FAUX ANCHOR says there is a difference between looting to sustain |

life and looting for opportunity.
:wow:
The reporter however in his wisdom shoots her down.

12. I'm not saying this isn't wrong, but why is CNN just showing |

the sensational looting problems only? I'm not watching but it seems from the posts on DU that this is all they are focusing on. They should be showing the WHOLE picture. Desperate people trying to survive, and many drowned it seems. But I guess this would make our illustrious President look bad.

27. But what if they are stealing that stuff because they |

have lost everything, have no insurance and need to find a way to provide for themselves or their families in the days to come?
I don't advocate stealing, either, but I am not in that situation. If I had no way to provide for my kids, you can bet your damned ass I would steal. I would steal anything and everything I could get my hands on with not one regret.

Potent enough liquor could be used as a sterilizing agent. That water, with everything that's in it, and in those temperatures, is going to be incredibly septic. Anybody who's been wounded, even minimally, is going to need treatment, and they probably don't have nearly enough antibiotics for everyone.

Aside from drinking, alcohol does indeed have medicinal purposes . . . but it's not likely that it would be stolen for this reason, especially if the "sterilizing" alcohol is on the shelf, and the "pleasure" alcohol is being stolen . . .

17. I am watching local Baton Rouges TV stations |

The looters are not starving. They have filled garbage cans full of jewelry, electronics, TVs, and stuff that is not for immediate survival. The looting is now totally out of control, and the police can't do much about it. In biloxi, people are on the waterfront taking everything that isn't nailed down. They seem to like the go-carts and recreational vehicles, just pushing them down the street. Witnesses are describing the looting in N.O. and Biloxi as being like downtown Baghdad. The police are still in search and rescue mode, and so have better things to do than dealing with the looters. May I remind you people who are so concerned about looters who may be mis-understood and mis-treated, that New Orleans is a Blue, Democrat stronghold. Many of our DUers, or at least other "Blue" homes and businesses are being looted. It's sickening, and I don't mean those poor, poor looters who are hungry.

have had an evacuation plan in place to evacuate everyone, not just those who could afford to leave. Telling people to leave isn't good enough. You have to have a plan in place to evacuate the poor, the elderly and the handicapped who might not be able to take care this themselves.
We had a long thread on Sunday about airlifting people out in helicopters, putting public buses and boats to use to evacuate people, but nothing was done. Of course the National Guard are mostly in Iraq, so whatever assets they had are not here. Mr. Bush has a lot of 'splaning to do.
These people were essentially left behind to drown and I find that dispicable.

if offered the opportunity. Just a little story. Years ago when I was hiking with a friend outside of Fairbanks, Alaska, we got caught in a forest fire. We were rescued by soldiers who were coming to fight the fire from the nearest army base and taken to a safe place in town. When offered the rescue, we didn't sit there and say, no we'll wait it out in the nearest body of water, which is what we would have had to do if we hadn't been rescued.

is they fear looters. And it's the very people who are not well positioned to take care of themselves that have the greatest fears.
I agree the government has done a poor job.
But that doesn't excuse in any way the exploitation of the bad situation.

47. LIke I said we have disasters like this all the time in California |
|
like earthquakes and fires. They evacuate people for fires. Earthquakes you have no warning for. Some home owners stay behind to try to save their property by hosing everything down as long as they are able to get water. Some looting happens, but not very much really. In the wooded areas around the perimeters of wilderness areas, there are trailer parks full of desperately poor people, yet the authorities make a point of getting these people out too. Imagine if they were left behind, I am sure they would loot too out of necessity and maybe even out of greed, but since our usually Democratic government officials care, they make an effort to save these people. This didn't happen in Louisiana.

41. Let's see, you're in a disaster area, |
|
Your house and everything you own has just be demolished, you are poor and have no insurance to replace anything.
All of these fat cat stores have insurance, and will be claiming virtually everything inside as a loss, whether it actually was or not.
Yeah, I can understand the motivation for looting now. Not that I condone it mind you, but I do understand the motivation for it.
These folks are picking up a little nest egg to get them started back on the path to a normal existence, everything they had is gone, and they have no way other than this to replace things. The stores are just going to claim it on insurance, thus the store owner isn't out the money.
Like I said, I understand the motivation, even though I don't condone it.
And it also seems to me that the coverage of this is being done in a very bigotted, biased manner. The MSM is covering the few to paint the many with a very broad, racist brush. Sad, very sad.

|
won't even succeed, that's how on the edge they are, and people's homes are being looted as well.
And the stores that make big insurance claims get big increases in premiums, which they pass on to the customers.
No matter how you slice it whether it's Katrina or looters the victims are the same.
