The Superdome homeland security guy
Terry Ebert (he looks pretty thrashed right now) was just bemoaning the loss of wetlands as contributing to the severity of the storm surge. Amazing.

1. What are you watching? The Governor mentioned the loss of the
wetlands in passing when she was on CNN's a little while ago.

4. And in another post he's being assaulted for saying he'd...
buy oil futures...

I was happy to hear him say that the NG used buses to go around and pick up people. I was very concerned that the poor people were 'on their own' to get to the Superdome, esp. as localized flooding continues...

He made a comment about the oil futures market, how he'd buy if he could... Some people decided that was very crass, but I thought it spoke to how much he believes this is seriously going to f'up oil prices in the next week...

7. I hate to say it, but despite some crass remarks about oil futures,
I like Colonel Terry Ebber, the Homeland Security guy down in NO. He's sharp, he knows his stuff, and he's done a lot with a bad situation. He's just the kind of person for a job like this.

Not to praise Homeland Security per se, but at least there are some good apples in the barrel. I hope we have lots more like him.

His remarks at the end were in poor taste. But up till then, I found him impressive.

8. I thought it sounded more like he was using 'gallows humor'...
and he was just trying to impress upon people how bad it was, but at the same time convey that he's planning on making it, and helping other people to make it too...

6. Wetlands serve as natural floodwater sponges. Their loss IS a problem...
...but they can only take so much. New Orleans is very screwed. :(
