Reverend Al Sharpton's driver arrested for speeding south of Dallas

Rev. Al Sharpton's driver arrested for allegedly speeding

WAXAHACHIE, Texas The Reverend Al Sharpton's driver is free on bail following his speeding arrest in Texas after being clocked going 110.

Forty-three-year-old Jarrett Barton Maupin of Phoenix was freed on a thousand-dollar bail after yesterday's arrest.

A spokesman for the Ellis County Sheriff's Department says a deputy spotted a car containing Maupin and Sharpton speeding north yesterday afternoon on Interstate 35-E, about 40 miles south of Dallas.

State troopers stopped the car just west of Waxahachie. Maupin told the troopers he was hurrying to get Sharpton and other passengers to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

I didn't think you could be arrested for just speeding? Is it because he was going so much faster than the speed limit?

1. There's a certain point where speeding becomes arrestable
In the extreme example, if I drove 200 mph on any public road I'd damn well expect to be arrested - if caught

2. He more than likely wasn't arrested for speeding
But in Texas speeds like that will get you arrested for reckless endangerment.

8. It's probably the fact he was going more than 20 or 25mph over the limit
I think that will get you arrested in just about any state.

25. If that was the case 33% of SoCal would be in jail.
Down here unless you have warrants they ticket you and send you on your way.

14. No. A friend of mine's husband decided to take
their daughter's Mitsubishi Eclipse out for a drive to "run it", he was clocked at 120.
He went to jail.
He is white, upper middle class, and well respected in this community.
It has nothing to do with color--you just can't do it.

12. Sometime they arrest you for speeding
Edited on Mon Aug-29-05 02:19 PM by DoYouEverWonder
when you have an out of state license. I think it's because they want to make sure you pay the ticket before you leave the state.

16. That's unfair
Go ahead and blast our state when it deserves it, but it doesn't matter what color you are, you will go to jail when you drive that fast.
It endangers everyone.

It was a cheap shot. I can't help it. Someday I'm gonna turn myself in to a 12-step program for cheap shot addicts.

19. Been years since I was last down South.
I seem to recall hearing abount counties/communites where if you get caught speeding, the cop making the stop will have you follow him to the nearest courthouse and you appear before the judge right then and there and either pay the fine or go to jail.

I'm guessing the above scenario applied mostly to out of state drivers.

24. State Highway Patrol - NOT rural and heavy traffic
I am sure that he was stopped by the State Highway Patrol. I have driven the route from Dallas to Crawford a number of times this month. I have never seen any local law enforcement. Were he was stopped was NOT rural. That part of I-35 usually has very heavy traffic.

I hope that they will stop anyone driving 110 on that road.

The State Highway Patrol has Republican bosses and most of the members are not Democrats. I an concerned that he might have been arrested for DWD (Driving while Democrat). He might have been speeding but 110 is difficult to believe.

21. It's called reckless endangerment
110 in a 60. When you're going that fast you're endangering everyone else on the road, so yeah, you'll be arrested.

Unlike a certain well-coiffed fellow who is currently Governor of Texas. :eyes:

26. Where did he think he was? Houston?
110 mph is ridiculous. People do drive pretty fast on I-35 though...not 110 fast, but I can't count how many times I've been passed pretty quickly while going 75-80.
