7. FEMA list of organizations
Cash Sought To Help Hurricane Victims, Volunteers Should Not Self-Dispatch

Release Date: August 29, 2005
Release Number: HQ-05-177

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Voluntary organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Gulf Coast states, according to Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response. But, volunteers should not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a voluntary agency.

“Cash donations are especially helpful to victims,” Brown said. “They allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require.”

Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food.

“We’re grateful for the outpouring of support already,” Brown said. “But it’s important that volunteer response is coordinated by the professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardest-hit areas where they are needed most. Self-dispatched volunteers and especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm’s way and hamper rescue efforts.”

Here is a list of phone numbers set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers.

Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 03:59 PM by FrustratedDemInNC
Operation Blessing
1-800-436-6348

This is a Pat Robertson operation even though they just list his initials, very misleading.

Operation Blessing International Relief and Development Corporation (OBI) is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) humanitarian organization based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. Since 1978, Operation Blessing International has touched the lives of more than 179.7 million people in 96 countries and all 50 states, providing goods and services valued at more than $1.1 billion. Operation Blessing is governed by a national board of directors that includes founder M. G. Robertson and retired COO Robert W. Fanning.

Why have 2 different relief sites both connected to Pat Robertson?

I wouldn't trust any group affiliated with the RW fundies.

139. The thing to bear in mind with that "Operation Blessing" outfit,
is that although it's stridently "religious", FEMA didn't include it with the other religious groups. Instead, it jumped it up right below the Red Cross. ANOTHER example of Dubya whoring after the theocracy vote.

41. HELLO? Everyone of those in FEMA's list is a religious organization . . .
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 08:43 PM by TaleWgnDg
HELLO? Every one of those in FEMA's list is a religious organization or has systemic ties w/ religious organizations . . . Indeed.

Yes, the Salvation Army is a religion. And, the Salvation Army discriminates in its hiring and firing policies against gays as can other religions. And, the Salvation Army was brought into federal court because it failed to pay minimum wage to recovering substance abusers and alcoholics! Failed to pay a wage when working for the Salvation Army. The court ordered the Salvation Army to pay those workers or not to hire them for work, period.

The sole exception in FEMA's list that is not affiliated with any religion or religious institution is the American Red Cross, period. F*ck this Bush Administration in buying votes through religions!!

America's Second Harvest:

"Q: What Kinds of Organizations Operate A2H Emergency Food Programs?

165. Faith-based FEMA list makes me suspicious and doubtful
I was struck by how many of orgs on the FEMA list are "faith-based". where is OXFAM for example? I know they are active. Also they are an excellent group with strong track record.
There are probably better examples. But - this FEMA list seems very skewed toward the faith based groups and that troubles me.

i want my money to go to organisations that are effective, efficient and NON religious, non faith-based.

(Ideally - I would like my taxes- within a restructured and progressive tax system - to be used for thie relief and resettlemnt effort.)

20. Definitely not religious!
I work for a regional affiliate in Michigan. Second Harvest and its member agencies are NOT religious organizations.

In order for local agencies to receive food from Secon Harvest or its affiliates, they have to sign a document saying that they will not require recipients to sit through any type of service or even a prayer to receive the food (nor can the recipients be made to pay or work for the food). Some of the agencies which receive and distribute the food may be churches or church-related, and let me tell you these groups have more integrity than some other well-known nonprofits with no religious affiliation (I will not name names).

Peace!

Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 04:18 PM by TaleWgnDg
.
GoddessofGuinness, please see my post #45 in this DU thread, because America's Second Harvest is by its own admission(1) very heavily affiliated with "faith-based" (religious) organizations! And I believe the truth should be told.

In addition, many Americans who want to uphold the U.S. constitution's Separation of Church and State believe, legally, that George Walker Bush's FEMA should not proselytize "faith-based" (religious) organizations on taxpayer funded websites such as FEMA!

Your question was a good one, indeed.

Since so many of us are animal lovers at DU...I just wanted to forward the link to you if anyone might be interested in donating to the Katrina rescue efforts for pets. The URL is http://www.uan.org. Lots of people worry about the four-legged people in these situations I thought I'd forward the info. UAN is usually the first-response team, working along side the Red Cross in pet rescues.

Some close friends of mine donate time to this organization and really recommend them.

197. Thanks for that. I feel bad. I have donated the same amount
for animals as I have for people. Does that make me kind of evil? you would think someone would give more $$ for people than animals but damn, I really can't take stand seeing those poor stranded dogs they keep showing.

Do we know if anybody is trying to find out who is in shelters? Or providing a place for people who have moved out to hotels to check in to say if they are safe?

97. nola.com has a forum where people can

post to ask for info on people or to let others know they are safe. I'm sure there must be other similar forums but this is set up by the New Orleans Times-Picayune so people from NO would likely think of it as a resource.

217. **** MISSING PEOPLE SEARCH Engines & Websites *****
Edited on Sun Sep-18-05 08:35 PM by intheflow
Yahoo Katrina Missing People Search Engine - Searches Katrina lists from across the web

Red Cross Family News Network

National Center for Missing and Exploited Children - for both missing and found children.

Find Your New Orleans Employer - Site operated by The Chamber of Commerce of Greater Baton Rouge

Patients Evacuated from Louisiana Hospitals - from the Louisiana Hospital Association

Louisiana Nursing Home Information - from the Louisiana Nursing Home Association

East Baton Rouge Shelter Listing - Baton Rouge Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness

Missing Foreign Nationals - Dept. of State list of US Embassy contact info

National Next of Kin Registry - Nonprofit. Register a missing person or read message board to search for people.

craigslist Katrina People Finder

Most of these sites are listed on the FEMA website. The FEMA site also has a List of Evacuees from Alabama Shelters, but I can't get it to link to this page. So if you're looking for someone who may have gone to Alabama, go to the FEMA page and look them up.

36. McCormick Tribune Foundation is matching donations
From their site:

The McCormick Tribune Foundation Hurricane Katrina Relief Campaign has
been established as an effort between
McCormick Tribune Foundation and many
of its Communities Program Partners to
raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina. The McCormick Tribune Foundation will match the first $1,000,000 contributed to the campaign at 50 cents on the dollar. All administrative costs will be paid by the foundation so that all funds can be distributed directly to disaster relief organizations that provide short and long-term aid to those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

http://www.rrmtf.org/mtf/hurricanerelief.htm

More information on the McCormick Tribune Foundation:
http://www.rrmtf.org/mtf/mtfinfo.htm

And remember to check with your employer to see if they may be matching funds for donations to the Red Cross and other national organizations. Some employers will match dollar-per-dollar.

Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 09:34 AM by nuxvomica
I just noticed they updated the match on September 1 because they had already received $1 million in donations. The match is still 50 cents on the dollar.

Online donation form:

Again, please remember to check with your employer's HR department about charitable donations. Some may match donations at dollar-per-dollar or even better.

56. Thanks to whoever suggested Noah's Wish....
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 08:27 AM by fudge stripe cookays
My cousin in Wisconsin e-mailed me last night completely bereft about a friend of hers in NO who was doing dog rescue, and had about 25 in various stages of blindness, cancer, epilepsy, and old age.

They tried to get them out; her husband wanted to get a big air conditioned truck to get them all out of harm's way, but it was too late when the implications of the hurricane began getting clearer.

Pat has not heard from her friend. She figures the dogs are probably gone, and she's afraid her friend may have died trying to save her babies.

I was so upset I practically bawled when I got her e-mail. I figure the Red Cross and blood banks and such are going to be overwhelmed with kindnesses very soon. Not as many people think of the pets.

reprehensor and I are giving a huge donation to Noah's Wish today. So I can feel like I'm doing something to help all the scared, helpless furbabies suffering through this too.

