5. They are still meeting and strategizing.
They haven't even gone to the site for a survey yet.

I know it's dark, and dangerous. But the sense of urgency seems very lacking.

7. My sentiments as well.
They should be scrambling to fix this.

"Brainstorming," they claim. Now is NOT the time to brainstorm. Haven't they rehearsed or considered such a scenario before? I thought they were supposed to be the prepared ones..

14. There's not a hell of a lot they can do at this point.
When you have such a catostrophic breach under these conditions, plugging it is impossible. I live in No. CA and I've been through levee breaks. Not this big, but enough to know the position they're in.

8. I really don't think there's anything they can do at this time
I'm guessing by the time they were alerted, the break had already done most of it's damage. We'll see..

11. Still a couple of hours before sunrise
We'll get alot more info and footage then.

Seems like only the Coast Guard (and the one private chopper) had helicopters up doing *anything* yesterday.

Wonder why the Coast Guard couldn't get some National Guard helicopters in the mix yesterday.

I wonder where they are. Lakefront Airport is out of commission now, though according to Mayor Nagin.

23. I'm so sorry Swamp Rat. New Orleans is filling with our tears
and the unfathomable depths of our despair. I don't think the country is yet fully aware or has come to grips with what is happening. It is as impossible to fathom as the falling of the Twin Towers...even with the warnings of such a scenario. The mayor's words continue to penetrate....

Have you reached your Mother yet?

10. I don't think there's anything to do. This was the worst case scenario
and it was considered the worst because once the levee is breached there is nothing to do but keep pumping....and pumping...and pumping.

That's all she wrote.

maybe this is an answer ?

Officials of the Army Corps of Engineers have contingencies for levee breaches such as the one that happened Monday, but it will take time and effort to get the heavy equipment into place to make the repair. Breach repair is part of the Corps’ planning for recovery from catastrophic storms, but nobody Monday was able to say how long it would take to plug the hole, or how much water would get through it before that happened.

17. heavy equipment?
I would seriously like to know what they have that can stop millions of gallons of water flowing through a huge breach. Sure, they could fix it after the water equalizes I suppose, but too late then...

19. I saw the Army Corp of Engineers install a huge breakwater--stone
--around an island near Mpls-St Paul this summer---once they got started it took them a few hours. Island was saved.. I know this is not the best analogy--but I give them credit for the feets they try to do.

Levee breach floods Lakeview, Mid-City, Carrollton, Gentilly, City Park
By Doug MacCash
and James O’Byrne
Staff writers

A large section of the vital 17th Street Canal levee, where it connects to the brand new ‘hurricane proof’ Old Hammond Highway bridge, gave way late Monday morning in Bucktown after Katrina’s fiercest winds were well north. The breach sent a churning sea of water coursing across Lakeview and into Mid-City, Carrollton, Gentilly, City Park and neighborhoods farther south and east.

26. So it took a very long time for this to be reported?
From what I understand, the mayor announced it around 2:00 a.m. today.

From what I read, the levee broke during daylight hours. That means the levee was broken for over 12 hours before it was announced? Is that the case?

I'm watching Ch. 7 ABC television news which started at 5 a.m. They have not concentrated on the levee break, and only moments ago said that only Ward 4 is suffering from the levee break.

Somewhere, I read that the mayor said 80% of the city is underwater. I'm left not knowing what is going on. How severe is this? Is New Orleans drowning?

27. It is hard to tell
It could have been a relatively small break that kept on getting bigger as the water and wind kept pounding it.

29. another version
Even with Katrina to the north, a large section of the vital 17th Street Canal levee gave way Monday afternoon in New Orleans, sending a churning sea of water coursing across the western part of the city.

Residents who had ridden out the brunt of Katrina now faced a second more insidious threat as flood waters continued their ascent well into the night.
