1. I'm missing the pragmatic vs. principled dichotomy.

Why is it principled to vote for someone representing my views? Should I write in my own name, as the person best suited to provide my wishes to the government?

That's not principle. That's an ego trip better reserved for the Ralph Naders and those who vote for him.

2. I gave up on the Democratic Party as a whole...

I gave up on the Democratic Party as a whole when they started blaming gays for John Kerry's blunders and failures in 2004. I got sick of being sold up the river for political expediency and running into Democrats who would support you in private but wouldn't stand up for you in public.

I used to be pragmatic but now I am principled, and I believe that we should take the money out of politics and open up the system to a wider range of views and opinions. I believe that would be the best thing for America in the long run -- even going as far as to dissolve political parties all together and forcing folks to stand on their own backgrounds, judgments and personal morality.

Those who EARN my vote get my vote.