63. United Health Care offers free crisis hotline
The effects of hurricane Katrina have, and continue to, take a devastating toll on our neighbors in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Many of us have family, friends and co-workers in the areas affected by the storm. Our thoughts are with those who have experienced loss and those who may be in a period of uncertainty.

UnitedHealthcare, in conjunction with LifeEra and Optum, has opened a crisis hotline to help individuals in Gulf Coast states impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina cope with the emotional aftermath of this traumatic event. While these services are routinely available to UnitedHealthcare customers, the hotline set up for Hurricane Katrina is designed to address the needs of all residents affected by the hurricane.

Callers can speak with counselors to help them handle the difficult emotions they may experience such as stress, anxiety and the grieving process. Callers also may receive referrals from a national database of community resources to help them with specific concerns, such as financial and legal issues. Callers who may have suffered physical trauma or symptoms will be transferred to a nurse who will be able to provide health education and decision support regarding the need for medical treatment. Internet resources are available through www.liveandworkwell.com.

The toll-free crisis hotline number is (866) 615-8700. It will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for as long as necessary. Service is free of charge.

65. an email from a good liberal staff person at work
"I'm writing to give you information about an opportunity to contribute to Hurrican Katrina housing relief. Last night I spoke to my good friend, Penny Dendy, the director of Volunteer Mobile, about the damage in Mobile County from Katrina. She told me it was by far the worst she had seen from a hurricane. For example, she described the devastation in Bayou Le Batre, a small fishing community, SW of Mobile toward the Gulf. Many houses were destroyed, others were knocked from the foundations. One woman came up to the emergency management group Penny was with and pointed to a nearby house. The woman tearfully explained that the house was her sister's house and she could not find her sister.

Penny said the fishing industry, which provides a lot of low-wage jobs, is almost destroyed with boats missing or blown from their moorings and heavily damaged and processing plants washed out by the surging waters. Plus, the shrimp beds along the tributaries and in the Gulf are all messed up.

The good news is that Volunteer Mobile is leading an effort to begin to restore homes. They work with homeowners, primarily low-income, who have FEMA grants or other resources. Volunteer Mobile finds volunteers to contribute time to rebuild houses. Thus, Volunteer Mobile can stretch people's money from the small, often inadequate, grants.

You can contribute to this effort by sending a check to
Long-Term Recovery

66. Employer Matching Grants limited eligible institutions
My employer matches grants for charities that fall into one of three categories

  • Cultural or environmental institutions

  • Colleges and universities

  • Hospices, hospitals, and nursing homes

Specifically excluded are health and medical organizations, social welfare organizations, religious, political, public affairs, fraternal and social organizations, SPCA - Humane Societies, City beautification projects, Capital campaigns, construction and renovation projects.

They seem to have done a pretty good job of excluding all of the institutions I'd want to donate to.

Any suggestions for an organization that would fit an eligible category?

152. Houston overview - useful info
Houston raised $6+ million the first day to help. Houston has taken in an estimated 100,000, perhaps 150,000 displaced people.

Quick guide to help in Houston, where the agencies are now showing a few signs of coordination, and aren't contradicting themselves every few minutes.

http://www.uwtgc.org - United Way info

Call 211 -- that's the local Katrina hotline

http://katrina.uwtgc.org/pdfs/HChron_UWTGC_Katrina_Ad.pdf - another overview for those who need help, and those who want to help

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) 800-621-FEMA (621-3362) - making contact with them can help get housing grants a start on processing.

Where to find a Red Cross shelter in Houston: 1-866-GETINFO (1-866-438-4636).

Doctors and nurses who can volunteer at refugee clinics should call the Harris County Hospital District, which is coordinating care, at 832-667-3153. They are seeing very large numbers of patients, with a broad array of problems.

83. How craigslist.com is helping. This is very important!!!
Help Katrina Victims

Tags: neworleans, katrina, tropical, storm, rain, hurricane @ 08:36PM (PDT) on August 30, 2005

One of my friends is trying to get the Craigslist postings re: Katrina victims posted and announced through as many sources as possible. As you look at these listings he's included, you will find there are enormous resources available to victims of the Katrina hurricane - but no one knows about them unless they know about Craigslist. He's finding offers for all types of assistance are getting posted from all over the world. The sooner this information can get pushed out there, the less the effect of this devastation should have upon the Katrina victims.

He asks me to help. I'm helping.

Housing - there are enormous amounts of free housing offers for Katrina victims here.

Community Board - There are hundreds of postings of survivors looking for info on relatives and others as well as offers for free housing and offers to help.

For Sale - Lots of listings for free housing, free items for Katrina victims.

Services - Professionals offering their services for free for the Katrina-effected areas.

I'd watch out for poachers and evildoers, even on Craigslist. If there's looting and polluting going on in Nawlins, you can assume the same thing can and will happen online. Seriously, now is not the time to let your guard down. I hope all of my readers who have endured hurricane Katrina are (and remain) safe.

85. John Kerry Appeals for Help for Katrina Victims
John Kerry Appeals for Help for Katrina Victims
August 31st, 2005

John Kerry sent out an email to the members of JohnKerry.com appealing for help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Here’s the text:

Dear Friend,

This is a time for all Americans to pull together and do everything we can to assist people whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

If you haven’t acted already, I urge you to join in delivering immediate help to the people who need it most. One way to do that is to support the relief and recovery efforts of the Red Cross with a personal donation. Donate to the Red Cross. - https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

As we hold those who are going through so much pain and suffering in our prayers, I know you’ll do everything you can to reach out and help.

Sincerely,
John Kerry

P.S. There are a host of other volunteer relief agencies doing essential life-saving work in this emergency. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which is coordinating the federal government’s response efforts, has posted a list of recommended groups on its website.

The following statement is from John Kerry’s Senate website:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the thousands of families affected by Hurricane Katrina. Katrina’s unprecedented devastation has cost those in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi their homes, their loved ones, even their lives. Our great nation must come together to comfort and bring relief to those in the Gulf Coast suffering from this blow. Local leaders and National Guard forces have bravely started the effort, but they need all of our help.{/b}

86. Profiting from Katrina
I have a complaint against Northwest Airlines customer service regarding canceling my flight reservation to New Orleans for Oct. 8, 2005. I called to cancel my flight after the tragic storm wiped out New Orleans on Aug. 30, 2005. I was told by Northwest Airlines customer service that I would be charged a 100-dollar penalty. They told me it was not that bad and that I am over exaggerating the conditions in New Orleans. I asked for the supervisor her name was Kelley, she told me that all will be fine in a few days. I was shocked that NWA customer service and their supervisors were telling me. They also stated that in October the airport will be fine and that it is not their fault for the disaster for it was an act of God. Northwest airlines will penalize anyone canceling their trip to New Orleans after Sept. 3, 2005 because they say it is not that bad down their and all will be fine in a few days. NWA said long as the airport is open I must take my flight, even if New Orleans is still off limits to the public or be penalized 100 dollars. My trip was to be on Oct. 8, 2005. NWA said,” you would not even notice there was a storm there”, by the time I take my trip. I could not believe they think the storm is nothing serious and that I can avoid the penalty by taking my trip to New Orleans Oct. 8 2005. On Aug. 31, 2005 I called NWA again about the 100-dollar penalty for canceling my trip their response was no one would be penalized if their trip were before Oct. 1, 2005. Also NWA told me many others are being charged 100 dollars per person for their cancellations, because their hotels are completely destroyed. This NWA ticket I had for New Orleans I was using my frequent fly-er miles so I could have a free trip to New Orleans. Now I have paid 100 dollars to NWA for a city I can not fly too because it no longer exist at this time. I am asking the FAA to investigate them for them rapping customers with penalties when they want to cancel their trips to New Orleans, so we will not be in the way of the massive clean up. Plus someone must talk to these customer service people that this tragic incident is very serious. I believe that anyone that wants to cancel his or her trip to any of the major disaster areas should not be fined 100-dollars. Most states have laws that penalizing business’s for charging fines or raising prices from maybe the worst disaster in USA history. I am writing to my congressman and all three major cable news networks on this matter. I hope that you can intervene and stop Northwest Airlines from making monies of this most tragic incident. The monies they are taking from the consumers unfairly should be given to the disaster relief fund.

