How hard is it for CNN to CONFIRM THE LEVEE IS BREACHED
They've had the report long enough to confirm it.

wtf?

1. They have someone from NOAA on the phone now
NOAA guy doesn't seem to know. CNN guy is asking, but he's not answering.

4. Yeah, how the heck is a guy from NOAA supposed to know
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 02:22 AM by crispini
about flooding of NOLA? He knows about the WEATHER, not NOLA geography. (edited to add, what I mean is, it's stupid even to ask h him this question.)

2. It's pitch black over there
There aren't any lights or power for them. What they've got are reports from the cops.

3. They have lights on their cameras to broadcast
They were given the location of the breach. You think they'd be able to find it.

6. They're probably not too eager to travel into a flood zone.
Especially since people are trying to evacuate from there. I don't think the cops will let them in either.

But surely somebody has a chopper and CNN will pick up the feed.

11. What are you going to see with a chopper?
It's supposedly two blocks long. I don't think they have a spot light that big. Plus since the hospitals are supposedly evacuating by air, they probably want less air traffic in the area.

14. The copter's spotlight is plenty bright.
And keeping an eye on the levees is, I'm sure, I damn high priority.

Can you come up with any other excuses? :)

17. landing
Where is the chopper supposed to land? Everything around there is flooded for miles and miles. Both of NOs airports are underwater... The top of a large downtown building maybe, but have any of them been quipped for night chopper landings?

25. yes
They are scrambling to air lift people out of there. I'm thinking cnn had/has one or two choppers which would have been at one of the airports. The airports did'nt flood til this evening when the levee broke. The coast guard/NAVY would probably be in the best position to send choppers over NO right now.

18. A spotlight is not going to cover 2 blocks
Maybe 50 feet wide at most, in windy conditions, with other helicopters in the region, in pitch blackness. That's all the excuse I need.

32. coast guard
Coast guard has choppers with spotlights over NO right now. CNN person would have to hitch a ride with them I imagine to get a report. I don't expect to see anything til dawn personally.

37. Why would it need to cover 2 blocks?
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 03:54 AM by greyl
It's just not logical that the beam needs to be as big as the hole.

edit: maybe we have a misunderstanding. I'm talking about copters in general, not CNN copters specifically.

12. But it would only be by boat or helicopter
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 02:27 AM by DinoBoy
Again, almost completely in the dark, and even with minimal lights, they don't have standard geographical landmarks to guide them.

I don't doubt that CNN is sending someone there, but at the moment it's the blind leading the blind, so don't expect anything fast...

5. No shit..... this is a crime......
One upside you would fucking think of having a coporate controlled media is that they would be able to cover shit like this much more comprehensively and more real-time. What many of us have been fearing for 30+ hours now seems to be happening. The Great City of New Orleans is sinking into the sea and our Corporate Media and Bush are totally AWOL.

Finding this out for us at DU, or evacuating hospitals, and rescuing people.

It is just such an incredibly HUGE development that I could not imagine CNN not being able to get a handle on it quickly through the police or whatever contact the press is using.

My heart and hopes are with all the people involved.

34. HOLY SHIT!!! I guess this is why...
getting nightime video for the media so people can sit home and watch the devastation is not exactly a priority:

<...>
"As night fell on a devastated region, the water was still rising in the city, and nobody was willing to predict when it would stop. After the destruction already apparent in the wake of Katrina, the American Red Cross was mobilizing for what regional officials were calling the largest recovery operation in the organization’s history.

Police, firefighters and private citizens, hampered by a lack of even rudimentary communication capabilities, continued a desperate and impromptu boat-borne rescue operation across Lakeview well after dark. Coast Guard choppers with search lights criss-crossed the skies."
<...>

One hell of a mess down there, and those people dealing with it are the real heroes.

35. CNN= "Contains No News"
These clueless talking head ASSHATS don't
report ANYTHING until they see it on other cable networks.

Last time I checked CNN, they were still saying there were
ten thousand folks sheltering in the Superdome...
...A full 24 hours after I watched
LIVE STREAMING VIDEO of the OFFICER in charge
saying that they were over 25 thousand, and approaching 30!

CNN can kiss my shiny metal ASS!
They can't even COUNT, and they IGNORE people who can!

Thank GORE for the "internets"!
