School's IN Please urge parents to "Opt Out"
Become a "Counter-Recruiter"

call your local highschools/tech schools and find
out what days they will be holding job fairs.
Have a small booth next to the recruiters
to tell kids they do have options other
than the military for paying their way to college.

Bring an "opt out' Form, let parents know
that No Child Left Behind automatically
requires guidance counselors to give your
child's name to selective service and recruiters.

Write a LTTE!
Help us cut the war machine off at the knees!

Thanks everyone

1. "Opt Out" was part of my child's registration packet . . .
complete with a letter explaining all the ramifications of signing or not signing the form. Very thoughtful, reasoned approach . . . made me happy, even though I'd helped my child to opt out more than a year ago.

6. It's good to hear that some school districts are on top of this
I had to make about 5 phone calls to find out exactly what my school district required to opt my child out of having his personal info being released for military recruiting.

BTW, I was told that I had to do this EVERY school year.

14. That is NOT Right!
We must talk to our Congressmen and Senators
about that. What on earth makes them
think we'd ever change our mind. INSANE
they all are, ya know?

7. My son's high school didn't do anything
I have to call and get the info on how they want me to opt out. The first person I talked to had NO clue what I was talking about.

15. I gave up and decided to raise the issue in a few weeks
when things settle down. We have a new superintendent and a new HS schedule so the administration is pretty busy. My son is a freshman and only 14 so I have some time before recruiters come calling.

3. It is happening all over the country
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 01:32 PM by Generic Other
Our school district has agreed to provide students with the opt-out info at the beginning of the school year and to allow counter-recruiters to come any time recruiters are at the schools as long as students organize the events.

10. G.O. I'd love to see what a copy of that looks like!
Is is prominent- or hidden in the stack of crap
they always send home. And will parents look
at it?

12. Wow- that IS a good site!
I was invited to give a short talk at a meeting
on the middle east, at a local church. Folks
wanted to know about my trip to Crawford and
see the photos.

One groovey older woman came over to me
quietly during the talk by Alison Weir,
of IfAmericansKnew.org an organization
studying the Israeli/Palestine conflict
in relation to media coverage,
ANyway she slipped me her name, # with
a small note "Call me about Counter-recruiting"

Way cool.

BTW I will soon post on If Americans Knew
It was more of an eye opener.

5. Hey PuraVidaDreamin ......
Every time I see a post with a possible 'draft' or recruiter theme I gotta send on my nephews 'anti-draft anti-war song' which you can listen to here ... http://www.nonamesoldier.com .... maybe I should just put it in my signature line? Anyway pass it on to the kids and keep speaking out on this subject. Peace. :)

8. Awesome, Thank you so much for sharing
I've marked this to have my 18 yr old son
listen to. He's gonna be a freshman at UMASS
Dartmouth, in the music program. Been playing
on stage since he was 13.

Your kids nailed it! Can't wait to show the
band!