92. TV Fund Raisers for Katrina Survivors to Begin this Weekend
From AP Newswire this morning:

LOS ANGELES - Hurricane Katrina telethons reminiscent of benefits for tsunami and 9/11 victims will feature artists including Wynton Marsalis and Green Day, while Jerry Lewis' annual Labor Day fundraiser also will join in.

Lewis said his telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association would include celebrity appeals for hurricane relief. MDA will donate $1 million as well to help victims in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, he said.

"I need the American people to know I don't want you to forget my (MDA) kids because that suffering is ongoing," Lewis told a Beverly Hills news conference on Wednesday. But he called on donors to divide their compassion in half.

"If you want to send me 20 bucks for my kids, send 10. Send the other 10 to these people in this trouble," the actor-comedian said.

The broadcast begins at 9 p.m. EDT Sunday and ends at 5:30 p.m. EDT Monday (check local listings for station).

A special 800 phone number will be used for the Katrina donations, with proceeds going to the Salvation Army in the hard-hit states.

Additionally, "A Concert for Hurricane Relief" will air on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC at 8 p.m. EDT Friday, NBC Universal Television Group announced Wednesday.

The hourlong special, hosted by Matt Lauer in New York, is scheduled to include performances by Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr. and Tim McGraw, all with ties to the affected areas, NBC said. Leonardo DiCaprio and other celebrities are expected to participate.

Viewers will be encouraged to donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Another aid effort was announced by MTV Networks, starting with a Saturday, Sept. 10, music special airing on MTV, VH1 and CMT and intended to raise funds for the American Red Cross and other organizations.

Besides Green Day, scheduled performers include Ludacris, Gretchen Wilson, Usher, Alicia Keys, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews Band, Rob Thomas, David Banner and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.

The special also will be available on MTV2, mtvU and VH1 Classic, as well as broadband video networks MTV Overdrive and VSpot.

Also Wednesday, MTV Networks' parent company, Viacom, announced a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross and a worldwide matching gift program for employee donations. Other support efforts are planned by Viacom media properties including BET, CBS and UPN, the company said.

Today being the first day of the month, many people are relying on checks to arrive.

Basically, the US Postal Service is advising evacuees to let them know your temporary address, and they will forward your mail.

There is zero mail service in New Orleans.

First class mail for New Orleans is being held in Dallas.

114. For the knitters and crocheters:
Webs ( http://yarn.com/ ) is giving 10% of their profits this week and next (through the 10th) for the victims to the Red Cross. Some other online shops are doing the same. Knitty.com's message board has a couple threads of lists in the General Chatty Section.

Also, many of us are making Warm Up America afghan squares for the Red Cross shelters. Warm Up America asks that the yarn be 100% acrylic (for allergies and washability) and that only completed afghans be sent to them. Actually, they'd prefer if we donated our afghans locally, as many Red Cross supplies are being sent to the afflicted areas from local shelters all over the country. There still are big needs locally (although not nearly on the same level), and our own chapters will need the afghans as well.

The squares are to be 7"x9" in worsted weight acrylic, and it takes 49 of them to make an afghan.

If you wish to do baby blankets or stuffed animals, Project Linus will most likely get involved, as well as TKGA's Precious Pals program. There is going to be a huge need for all of the refugees, especially the smallest ones who have lost everything.

119. ATLANTA GA - Evacuee Care
Subject: Helping Mayor Shirley Franklin with people who arrived in Atlanta because of Hurricane Katria
>
My gym is located in the Adamsville Recreation Center in Atlanta.
The American Red Cross asked Mayor Shirley Franklin to open the center as a designated shelter for those women, men and children who
evacuated from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
>
While visiting the gym this morning, I had the opportunity to speak
with the Mayor Franklin and she shared with me some of the need of the people in the shelter.
>
She indicated that she wants to provide more than just shelter, but
assist with getting the more than 60 children in school, so she has
people from the Atlanta School System on site and the Mayor also
wants to assist with locating employment for the adults. There are
about 300 people in the shelter this morning.
>
The mayor has deployed her staff, staff from the Atlanta Workforce
Development Agency and numerous other city support service agencies to the center to assist the evacuates.
>
Mayor Franklin mentioned that people can assist by donating the
following items:
> *Underwear
> *Socks for women, men and children
> *Packages of Diapers
> *Work clothes for women , men and children
> *Shoes for women, men and children
> *Clothes for children
> *Packages of Water
> *Packages of Juice
> *Packages of Toiletries
>
The people left their homes with only the clothes on their backs.

What they are doing....
If we can make an announcement Saturday for help in collecting funds and nonperishable items we got the means to get it there. Marc and these truck drivers are willing to take the risk of delivering the goods. I will be setting up Sat. with you and Sunday and Monday at Big Kmart on Goldenrod & University Blvd. to take up collections.

We have just been offered trucks from the FFA in Stark Florida Bradford VoTech center and Channel 35 on making arrangements to send truck loads of nonperishable items to the storm victims. The school is donating the use of trucks & drivers to our organization and
our President Marc will be in charge of driving the truck loads to those in need. We are currently asking for help in raising money and more items. We already have 2.5 warehouses full of items ready to send.

Currently we are supplying food, pet food, and health aids to families here in Orlando of whom are housing friends, relatives and pets from the hurricane areas. Several of these victims will be here for a while for they have no homes to go back to.

Any help right now is greatly needed with funding the delivery of items needed to get to both the people and animals in need.

Please feel free to contact Terri Barton at 321-377-8483 cell

127. Secular Humanist Aid and Relief Effort
An urgent memo from Paul Kurtz, Chairman of the Center for Inquiry:

Please help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Donate today!

We are deeply distressed by the terrible tragedy caused by Hurricane Katrina. Tens of thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and many are without power or water. Unknown numbers of people remain trapped in New Orleans, and emergency response teams are overwhelmed. The Center for Inquiry and its affiliated organizations have launched an initiative to raise charitable funds for the area. We encourage all humanists, skeptics and rationalists to step forward and make a contribution through SHARE, the Secular Humanist Aid and Relief Effort.

All donations to SHARE from this campaign will go to AmeriCares for the benefit of victims of Hurricane Katrina. AmeriCares is a nonprofit aid and relief organization that coordinates distribution of medical supplies in response to natural disasters and for long-term humanitarian assistance programs. AmeriCares maintains stocks of emergency medical supplies and works with corporate donors to get needed supplies to disaster areas. They provide blankets, disaster relief supplies, vaccines, diapers, water purifers, tents, food, and other emergency items. AmeriCares also has an extremely low overhead, so donations go directly to help those in need.

132. FEMA not allowed to aid gay families. Donate 2 Hurricane Katrina LGBT Fund
Edited on Fri Sep-02-05 12:49 PM by IanDB1

Katrina Delivers Second Blow To Gay Families
by Fidel Ortega 365Gay.com Miami Bureau

Posted: September 1, 2005 5:00 pm ET

(Dallas, Texas) Recovering from the devastation of hurricane Katrina may be particularly difficult for same-sex couples who are not recognized in any of the three states directly hit by the storm or in those states where refugees have fled.

Louisiana has a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and prevents the state from recognizing any legal status for common-law relationships, domestic partnerships or civil unions. Mississippi and Alabama both have defense of marriage acts which also deny rights to gay and lesbian couples.

The Federal Defense of Marriage Act prevents FEMA from providing any relief in the form of family benefits to same-sex couples.

