WWL-TV is closing down in New Orleans
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 10:53 PM by steve2470
They will now be broadcasting from Baton Rouge. Got too risky in NOLA. They are still streaming video. http://www.wwltv.com and go to the "Live Coverage" link.

1. Good for them. I can't believe how many reporters and media folks
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 10:52 PM by Radio_Lady
are still there. This hurricane means business and they should all be folding up their satellite stuff and other technology and getting the hell out of there!

This goes for Ed Lavandera and Shepard Smith and others I've seen tonight. They are taking HUGE risks in my humble opinion. Doesn't MANDATORY EVACUATION mean the media people too???

3. No, the mayor exempted certain people from his evacuation order
Including the media, emergency workers, hotel workers and hotel guests.

If I were a cop, a firefighter, a doctor or a reporter, I would expect to have to stay, and know it was part of the job. But if I was working for Holiday Inn, NOLA? I'd be out of there in a split second.

2. I just posted the same thing.
The weirdest part was the still-miked anchorman musing, "This is the first time I ever remember this happening."

4. The WWL facilities are right in the Quarter
Having worked there, there is an underground bunker that is fairly storm-proof.

An old weather guy named Nash Roberts achieved becoming a local New Orleans hero by riding out Betsy and Camille while holing up there and reporting the path of the hurricane well before the technology meteorologists have now.

I bet Mike Hoss is going to stay back and come up for air from there tomorrow afternoon. Him and that crazy bastard Garland Robinette!

11. I'm disappointed they didnt' try to stay, in a way
Yeah, I remember Nash Roberts well. And I spent Betsy in my greataunt's apartment on Royal (now the Hove' Parfumier). I thihk the phalanxes of storm-tested msasonry buildings standing one agains the other would be about the safeest place to be.

And I presume they're leaving lots of reports and producers behind.

They don't make talent like they used to, now, do they?

12. Wow, that's way cool!
Yep, I was hoping they'd hang out in the Quarter and let the Red Stickers wimp out. Maybe if it was Angela Hill and Garland Robinette...they would have stayed.

When I worked at WWL during Florence, we stayed. Granted, it was a Cat3 that eventually hit the Gulf Coast...but we stayed.

5. WWL am radio is still on at 875 KHz
Edited on Sun Aug-28-05 11:04 PM by Elwood P Dowd
They were just saying that the storm might hit slightly east of NO, which would be great news for that city but bad for places like Slidell and the Mississippi/Alabama coasts.
