I have a 500 gallon tank that usually requires filling 2x per year.

Holy shit.

This is the CHEAP time of the year. It goes up from here.

We're in real trouble. Lots of people are going to freeze this year.

3. You guys use fuel oil in SoCal?

I didn't think it got cold enough to need heat there!

Gasoline has been in the 2.80's for awhile around here. Not sure what it is now - I haven't looked since early last week.

4. Fuel oil is no where near as refined as gasolline
and should not be so close in price to gasoline. It is just gouging.

2. Mine is being filled up today.
I only have a 100-gallon tank. But I still don't want to think about what the bill is going to be.

8. Last time I got my propane bill it was $2.70 a gallon in CA and that
was in January. I don't use my heater anymore. Yes, it gets cold enough in California to need heat, especially in the mountains and high desert where it snows. We have been know to have near freezing weather here on the coast too.

11. My advice: Take up knitting
You'd be surprised how easy and quick it is to knit up a pair of socks or mittens. It's a fun and warm hobby.

12. We got my Dad to fill up in July
He used to work for a heating company and was pissed at the attitude of the company with regards to payment method. He put it off for a month and it cost an extra $150 to fill his 500 gal tank. HE wasn't happy, but he still did better than you. This is going to be a tough time for anyone that doesn't have 50% expendable income. I've got natural gas and the price increases have been even higher for that. With the hurricane screwing with NO, I'll probably see my heating bills more than double, and I don't mind wearing a coat indoors to keep the bills down. Looks like I'll be spending the winter with Mom & Dad. I'd rather pay their heating bill than mine.

Chimpy may buy himself a few points in the polls by opening up the strategic Reserves, but it will still be a real bite in the ass for most people.

14. We have double tanks, too, plus we have an oil-fired, hot water system.
We're going to invest about $3,000 in a pellet stove and pellets and I think it will be about half the cost of oil for the winter.