The laws also will directly impact gay and lesbian families where one partner has died as a result of the hurricane.

Federal DOMA bars Social Security survivor benefits. State benefits would also be denied.

YOU CAN HELP LGBT FAMILIES AND YOUTH IMPACTED BY HURRICANE KATRINA

Dear Family Pride Members and Supporters,

In Hurricane Katrina, Mother Nature provided an awesome reminder of her power, and the power of the indomitable spirit of our fellow Americans.

The complete destruction of cities, towns and neighborhoods in the poorest states in our union, and the complete loss of everything for so many, is almost unfathomable. I’m sure you’re aware that thousands of families have absolutely nothing to go home to and hundreds more people are still looking for their families.

We are awed and humbled by the spirit of community that has emerged in our country in countless ways over the past few days; and we honor the courage and hope shown by so many who are still suffering.

In the face of their strength – now is the time to act.

In partnership with many organizations around the country, the Family Pride Coalition and our partners have launched the “Hurricane Katrina LGBT Relief Fund” to ensure that LGBT youth and families, among the most vulnerable members of our community, receive the critical support they need to regain stability in their lives.

The next few days are critical. No amount is too small to make a difference.

Outstanding national partners are working together to support this effort and are listed below. More groups are joining all the time.

You can invest in this life-saving effort right now at http://www.nyacyouth.org/.

Contributions to the fund are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed under law and will support humanitarian relief for LGBTQ youth and families from the devastated areas. These funds will be distributed directly to local organizations in the best position to ensure strategic and high-impact disbursement of the emergency funds.

As a first step, on Tues., Sept. 6 the Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals (H.A.T.C.H.) and Montrose Counseling Center will host one of a series of special support groups for the refugees to help them manage their stress, grief and fear.

Find out more about the impact of your gift in the coming weeks on a new blog on the NYAC website. Thank you for your investment today in protecting and restoring the lives of LGBTQ families and young people.

We will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Chrisler

Oxfam America Responds to Hurricane Katrina

---
We at Oxfam America express our sorrow and sympathy for the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. While the hurricane affected hundreds of thousands of people, those living in deep poverty were hit the hardest. They include many families who are members of our grassroots partner organizations in rural areas of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

Oxfam generally focuses its emergency response on regions where governments and civil society groups have little or no capacity to respond effectively, which is seldom the case in the United States. But, despite all the resources available for relief after Katrina, we’re concerned that some poor communities still may not receive the support they need for long-term recovery of their assets and livelihoods.

We are now assessing the situation to determine where our help is needed most. Coastal flooding may have caused severe damage to farmers’ fields and to fisheries, for example, jeopardizing the livelihoods of the fishing and farming communities where our partners work. But we know already that they will need our support to get back on their feet.

We have therefore created the Hurricane Katrina Response and Recovery Fund, https://secure.ga3.org/02/katrina_fund
to channel support to our partners and the communities where they work and live. We will update this site as further details of our response are available.

159. update from Camp Casey in Covington La.
lastest report came in at 1;18, from Gordon VFP

Edited from post..

They do not have power or cell phones yet. They are working with both local P. and Red Cross there.

Have U-Haul to get supplies in from Baton Rouge. Need fuel support.
Need more people, trucks, supplies. Did get supplies from Ala. church today.

So far the count looks to be 5 different trucks headed that way from Norman, Crawford, Waco, Ft. Hood, and Austin.

http://crawfordpeace.nfshost.com/node/1794

Covington is on the north side of the lake. Food and water assistance, and a medical station have been set up.

They do have internet SAT hook up on Bus

176. Camp Casey in Crawford has moved to Covington La.
The Vets For Peace are now working to support Katrina Victims as close as they were allowed to go, keeping in mind, as many as 1 Million have no home to return to, at least not just yet.

Heard from Gordon there today, via SAT link up on Bus.
No power, no cell phone access, no water, no food, no medical attention, no access to a place to stay.

Supplies are getting in.

They still need people to run supplies from Baton Rouge to Covington.
They need nurses. They need water. They need food. They need fuel.

James went out Yesterday from Crawford and has not been heard from since, however others are reaching Covington.

Andrea is on her way to Baton Rouge with Van and U-Haul trailer full of supplies. In two days they raised $5K to support her N.O. Community. Now she hears they want everyone out. She may go on to Covington or remain in Baton Rouge until she knows it is safe to go in to N.O.

Air America Public Voicemail
1-866-217-6255

Air America Radio's Public Voicemail is a way for disconnected people to communicate in the wake of Katrina.

Here's how it works:

Call the toll-free number above, enter your everyday phone number, and then record a message. Other people who know your everyday phone number (even if it doesn't work anymore) can call Emergency Voicemail, enter the phone number they associate with you, and hear your message.

You can also search for messages left by people whose phone numbers you know.
Air America Radio will leave Public Voicemail in service for as long as this crisis continues. You can call it whenever you are trying to locate someone, or if you are trying to be found.

144. Ask your mayor to shelter victims in your city
It is time for the Progressives to take matters into their own hands.
We have this power, if we know how to use it:

I urge each of you to contact the mayor of your city and ask them to
do as other mayors are doing in other cities - offer lodging and
assistance to hurricane victims in your city.

Let hotels and motels provide rooming, cruise ships house people,
provide food, room and shelter.

Astrodomes are not intended as living quarters, and it is absolutely
ludicrous to put people there, when there are so many better
solutions.

If our federal govt doesn't care, then work locally!

It will help people, it will get the job done, and it will paint the
picture of truth more vividly than anything else we can do.

SHOW THE CONSERVATIVES WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVT SHOULD DO BUT FAILED TO
DO.

Our local officials are accountable to us, still. Urge them to
be good samaritans NOW. People are dying, for no good reason.

Please urge citizens in your locality to join you in contacting your
mayor to provide shelter for some of the hurricane vicyims.
You can do that tonight and all through the week-end.

I know Michele frequently posted on DU. I do not know her user name. She worked with me. Has anyone heard from her? I know she was not at home but she remained on the coast during the storm. I only found steps where her house once was. We lost home and contents but escape safely with family and brothers. THe gov't is moving much too slow. We need gas, water and food down here. We are doing fine except for gas. Others are suffering tremendously especially in West coastal counties of Mississippi and Slidel and New Orleans. Please pray for them. If you hear from Michele, tell her john Whitfield is living with a friend, all is well and I can be reached at 229-832-3267. God bless you

http://www.coffeecup.com/hurricane/

This company is in Texas. If you click the link, it shows the geographical area where they will deliver the stuff they collect. You can order stuff online (like at Amazon) and mail it straight to their site, that way you don't have to bag it up your self and ship it.

A portion of their appeal, from the website:

Since we are located in Corpus Christi, Texas (a couple of hours south of Houston and San Antonio), we are calling upon anyone who received the email or who visits our site to send 'Comfort Goods' to our office. Comfort items will directly help the estimated 100,000 American refugees that will be entering Houston, San Antonio, and throughout Texas within the next days and weeks.

We are collecting things such as toys, personal hygiene items, and clothing for adults and children alike. 'Things that if you yourself were placed in a hotel for months would make your life easier and more pleasant'. Read our first email

Our office will collect what you send and will drive these items by cargo truck to the refugees where they are located.

Please send 'Comfort Goods' like these to our office at the address below:

* Diapers, Baby Wipes, Infant Care Items
* Personal Care Items (soap, razors, shaving cream, toothpaste, hygiene items)

http://www.goodbearsoftheworld.org/

I don't know if this group will kick-in in the coming weeks of Hurricane Katrina Recovery and Relief, but there's a pretty good chance they will.

After 9/11 and the Tsunami they gave out thousands of Teddy Bears to victims ... adults and children alike.

