was listening to FOX radio on Tulsa KFAQ 1170am.......FOX!!!!!! cut away when W started talking immigration....this on a radio station that thinks it's treason not to play all W's speeches 'in a time of war'

they kept mentioning the speech (after 1:00pm Arizona time) and said he would probably announce opening the oil reserves

and W only said----very slowly----listen to authorities; we'll be praying for you????????

sorry if this is a dupe; just got back home for access to internet

is this a leader or is this a leader!?!?!?!?!?!

1. This is the END of our imperial
leader, George W. Bush. He is demonstrating to his staunch Southern base that he doesn't give a flying *uck about them.

3. He talked about immigration because
Pat Buchanan called for his impeachment today over his failure to build a giant wall from the Gulf to Baja. George felt the sting, I think, and is trying with this to shore up his Western red-state support.

8. Sorry Will
But there are a lot of us progressives down near the border that are negatively impacted by the illegals and would like to see something done. Not that we expect it. McCain says, pull up to a construction and you'll see mostly Mexicans and mostly illegal. I worked construction for several years here in Az and made pretty decent money but that can't be done now. The contractors claim that paying a decent wage to build houses would price homes out of the range of many people. Thay fail to mention that the CEO of KB Homes, a big builder in the area, was payed 43 million last year.

11. I'm not commenting on immigration per se
as much as I am paraphrazing the Buchanan view. Immigration is a collosally complicated issue. The agricultural industry will founder without illegals, but there is the negative impact you speak of.

I remember an editorial cartoon from Pat's '96 run. It had him standing on top of this huge wall along the border with his fist in the air, barbed wire all around...and a small door at the bottom of the wall marked "Employees Only."

15. Illegal agricultural workers are scabs hired by agrobusiness...
to break the Farm Workers Union. Ditto for illegals in the construction industry: scabs hired to bust the unions. The fact that so many so-called "Leftists" and "liberals" can't see this obvious truth and therefore support "undocumented immigration" -- scab labor and union-busting -- is one more dismal proof of the extent to which bourgeois blindness and pampered elitism have undermined Leftist solidarity in the United States.

I keep hoping the realities of the Bush economy will bring about a great awakening -- but that is probably just stupid optimism.

Meanwhile -- of course -- Bush refuses to do anything to prosecute the criminal employers who not only hire these workers but criminally encourage them to illegally enter the U.S. Why? Obvious: lowering wages by illegal scab labor depresses wages generally and thereby helps the oligarchy concentrate its wealth.

14. In other words
CEOs are hiring illegals so they can loot the money that would otherwise go to pay hardworking Americans?

Which means that George is just fine with illegal immigration.

10. Do enough people actually read that crypto-fascist's column to warrant
a rebuttal? And even if so, couldn't it wait a couple of days?

It is extremely insensitive to sluff off the disaster and instead get on the soapbox about an issue which could certainly be put in the backseat for a few days. For millions of Americans business as usual will be put on hold for weeks if not months. Surely our chief executive could have the good taste to make that his sole concern for at least 24 hours.

And I don't mean this post to be a black and white "Bush bad, we good" post, because I know there are folks capable of this kind of stupidity who have D's after their names. I'll be even more pissed if one of them pulls this sort of shit.

12. Buchanan is the avatar of the old-school conservatives
A lot of people listen to him, a lot of whom are not happy with George.

16. I'm aware of his role in the conservative movement.
I'm just questioning how much influence he really has in the role of a newspaper columnist. I've seen a poll indicating that on any given weekday only about 40% of the adult American public reads a newspaper, and one has to wonder what percentage of those folks religiously read the op-ed pages after they're done with the sports section. If he actually had his own show on FOX or something, I'd be a bit more sympathetic to the immediacy of Bush's concerns. (Fuck You! with Pat Buchanan )

It just seems that paleoconservatives who read Pat Buchanan columns are enough of a niche market in the electorate that Bush could wait to address them until after the hurricane business has subsided. That he's choosing not to wait is really, really tacky.

4. Meanwhile ...
"Cindy opened today's press conference by expressing her concern for the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. Cindy said that the people of Louisiana are in her prayers. Iraqi Veterans Against the War then called for veterans around the country to help with the disaster relief in the affected areas. It was announced that supplies donated to Camp Casey will be delivered to New Orleans when the camp is broken down on Wednesday."

---------------------------------

So ... who's the REAL patriot? Who has compassion for their fellow Americans? Who is actually trying to DO something to help the victims of Katrina?

You know your country is really screwed up when the grieving mother of a dead soldier offers more leadership and compassion for her fellow Americans than the PRESIDENT does!
