?? Its downright STUPID looking!!!!

And the Camp Casey events have around 3000 attendees at any time lately and are fully unified, protesting, and asking the hard questions reporters should have.

60. How creepy is that?
When he said Truthout was an "Internet news organization" and one of the chickenhawks said "oh, you're the enemy."

Sometimes it's breathtaking how sucessful the RW noise machine has been in separating people from the institution of the press.

Sooooo ca-yute. Yeah, I'll just bet she has "friends" over in Iraq. Friends whose names she can't quite recall, if she had been asked. She's perfectly happy to carry a sign and gas up her car with fuel that someone else is fighting to secure for her, but I would have loved to see her reaction if it had been suggested that SHE sign up.

89. That last guy reminds me of a KKK rally I protested in Georgia once
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 04:39 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
I was on the anti-kkk side of the street with the GBI people. They had cameras set up and were filming the people attending the rally. I had my camera with me and when one of the KKK members came across the street to hand out their propaganda I took his picture. By law they have to expose their faces when they are on public property so his face flap was up. The pic shows how freaked he was when I took his pic and then he got in my face for taking his photo telling me he wanted my film. Luckily the GBI reminded him that if he was ashamed of what he was doing he should rethink his positions.

Asshole cowards one and all.