This DoD article talks about the bears given to 9/11 victims.

http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Sep2001/n09202001_200109204.html

Right now I'm sure they're staying low as it's much more important to save lives than give out stuft animals.

However, when these children begin to grasp for a glimmer of hope in their effort to recover from the shock and dismay of this event, something as simple as a little teddy bear could make a difference ... it's that little extra that lets them know people care above and beyond the basic needs.

The basic needs are VITALLY important now, but I wanted to add this to the list so everyone here at DU has it to donate to in the future.

May everyone involved find the strength within themselves and in their brothers and sisters throughout the country to get through this.

We all depend on each other.

Peace.

180. If you want to send something in addition to cash, send ....
If you want to send something in addition to cash, the United Methodist Church's "UMCOR" disaster relief center in Mississippi is collecting "flood buckets" and "health buckets" for distribution along the Gulf.

The flood buckets involve people assembling a set of cleaning supplies that you can buy at dollar stores. The health buckets involve individuals assembling a set of personal hygiene items. You can then UPS then to the Mississippi center for distribution. It also is a good activity for young persons who want to help with more than just money.

The exact materials that are needed and the address are all provided at www.methodistrelief.org. They also are collecting the buckets at some other points, such in Philadelphia, Reading and Mechanicsburg PA. For example, for collection sites in eastern PA, see the news section of www.epaumc.org.

http://www.foodnotbombs.net/katrina.html

Food Not Bombs Needs Help Feeding The Victims of Katrina

Food Not Bombs groups all across the southern United States are feeding families displaced by Katrina. We need clothes, cooking equipment, food, cooks and money to provide for thousands of hungry homeless people.
People all over America have been calling Food Not Bombs asking what they can do to help the people made homeless by Hurricane Katrina. Food Not Bombs has started organizing buses, vans and truckloads of food, kitchen equipment and clothing to the people fleeing the disaster. It's a real honor that so many people are looking to Food Not Bombs to help. So far we have busloads of material support and volunteers from Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Dayton, Hartford, Tucson, and Saint Petersburg. Volunteers from the west are meeting in Houston and people from the east are meeting in Baton Rouge. The first Food Not Bombs kitchen is outside the Houston Convention Center. The Baton Rouge kitchen will be set up shortly. Please let us know if you can help.

Because this disaster may last 6 months to a year or more we intend to set up Food Not Bombs field kitchens throughout the region. Food Not Bombs is encouraging the refugees to participate in cooking, serving and collecting the food. Their participation may be one of the most therapeutic things we can provide. It is possible that as many as a million people will be homeless for the next 6 months as a result of this disaster.

In a few weeks many of these people will be considered regular members of America's homeless population. In 1989, Food Not Bombs fed the people made homeless by the earthquake and after a few weeks the working class victims were forgotten and faced the same problems as those who were homeless before the earthquake. Because this could be such a long crisis it may be better for us to teach people how to organize their own local Food Not Bombs group so they can provide long-term support.

There are some things you can do that can help us respond effectively to this disaster.

Organize a meeting this week - calling, emailing and posting flyers about the need for people to help and the day, time and location of the meeting.

At the meeting organize groups to call for food donations, another group to call for propane stoves, tanks of gas, tables and cooking equipment. Ask another group to get more volunteers.

Choose a time date and location of where your vehicles will gather to take the trip to the disaster area.

Organize a Food Not Bombs Katrina relief Concert in your town. We will need money for supplies for the next half a year but please try to organize concerts as fast as you can.

Stay in touch by emailing Katrina@foodnotbombs.net or calling 1-800-884-1136.
The Houston Kitchen can be called at 713-802-9642

SPCA help for animals
Friday, 9:50 p.m. (Sept 2)

There's hope for stranded pets in the New Orleans area. The Louisiana SPCA, New Orleans' animal control agency, has begun rescuing pets from owners houses.

Louisiana SPCA director Laura Maloney said shelter workers follow other agencies and crews through neighborhoods and rescue pets, some that are locked in houses. At the owners' request, "we break in," she said.

Owners have to call or email the operation and give their name and address and information about where the pet is confined.

The hotline number is: 1-225-578-6111. E-mail should be sent to Katrinaanimalrescue@yahoo.com .

The hotline already is in effect, Maloney said. "It's busy an awful lot. We are trying to get a bank of telephones"

Note: Some of you may have seen a message about an urgent need for animal foster care, with instructions to contact Lynda V at 203 515 3024 (cell) or 203 227 5308 (home) or email her at Lynda@portone.com . Your email message may get bounced back if her mailbox is full. When I called her home number Sept. 9, there was a recording saying they could not take information over the phone. Anyone willing to adopt or foster a pet should go to http://www.carams.org and fill out an application. Do not call carams.org -- they have their hands full right now, and need to keep their telephone lines open for emergencies.

210. Crates needed urgently 9/12
Rescued animals are taken to a staging area in Gonzales, Louisana
(LA). The land and water animal rescue teams have rescued so many stranded animals that they have overwhelmed the staging center in Gonzales, LA. A 24 hour moratorium on bringing animals to the staging area has been enacted. In the mean
time, rescue teams will spread out and deliver food and water to areas where they know animals are still present.

ALL the shelters need both WIRE CRATES and SHIPPING CRATES. Size
LARGE is most urgently needed. Wire crates are needed for housing the animals there because it's so hot. Shipping crates are needed for transporting animals to other shelters. But the Louisana state Veterinarian has a 15-day quarantine,
and would like pets to stay in Louisana for 30 days to give their
owners an opportunity to find them. This is causing shelters to fill up, which prevents additional rescues.

If you can donate crates (ask your local pet shops to DONATE the
crates), please ship them overnight if you can (ask the shipping companies to DONATE the shipping), to one of the following addresses:

Gonzales Temporary Animal Shelter (housing over 2000 animals already)
9093 Saint Landry Road
GONZALES, LA 70737

Or this triage center:

Jefferson Feed
4421 Jefferson Highway
Jefferson, LA 70121

Jefferson Feed is just one triage center that receives rescued pets
before they are transported to Gonzales. They are currently receiving only sick and injured pets because the Gonzales shelter is temporarily closed. When I
called this morning, they had only about 30 animals because they were told to
stop receiving/shipping to Gonzales yesterday afternoon. But when
they are receiving/shipping, they have had as many as 300 animals per day. So they could be inundated again as soon as the moratorium is lifted on Gonzales (which she hoped would be this afternoon).

Both of these zip codes appear to be ok for shipping by UPS, according to the UPS website. Be sure to ask UPS to donate the shipping expense.

From the ASPCA website: "In Gonzales, rescued animals are
decontaminated, vet checked, microchipped, fitted with a paper collar for identification, and have a record created. Then food, water, bedding and other comforts are provided and housing is found. There are now well over 1,000 animals being held
in Gonzales. With an EXPECTED INCREASE TO MANY THOUSANDS IN THE NEXT WEEK, keeping all these animals at one site may prove to be too enormous an undertaking -- especially at this bare-bones site."

So please, if you can donate crates, do so TODAY!! If you can't
donate a crate, call your local pet stores and ask if they will donate crates and ship them directly. Give them the shipping addresses. LARGE crates needed most. Wire and Vari-kennel type.

Your kids can raise enough money at a lemonaid stand in one afternoon to buy at least one crate - ask for Katrina Pets donations - if people know the
money is going to help Katrina victims, they'll pay $5 $10 $20 for a cup of lemonaid.

Please help. Every little bit helps. Thank you.

187. Shelter in URGENT need of supplies -- Veterans For Peace -- Covington, LA
Repost of anarchy1999 thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4649784#4653469
Two reports from Vets for Peace Camp in Covington. Want to help? URGENT!!

Here's how! We can keep the momentum up and this is an amazing way to get to help. Permission was granted for phone and e'mails before posting here.

