I would have been parked outside a senior apt building with my minivan until it couldn't hold anymore... failing that, I would have packed it full of nieghbor's pets.

That weather statement is the absolute most chilling one i"ve seen, yet. My thoughts are with everyone in that area.

27. Sounds about right, they expect it to take Months to Pump out the water
from N.O. alone, and most of that will be a mixture of RAW Sewage, Sea Water and which will be contaminated with dead rotting corpses (only animals hopefully).

The Hurricane force winds of this are about 210 MILES across, compared to approx 60 Miles across for last years Charley.

Here's the current "wind field " graphic:

89. Yeah, they mean REFRIGERATORS.
A sustained 160-mph wind is enough to tumble a small CAR
along the ground, so flying stoves and dishwashers are certainly
a possibility.

The warnings from NWS are frickin GRIM.

The 50% of houses that might withstand the wind
are going to be smashed buy the debris from
the half that didn't...

I am very afraid for the people there.

Edited because I stupidly called the Superdome the Astrodome. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa

A few random thoughts.

First of all, with all due respect, praying won't matter. The invisible sky god won't give a flying fuck if you worship or not. What matter is cold, hard fact.

This is a dangerous hurricane. Shit happens. Hurricanes happens. It was inevitable that some day New Orleans would be directly in the path of a deadly destructive hurricane. The population of this country, especially in the coastal areas, has grown at a rapid rate over the last fifty years. I've been reading since at least the mid-1970's that deadly hurricanes somewhere are going to happen, and that the problem with the influx of new residents along the coasts is that most of them have no experience with serious hurricanes. At least there has been a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans, and an honest effort is being made to shelter those who cannot leave.

Anyone else noticing that the predominant skin color of those going to the Superdome says a lot about this country?

There's also a pornography of disaster going on here. Those of us safely away from it can watch, safe in our living rooms, glad we're not there, and secretly enjoying the destruction.

Maybe that's you, but it's sure not me and I know it's not a lot of people around here.

By the way, it's the Superdome. Not the Astrodome.

61. Oops. Didn't mean to name it incorrectly.
Yeah, it is a pornography of disaster. I'll stand by that statement. All of the frantic, hysteric posts I've been reading here the last day or so, the warnings to leave, as if people in New Orleans haven't already been told to go, the constant coverage on various networks. My spousal unit expressed amazement about an hour ago that all channels hadn't gone to "All Hurricane Katrina". And he sarcastically said, "What about missing white women in Aruba."

65. So because people are getting worked up over it...
that leads you to believe they're secretly enjoying it? Personally I think that's absolutely wrong. I've been here all day and I haven't seen anything like that. But to each their own.

83. The homes of close to two million people
could well be demolished along with the infrastructure for one of America's most important ports and that part of the Gulf is the IV line into which our nation mainlines oil. It's about to get its clock cleaned.

Usually we can bitch about nedia coverage with some line like "isn't there something more important to cover?"

Not tonight there isn't.

If this is as bad as it looks, it will affect ALL of us--likely for years to come.

I think Blue Oyster Cult said it

59. I highly doubt anyone is enjoying this
I'm just hoping that when the sun goes down tomorrow, that the Big Easy will have been spared the worst possible scenario. But there is nothing in the science that says they will. I am wondering what I will be able to do after it is over, and hoping that everyone else is doing the same.
I truly fear for those people in the Superdome.
Truly.

64. Prayer has nothing to do with "the invisible sky god"
and everything to do with trying to tap into the global mind to send health & comfort to the people in NOLA (and try to calm our mother earth).

See the Princeton Global Consciousness Project...

It's not prayer, its just "trying to tap into the global mind."

Just what I wanted right now. Your ridicule of mine and other's belief systems will distract me nicely from the fact that an awful lot of my family lives 60 miles north of New Orleans. Please, post on, O Nattering Nabob of Negativity.

But first, read the link I posted from the Global Consciousness Project and tell me they're not on to something interesting.

72. So are you trying to say that
prayers will really help? Diver the hurricane? Help people survive who otherwise might not? Bring electricity back sooner?

Instead of prayers, how about the kind of government commitment to doing something real to help all those whose homes will be wiped out, who won't have running water for weeks?

I get so frustrated at the "prayer" crap that I want to shake everyone who piously says, "I'm praying for you." How about something that will really accomplish something.

Think about it. What if a poster said, "I'm throwing dice for you." Or, "I'm reading the Rune Stones."

Prayer, while it may make the one who prays feel better, DOES NOTHING AT ALL TO CHANGE ANYTHING.

And now I suppose I'll go back to lurk mode because I know this will get me flamed.

Pray all you want. The path of the hurricane, the degree of destructiveness, will not be altered one iota.

77. When there is nothing else t be done, prayer certainly can provide
a great deal of comfort to some people. While I am not generally one of them, I feel compelled to ask you politely to not get nasty with those who DO find comfort in prayer. Now is not the time or place to belittle believers.

Save it for LATER.

78. Let's see, at this moment right now I, personally, can:
1. make a donation to the Red Cross.

2. pray.

and that's pretty much it. That's all I can do. So I plan to do both. Ain't nothing wrong with taking concrete action AND praying.

I never understand why people here on DU feel the need to "educate" others about how prayer is so baaaaaaaaad, about how it doesn't work. Why do you care so much? You know how it comes off? "Everyone! Serve the God of Rational Thought! NOW! I demand it!" Why do you need to scold people into your way of thinking?

And if a poster wants to throw dice or read the rune stones for me, wonderful. It's all good.

98. When I was in my mid 30's my father was in a serious accident
I left the hospital after seeing him and not recognizing a single part of his body as his own. I was home, frustrated and felt helpless..I went outside and started weeding my garden...just picking weeds so that my father would live. Was it really useless? I don't know, but when people feel helpless to actually do anything, they will resort to that which they can do in the moment.

Sometimes it's praying...sometimes it's pissing in a punchbowl and lecturing them that they all should have moved.

70. NO Wiped Out?
I just saw this post at wunderground.com on Jeff Master's Blog

Will New Orleans be the first major U.S City to be wiped out? If the levees are breached great damage will ensue that will destroy most of the city. The rest of the city would soon leave as the heart of the city would be gone. The economic damage to the country would be great. This is truly the most grave situation for the U.S since, well ever.

How could an entire city be rebuilt? And even if it could, should a city like New Orleans be rebuilt? I've been reading articles that say this has been a disaster waiting to happend because this is a terrible place for a city.

If the levees are breached, won't the Mississippi River permanently flood the city?

76. I've been pondering that for the last couple of days
I hope I'm way off base--but I am scared shitless. Without using nukes I don't know if the US Air Force could do what Katrina is gonna do to New Orleans. Even if there was not a single additional casualty how many bazillion dollars will it take to rebuild a city which will likely be just as vulnerable to this sort of disaster?

We're taking a look at a whole new level of natural disaster.

Good Luck Gulf Coast.
