The poor who were stuck in the city? They might give their funds versus their prayers.

37. God isn't your fairy godfather
Too many times people think God is like a fairy godfather which isn't the case. Plus, in Genesis God promised to never flood the earth again like the flood. God is like your earth father. You can ask him for things and to help and to tell your concerns etc. but you don't always get your way.

...it shows some level of "sophistication" to snicker/feign outrage about such a expression of support from one anchor at Faux toward whoever he/she was talking to at that particular second.

Not our best moment, as threads go. But the freeps would be proud...

Many people pray and it's meant in a good way. I'd rather have prayers for me than nothing. Just saying "we're praying for you" doesn't make it the 700 club.

33. How about
. . . not piling unwarranted antagonism onto an already awful situation.

People pray. Even Fox news anchors, I imagine. In a situation this bad, there is little cause to question the sincerity of the anchor's sentiment. It's one shared by plenty of people, even those who aren't particularly religious.

48. Well, you first asked me my plans...
and I graciously told you how I was going to spend my day. It seems a bit churlish of you to respond with such a fucking obscenity laden reply when I asked the same of you. I hope that you are bit more compassionate to others when they comply with a request for information, but it doesn't seem likely, given the example here. However, I must say that I am flattered, although a little concerned, that you care enough to trouble yourself with my "record here" Because I don't.

I honestly hope that your relatives remain safe.

17. In my mind it depends on the source.
Having a person or institution I believe to be benevolent and honest saying they're going to actively pray for someone or somewhere is fine. But having a bunch of lying pigs like Fox say it just reeks of insincerity and opportunism. It's just an absolute turn off to me, and that's why I said what I did in my post above.

15. Sorry, but there are bigger problems in the world right now
than your exquisitely tender sensibilities. It's very likely that thousands are going to die tonight and a million or more will be left homeless. Then there's the matter of the largest port in the U.S. being destroyed, an oil shock, etc.

In light of that, your offense at some teevee talking head's religious sentiments pales into nonexistence.

Besides, a thread nearly identical to this one, down to the very phrasing you used, was locked earlier tonight.

Canada doesn't have an 'Arlington'

You do. And the symbol for an atheist buried there is quite distinctive.

How come a Canadian has to tell you this??

http://www.arlingtoncemetery.org/funeral_information/authorized_emblems.html

And actually if you checked out atheism online you'd know how many atheist Americans died 'defending the US.'

There are well over a billion atheists in the world...more atheists than RC or Muslims in fact.

Atheists are just more honest about it, and don't pretend to kill 'in Jesus' name'

..."my" traditions? Call up quartermaster Montgomery Meigs if you want to discuss "tradition": your "link," as a "link," is pretty much superfluous & silly.

Let's talk facts, as we find them on the ground, so to speak, at Arlington: post me a link, or a pic right into this thread, of a tombstone at Arlington National Cemetery adorned with the "atheist" symbol on a headstone. Just one will suffice, mind you...

In the meantime, do quit trying to change the subject.

But beyond that, I wonder how many devout believers in "God" get through the carnage and horror of war and come out wondering just how "He" can allow such suffering.

108. BULLSHIT i was one !!
you might want to check this site out before you start babbling about stuff you KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!! damn that PISSES ME OFF

You’ve heard the unfair claim there are no Atheists in foxholes!

But we know that isn’t true … Hundreds of thousands, even millions of Atheists and other nonbelievers have served in our country’s military to protect our freedom and defend the principles of our Constitution. Isn’t it time that our leaders, media and policy-makers recognized the contributions of these Atheists in Foxholes?

110. Sometimes I wonder
If I came out of a firefight with the notion that my lucky Fruit of the Looms saved me, that if I ever took them off, I'd be struck by lightning, hit by a bus, felled by a heart attack... would the "no atheists in foxholes" types think I was nuts? Or would they regard my irrationality with approval? I have, after all, a newfound appreciation of and deference to a Higher Power.

76. true
but some people say "prayer" instead of saying ....."I'm sending positive energy." Personally I do not pray, because I agree with the message in your post, but if I'm talking to someone who will better associate the concept with the word Prayer, I might say pray. Anyhow, we can not really know what the Fox guy meant, it may have been one of those "hi,how are you?" kind of remarks, but there are a lot of people who ARE genuine in their sentiments and are praying, or meditating or chanting or singing, or visualizing.....whatever IT is.....they are collectively trying to send positive energy. I see nothing wrong in doing that. Besides, if nothing else it diverts attention away from negative thought which is always good on a personal level....if not more.

45. Whats wrong with praying?
Why is praying for someone considered backwards and stupid while there is a 150 reply thread on the same page discussing mass conscience for New Orleans, which seems to be "think happy thoughts for them"?

But some people are uncomfortable with "theistic" language.

82. sort of
I don't know.....when I visualize to create a positive experience I try to see the outcome as if it's already happened...for instance I see the storm as being calmed, I see a reporter giving hopeful news, I see happy people because their homes weren't lost afterall etc.....I think often times when religious people pray, they are asking God to help make things better and they bargain, as if the higher power doesnt already know. So, I don't know if its the same thing, because Im not sure that the person "praying" is in the same frame of mind. But regardless I do believe that both prayer and "sending positive energy" can be good for the individual. And we're all here to learn anyhow, so what I think could be a lot of hokeyness.....who knows really. We should all do what we can, in the way that feels best to us.

Peace

Just what I was thinking. But if prayer makes people feel better, go for it. I believe in a higher power and have said a prayer. But mainly, I did it to make myself feel better. At least I can be honest about my intentions.

68. Well I know people hate to feel helpless
and if praying makes them feel better, I have no problem with it.

It certainly won't do any harm.

I just get annoyed when they try to fob it off on everyone, as the only right way to think.

That way lies the thought police, and stakes and matches.

"I just get annoyed when they try to fob it off on everyone, as the only right way to think."

And I've seen that attitude in a few threads tonight, which makes me angry. The skeptics were getting a beating in the "mass conscious" thread.

I hate to say this, but national tragedy brings out national hatred toward the non-theists. And it's sad, because we should all work together to help the victims.... And after this hurricane hits, the people of NO and the surrounding areas are going to need a lot of tangible support.

I don't think the drop has anything to do with prayer. I believe in a higher power and have said a prayer. However, I think the drop has more to do with conditions in the Gulf. But, like MANY people have said here tonight, prayer does not hurt.

69. What's The Difference
Between "Hoping" and "Praying" anyway? I think many use the words interchangeably. Like, even though I'm not a Christian I still say "Jesus Christ!" or "Thank God!" - I don't feel the need to kick myself for doing this.

That said, yes the idea of a Fox news anchor 'preying' for anything is utterly ridiculous. But, this if TV! These people are plastic phonies from the beginning and will say ANYTHING.

I just wonder who the Fox Reporters are really praying for, and if indeed praying for themselves over their transgressions I wonder why they criticize the citizens of New Orleans.....

New Orleans knows whats up. There is alot of bad apples out there but, there's enough informed people to also know this storm is a severe thrashing and one of many coming to their quiet world because of the sins of those on Fox.