Greetings All!
I just spoke with Dennis Kyne in Covington, LA. Our VFP Peace Tour group kept a shelter going and is working now hand-in-hand with Natl'l Guardsmen just in to town. They're continuing to cook and distribute meals - the propane kitchen on the bus has been the only working equipment in the community. They're continuing to assist with first aide & medical triage. Their generator has been the only operating system. Their satellite link has been one of the only reliable means of communications in the area.
They are no longer able to purchase any of the following in Baton Rouge or communities within reach of the Big Easy and need them desperately:

- baby formula, pre-mixed
- baby diapers
- dehydrated milk
- dehydrated eggs
- dehydrated potatoes
- feminine hygiene products (tampons, pads)
- ensure drink

We are sending a van tomorrow. We need the above items for that trip. Because of weight, we will only take part of the water collected, as diapers and other goods for this first trip weigh far less and the need for them is acute.
Vans are needed!
The VFP guys needs vans and pick-ups to distribute food and for search and rescue work. Vehicles donated to Veterans for Peace will be used for this purpose. Because they will be put to use and NOT RESOLD, donors can get full high-book value for their vehicles as a tax write-off. CALL ME (Dan) IF YOU HAVE OR KNOW OF A VEHICLE THAT CAN BE DONATED. Our first was donated this morning. THANKS TO SAM COLEMAN OF HUNTINGTON BEACH!!!!
I have spoken with Denise Reincke, Board Member for the Anaheim Union High School District. She has gotten approval for the AUHSD to run an ASB drive next week for dry-goods, etc. GOD BLESS ANAHEIM UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT & DR. FARLEY, THE NEW SUPT'D. Kids from 22 schools can collect a lot of diapers, et al! Veterans for Peace will ensure that those goods are delivered to Covington as a staging center for distribution!
We're looking for a staging point in a business or school site in central Orange County as I write. We will have multiple drop-off points within 24-hours, so thank you for your patience in holding goods until we announce where that will be. I've got a call into Dr. Farber to see if a school site can be used, but in the meantime, need locations.
We need volunteers to help man phones and coordinate all of this. If you can donate some high-energy and committed time to helping manage this, call.
We continue to need cash contributions. Call and we will make arrangements to receive your cash donation. Checks should be made out to Veterans for Peace and are deductible. Proceeds will be used SOLELY for transportation of goods to LA and for purchase of needed items. We will send collected goods down this week and early next, then transition remaining funds for use by our chapters in the mid-west and deep south to get goods more locally to the area. Our goal is to facilitate the distribution of at least two semi-loads per week into Covington through Veterans for Peace through the month of September. Since transportation costs are high, goods will be purchased more locally through the other chapters in the south and mid-west once the initial flurry out of So Cal is handled. It is more economical in the immediate to just get the stuff there. After a week, we'll continue to raise cash for other chapters, and the guys on the ground themselves in Louisiana to buy directly what is needed, eliminating transportation costs as soon as practical.
We're looking for truckers, we're looking for trucks, and we're looking for the money to get them there and back. We may have had a semi-truck donated, but will need help in making it operational , either as a donation to a trucking line following the need for it, and for it/them/him or her to operate it appropriately in the mean time.
We need Veterans and others who are willing to travel down on one of the deliveries and help out the folks in place there now. Alex Madrigal, VFPer from OC will take the first van tomorrow. Mark Ruter, another VFPer will leave Wednesday in his own van, and return after a week. They need relief drivers, travel companions and can bring at least one soul back in a week.
Our New Orleans chapter President is working triage at LSU and can use help, as can the Peace Bus VFP group on the ground in Covington. IF YOU ARE A FORMER MEDIC OR CORPSMAN, OR ARE A NURSE OR OTHER TRAINED PERSON, WE NEED YOU!!! Others with the willingness to pitch in are needed. Call me & we'll coordinate getting you in place and your skills in service helping people.
If anyone has or knows of portable water distillation stills we will truck them down as well.
We will also be looking for computer communications equipment to augment what is on the bus. If you've expertise in that arena, call and we'll coordinate with you to get those items in place. The existing equipment is now being used by Red Cross and others to help residents communicate with families, etc. outside of the area and more depth is required desperately!
THANKS FOR OPENING YOUR HEARTS, YOUR POCKET BOOKS AND YOUR COMMITMENT!!!
WE ARE SAVING LIVES AND GETTING DONE
WHAT SOME OTHERS SEEM TO JUST TALK ABOUT!!!
More later!!!!

Waging Peace!

190. katrinalodging.net
I just ran across this while browsing...don't really know anything about the organization myself...but it looked like a good idea and maybe it can help evacuees in need of housing. Since I don't know anything about it, if you are thinking of using it, it might be a good idea to check it out a bit first...

The site is apparently put up by a military organization, YourMilitary.com, and also has listings for evacuees trying to locate loved ones and job offers for survivors too.

191. Help the Hurricane Victims – Have your organization adopt a family!
Symphony orchestras across the nation are “adopting” Louisiana classical musicians, bringing them to the town where the symphony is located, and giving them jobs so that they can support themselves and their families for the eight months to a year it will take to get back to their jobs in Louisiana. The website doing the matching is the Adaptistration blog of Drew McManus.
http://www.artsjournal.com/adaptistration/archives/2005/09/louisiana_phil.html

The thought struck me that other professions could do something similar—teachers’ unions could work with teachers, law firms could give lawyers temporary jobs, accounting firms could give jobs to accountants, and so on. EVERY PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION OF ANY KIND COULD HELP.

To help those who don’t have a profession, churches could adopt families, which I understand they are in the process of doing, though I don’t have any examples at the moment. Unions could adopt families, as well.

I hope you will find a way to publicize these efforts and pass the ideas on to as many people as possible.

195. Habitat for Humanity has a Katrina response effort,
although they are not a relief organization, per se. They are planning on helping the homeowners who received housing through their programs rebuild.

Read more about it here:
http://www.habitat.org/disaster/2005/katrina/default.aspx

I also heard the president of the organization speak on Larry King, and he discussed the idea of a "House in a Box" that could be built modularly in one place, and then shipped to another (such as NO).

They are a great organization.

http://backpack.random-assortment.com/

Operation Backpack was featured on NPR this morning. It is a group of volunteers who are encouraging people to provide backpacks full of school supplies for children who were displaced by Katrina. They are recommending that the backpacks be mailed to school districts in the cities where many of the refugees have relocated, such as Houston. They also are collecting the backpacks at sites in the D.C. metropolitan area for shipping to the Gulf.

They stressed that the backpacks are not only important for school supplies, but also to give the kids a way to carry around their few remaining possessions.

SPECIAL NOTICE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

LOUISIANA STATE LIBRARY ISSUES URGENT CALL FOR COMPUTERS, PRINTERS
The State library of Louisiana has sent out this call for computer
equipment. If you are interested and able to send computers, here is
the request from the Louisiana State Librarian, Rebecca Hamilton.

"To all-we are in desperate need of computers/printers. We are being
inundated with evacuees needing to file FEMA applications,
unemployment, search for loved ones, etc. and are coming into our
public libraries to use the computers. Our libraries have greatly
extended their hours to accommodate the people but they need
additional computers and printers. If you can please put the word out
that if anyone wants to help immediately, this is our greatest need."

Equipment Specs:
* Pentium 3
* Windows 2000, prefer XP
* Laser printers if you can still get toner for them

Send equipment to:
State Library of Louisiana
701 North 4th Street
Baton Rouge, La. 70802-5232

If you are able to assist them, please let Rebecca know via email at
rhamilton@crt.state.la.us to help her know what to expect.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please kick this--most public libraries are hand to mouth as it is and unable to help. This is absolutely critical. Thanks.

