Dan Brown: Seville smells and is corrupt. City: You come here and say that
By Elizabeth Nash in Madrid
Published: 28 August 2005

The curse of Dan Brown has darkened the Spanish city of Seville, whose reputation receives a drubbing in the author's first code-breaking thriller, Digital Fortress. The novel, published in 1996, will shortly appear in a Spanish translation following the successes of Spanish editions of The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons.

Seville, proud of its beauty, has been so stung by Brown's contemptuous remarks in Digital Fortress, which is partly set in Spain, that the town hall this week invited the writer to visit the city to "renew his knowledge and revise his opinion".

The American author accuses the Andalusian capital of having hospitals that stink of urine, hopelessly inefficient phones and corrupt policemen. Most wounding of all, Brown attacks Seville's best-loved monument, the international symbol of its Moorish heritage: the 12th-century Giralda tower.

The Giralda, Brown sneers, "has stairs so steep that tourists have died here. This is not America, there are no warning signs, nor banisters, no advice about insurance policies. This is Spain. If you are stupid enough to fall, it's your own fault, independently of who built the steps."

All the more Sevilla for me.

2. What is his problem? I was born in Sevilla, have a sister who...
lives in Ecija, a city outside of Sevilla.

I spend a lot more time there than Dan Brown.

So, he's trying to draw attention to his book. Good job!!!

I have never heard anyone else make such remarks.

With 700,000 people, some of the phones are not going to work, and some of the police are on the take.

Sevilla es la ciudad mas bonita en Espana!

How is it in Cleveland?

3. Sevilla is both gorgeous and very fun.

The Museo de la Bellas Artes with Zurburan, Murillo, Goya, Ribera. Gorgeous Cathedral district (I once heard the most incredible electric jazz trio at a backdoor club there at 3 a.m., after a Thursday night of working class Flamenco performances), great diverse nightlife, beautiful spring and autumns, mild winters. Wine, sherry, gorgeous people. Fast trains to everywhere else.

Further down in "The Independent" article, fundamental factual errors are pointed out about Dan Brown's assertions.

He can stay away from Sevilla. I'll gladly go in his place.

4. Dan Browne sucks . . .
I've reviewed a couple of his books and I can't decide which is more inaccurate, his art history or his theology. And he can't write worth shit.

5. I'm still steaming about his remarks.
As some of you might know, I spent some time in the States.

Dan sounds as if he were an extreme case of the ugly American on the road.

What if the whole world were like Detroit? Detroit for many people is a beautiful city. For me Sevilla is beautiful city. El Barrio Santa Cruz, the Old Jewish part of town is so picturesque, the University, King Alfonso XIII Hotel.

Si tu quires, podemos charlar en espanol.