208. another computer request -- Louisiana NAACP (laptops)
This is copied from the thread posted on Sept 7th by Tandalayo_Scheisskopf

"From John Aravosis at Americablog:

Please donate old laptop computers to the hurricane relief effort (seriously)
by John in DC - 9/07/2005 01:15:00 PM

Bob Brigham of Swing State Project and Macon Phillips of Blue State Digital are down in the hurricane region now, helping with relief efforts, and documenting the tragedy for the Web.

I just spoke to Bob, who is an old friend, and he and Macon, along with the local NAACP, have come up with a brilliant idea. They're using old donated laptops to set up centers around the area where people can check in to add their names to lists if they're looking for lost relatives, or were themselves lost, etc. Brilliant idea. But they need more laptops, at least 40 (but Bob said they can scale up to a couple hundred if they receive them).

So, if you have an old laptop computer that is Internet ready (meaning, it's a laptop that can accept a phone cord, has an ethernet card or a PC card for Internet purposes), please consider donating it asap. The donation IS tax-deductible, and if you include your name, address, and the value of the laptop, they can mail you a receipt for tax purposes.

Also note, they can also use desktop computers, and Macs are fine too - but please FEDEX the shipment so they can get moving fast.

Again, I know Bob, this is for real, he's running it - no scam here folks, I personally vouch that this is for real.

You can FedEx your old laptop to:

Louisiana NAACP
1755 Nicholson Drive
Baton Rouge, LA 70802

And again, include your name and address and the value of the laptop if you'd like a receipt for tax purposes. Feel free to spread the message, this is very cool."

Hi everyone, Brendan from Political Switchboard again. I'm running the VFPRoadTrips Forums and we are going to have a very busy few weeks.

Since many of you turned out at Camp Casey I thought some of you would like to help with Camp Casey in Covington LA. Or as they are calling it now Camp Casey III.

The VFP Crew lead by Dennis Kyne ( http://denniskyne.com/ ) is on scene exhausted but still moving because people are still dying.

We need:

IT people to help with the forums and connecting people.
Donations in the form of ready to go Family Packs, more information in the forums ( http://vfproadtrips.org/katrina/ ) and we need strong people willing to work hard and confront obstacles. This is NOT a protest, it is a rescue and relief mission.

Maps are on the home page ( http://vfproadtrips.org )

Buddy Spell sends his best to everyone here. Smudge is home safe and sound. There is an ebay auction up for a small painting of him. Check ( http://MichaelMoore.com ) for more on that.

Oh and FoodNotBombs ( http://foodnotbombs.net/ ) just showed up as well I heard.

Peace

211. National Congress of American Indians (call for HELP!)
We need not forget our Native peoples. Many lived in Louisiana/Mississippi, and other areas stricken by Katrina.

Here is a call for the Director of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) for help.

***************************

Dear Friends and Family,

I work as the Director of Development for the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI). NCAI the oldest and largest Indian organization in the U.S. and we represent more than half of the country's American Indian tribes.

Immediately after we received word of the disaster left by Hurricane
Katrina, NCAI created a fund to help the Indian tribes in Louisianna,
Mississippi and Alabama who were affected. Let me tell you that American Indian tribes are consistently overlooked and always the last to receive any assistance, if any. On Friday, we talked with a representative from one Indian tribe who said the homes and land of every tribal member in their community was completely demolished, it was very sad.

The money from the NCAI Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund will go directly back to those tribes affected so that they may rebuild their communities. If you or your family is interested please make a donation, the information is
below.

May you always walk in beauty and may the creator bless you.

Sincerely
Mellor C. Willie

I heard about them from an interview with the station manager of WWOZ, New Orleans' community radio, currently "in exile". WWOZ themselves might just be a worthy cause:

Unfortunately, I can't trust the Red Cross anymore.

How you can help LGBT victims of Katrina

As a massive relief effort gets under way in response to the overwhelming devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, many gays and lesbians are asking how they can help. In most cases monetary donations are the best way to show support, but if you happen to live near the affected areas and were untouched by the devastation, you may also want to consider volunteering your time or opening up your home to displaced victims. Here are some gay organizations that are currently coordinating relief efforts:

The Metropolitan Community Church has set up a Katrina Relief Center at www.mccchurch.org/katrina/index.html. For more information contact Connie Gilpin at MCC of the Living Spring at region2communications@mccchurch.org. Or contact the Reverend Kurt Krieger at (816) 931-0750; (816) 210-5443; or region2kurt@yahoo.com.

The gay-focused Rainbow World Fund has partnered with America's Second Harvest in its Hurricane Katrina Relief Campaign. Donations to the fund will go to provide meals and groceries, transport food to survivors, and secure additional warehouse space to assist food banks in resuming and maintaining operations. Donate at www.rainbowfund.org/donate

The National Youth Advocacy Coalition has formed a Hurricane Katrina LGBT Relief Fund to ensure that LGBT youth and families receive the critical support they need to regain stability in their lives. The group has partnered with Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere, The Family Pride Coalition, The Mautner Project: The National Lesbian Health Organization, National Black Justice Coalition, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, among others. Contributions can be made at www.nyacyouth.org.

Pride Houston has partnered with the New Orleans Mayor's Office to raise money for gay and lesbian victims in the greater New Orleans area. For more information visit www.pridehouston.org.

The Houston GLBT Community Center has established a “center to center” fund to benefit the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of New Orleans. Call (713) 524-3818, or go to www.houstonglbtcommunitycenter.org.

The gay rights group Garden State Equality has arranged to accept donations for the pro-gay Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge to benefit victims of the hurricane. Call Steven Goldstein at (917) 449-8918. Checks can also be sent directly to the Reverend Steve J. Crump, 8470 Goodwind Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70810

RainbowRelief.org is coordinating efforts to house GLBT victims of the hurricane. The group does not accept donations, only offers to provide housing. Anyone who is in need of housing or wishes to provide it should go to the Web site or call Brandon Burch at (913) 515-0317.

The Center for Artistic Revolution in Arkansas is currently working to help LGBT Katrina refugees in Arkansas. They have created a resource base of LGBT Arkansans and allies who are willing to offer housing and other help. They can be reached at 501-603-2138 or ArtchangesU@yahoo.com or through www.artisticrevolution.com.

The Arizona Human Rights Fund and Foundation is coordinating efforts to house gay victims of the hurricane in Arizona. Call (602) 650-0900, e-mail info@ahrf.org. or visit www.ahrf.org.

If your organization is coordinating relief efforts in the aftermath of the hurricane, please contact the editors of The Advocate at news@advocate.com, and we will include you in future postings on Advocate.com.

Gay groups expand help for Katrina victims
Larry Buhl, PlanetOut Network
published Tuesday, September 6, 2005

More than a week after a hurricane set off a cascade of destruction and misery in New Orleans and parts of the Gulf coast, the gay community continues to coalesce in offering money, support and information to LGBT survivors.

Ellen DeGeneres and the Rainbow World Fund are now joined by the Hurricane Katrina LGBT Relief Fund, which is a combined effort from more than a dozen LGBT groups, including Equality Federation, Family Pride Coalition and the National Center for Lesbian Rights.

Spearheaded by the National Youth Advocacy Association (NYAC), the Hurricane Katrina LGBT Relief Fund was set up on Tuesday to "ensure that LGBT youth and families, among the most vulnerable members of our community, receive the critical support they need to regain stability in their lives," said Craig Bowman, Executive Director of NYAC.

The fund will provide clothing, food, water and financial assistance to members of the LGBT community affected by the hurricane. Bowman told the PlanetOut Networks his organization is earmarking funds to LGBT people directly, to "keep them from falling through the cracks."

He added that the group is creating a mechanism to match people in need with specific community resources. Donations can be sent online.

Another fund is more local in focus, and not only provides money but also offers a clearinghouse of information to those displaced by the disaster. The Pride Houston Hurricane Relief Fund, at pridehouston.org, was launched by the Montrose Counseling Center along with Pride Houston and Larry Bagneris, executive director of the New Orleans Human Relations Commission.

214. Doubt about Contributions
I hope I'm not the only one to doubt where my contributions are actually going. Some of the best known relief agencies send only 50% of donations to the actual victims. Even the best relief organizations have a substantial overhead. Could there be a way where donors could be matched directly with victims? It could be organized by priority, where people that were "greater" victims received more donors.

216. Not sure if this would be a place to post this
Anyway, I've come up with a project to help in the only way I really know how. I've decided to collect 500 computers to give to families and individuals affected by the hurricane after they begin to rebuild. If you are interested in helping, please visit the site I've set up http://computersforkatrina.com This is currently a SW Ohio project only, but if it generates enough interest I will expand to include other regions.

I've never set anything charitable up before, so I'm not sure yet what steps I need to take to legally accept donations, but I'll be looking into it over the next several days.

If you have some free time, and are computer savvy in the SW Ohio area, feel free to drop me a line.

Again, sorry if I am posting this in the wrong area, but I am a first time poster, but a long time reader.

Local relief efforts Rebuild Green There will be a struggle over how to rebuild our devastated city. Their mission is to inspire, assist, organize and develop, young people of all ages, in and out of school, to be skilled community focused leaders, resiliently and creatively empowering themselves and their communities to affect positive change. This organization was already strained financially before Katrina. Funding and training for developmentally disabled people PHP Charities We are the charitable funding arm of Progressive Healthcare Providers, a 501 c(3) non-profit organization that serves the developmentally disabled in 3 southeastern states. Our homes in New Orleans have been severely impacted by the flooding with 20 of our 26 homes there underwater. All of our people in New Orleans had been evacuated to Baton Rouge before the storm but just about everyone has lost virtually all of their clothes and personal possessions. It will be months before their lives will even begin returning to normal but they need help now. If you want to help, please make a contribution by check made payable to "PHP Charities" and send it as soon as possible. Checks should be mailed to: PHP Charities, 325 Elmira Place, NE Atlanta, GA 30307. The phone number is (404) 525-7301.

Collecting Donations The Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore The Shrines of the Black Madonna of the Pan African Orthodox Christian Church (PAOCC) has opened its doors to many of our displaced brothers and sisters. Through Operation Safe Harbor, the PAOCC and the Founders Vision Community Development Corporation are providing housing, meals, social service direction and ministerial counseling to our guests.

Because most of these displaced individuals and their families have come with little more than the clothes on their backs, their need far exceeds our capacity to provide them with all the assistance required. Providing meals alone costs roughly $1,500 per day ($10 per person/150 persons). Thus, our church is asking you or your organization/church/community center to assist as able. Donations of money, clothing, food, hygiene and medical supplies can be dropped off at the following PAOCC sites:

POC-led organizing that includes direct support and communication with prisoners and family members in New Orleans Critical Resistance Critical Resistance is a national organization working to end the reliance on prisons and policing. We have three offices -- one of which was in New Orleans. Our Southern Regional office -- now destroyed -- in New Orleans' Mid City neighborhood became Critical Resistance's hub for the entire South, along with a center for organizing around imprisonment and police brutality in New Orleans itself. Critical Resistance members are working on a coordinated response that includes direct support and communication with prisoners and family members in New Orleans, supporting the Treme community, strategizing around rebuilding and reuniting neighborhoods, and media work, along with working to rebuild our Southern Regional hub in New Orleans. There are many ways to help. Here are a few:
1) Please help support the rebuilding of our Southern Regional office and organizing in New Orleans through our website. You can also write a check made out to 'Critical Resistance/Justice Now', and mail it to 1904 Franklin Street, Suite 504, Oakland, CA 94612. Please write 'New Orleans' in the memo.

2) Critical Resistance members across the country are working on a coordinated response. If you want to get involved in a chapter near you -- there are 11 in the United States -- please visit here to get in touch.

3) Do you have computers, printers, a copier, file cabinets, or other office supplies? Please call us at 510-444-0484, or email crnational@criticalresistance.org to talk about getting those to us. We also need frequent flier miles for our work.

4) Organize a house party to raise funds to help rebuild our Southern office and fuel our organizing in New Orleans. You can also call us at 510-444-0484 or email crnational@criticalresistance.org for materials and ideas.

Connecting evacuees with resources
Katrina InfoShare Collective "The main objective as of now is connecting people to , and to each other. This entails creating an info packet: a concise resource guide containing pertinent
phone and internet listings, job leads, welfare info, places to get food, public transportation guide, a map of the city, and more. A short range radio station will be set up in one of the large shelters as well, relaying news in real-time, broadcasting people's stories and re-connecting the lost. Radios will be distributed among the evacuees to listen to the broadcasts. Volunteers will be on-site at the shelters, distributing the info packets and radios, and talking to those who need an ear.

In addressing the immediate needs of this crisis, participants in KIS are hoping to plan for the long-term as well. Many are permanently displaced from the submerged New Orleans, and those who hope to return will have to wait until the water is drained and the city rebuilt. This will undoubtedly put a new stress on Houston and other nearby cities for some time to come, and our aid will have to sustain the new demands."

2) Volunteer: Come and help us walk through the shelters, find people, help folks apply for FEMA assistance, figure out what needs they have, match folks up with other members willing to take people in. FRAUD ALERT: Much of the direct assistance to Katrina evacuees is coming from informal community networks, which deserve our trust and support even if they aren't "official." But there has also been some fraud in donation-collection, mostly via websites. Please trust community-led work, but use common sense and caution when donating to groups you don't know.

221. Comedian / Musician Eric Schwartz Fundraiser for Katrina Relief, NYC 9/28
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 10:50 AM by IanDB1
Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005
From: Eric Schwartz Mailing List webmaster@ericschwartz.com
Subject: Cornelia street, Hurricane relief CD stuff

Greetings All.

It is with great pleasure that I announce my first "real" NYC gig in some time.

I'm playing at the Cornelia Street Cafe in charming Greenwich Village on Wednesday, September 28th. Cornelia Street Cafe is located at 29 Cornelia Street.

http://www.corneliastreetcafe.com/

One set in this landmark location for "Soul Of The Blues" with a full Jazz band: Kevin So on piano, John Sobel on Bass, and Gene "Groovelily" Lewin on drums.
The cafe has great food. Come for din din. I'm on third, at around 10 or so. So come early and watch the other 2 acts...Will Scott and Ben Ratliff.
I, in fact, will be playing more Jazz stuff than Soul or Blues but I'll try to come up with something to justify the name.
Please come down to this great venue and clap yo' hands and snap yo' fingers.

And one more thing: All proceeds this week from my CD sales from CDBABY.com are now going to the Katrina relief effort. So if you'd like to help out and get a nifty gift for a friend at the same time, now's your chance.

Thanks a bunch, and take care.

Eric

223. I have two questions: Is Shreveport in the damaged area? How can
we get a family name of refugees to help? Many people up here get a family (ages, sex, needs, etc.) from the Salvation Army so they can give the family a Christmas "shower". Often it is a church or civic group that does this. I would like to do this for a refugee family from the NO flood area. If Shreveport is in that area then I already have the family.

227. Want to Donate to Deaf Hurricane Relief?
Mr Fuzz will be going to Louisianna, Oct. 17 to deliver a check from the Rochester Deaf Rotary Club (the first and only Deaf Rotary Club in the world--Mr. Fuzz is one of the founders and is a Louisiana native, LSD alumni).

If you would like to send a check to arrive at the Louisianna School for the Deaf Foundation, send it to

Louisianna School for the Deaf Foundation-Hurricane Relief
Attn: Trish Mann
P. O. Box 3074
Baton Rouge, LA 70821-3074

Check made out to LSDF

Thank You to anyone who feels moved to do this!
