Does anybody know if The Netherlands has been asked for NOLA advice? |
|
Seems to me that they are the experts in this sort of calamity.

I think the original poster was probably referring to most of their country being situated below sea level, their use of dikes, canals, and wind power to prevent flooding.

7. Exact;ly what I meant... It is too late or too early for that. |
|
And their last serious experience with flooding was 50 years ago... So, it is probably worthless.

3. But they know about disastrous floods |
|
Much of the country is below sea level, and they suffered a catastrophic flood in 1953, which killed 1,800 people. http://www.technologyreview.com/articles/05/04/issue/feature_gp_netherlands.asp

We did 2 things: 1. Build the Deltaworks: http://www.deltawerken.com/Deltaworks/23.html 2. Grow taller. Have to admit this takes time, but we are now the tallest people in the world. I stopped at 6 9 myself and then moved to AZ ;-)

in elevators asked that question, but no I don't. Someone once suggested to me answering that by asking "Do you play mini-golf?" in return, but that doesn't always contribute to a better atmosphere, as I've found out...

9. After flooding in 1995 when my parents-in-law had to be evacuated |

from Tiel (small town in river lowlands of Holland) to us in The Hague, the Dutch have continuing experience, studies, expertise, and plans for future dangers of rising water from rivers and the sea.
Yes, they probably will have much advice to offer the re-building and stronger defences for New Orleans.

8. The flood was 50 years ago, so this is probably not worth it |
|
Their experience is with protecting themselves against flooding, which could be very useful for the future, but right now, it is either too late or too early.

If they lost 1800 people in a flood in 1953 how are they good at stopping flooding?

I don't think that the Netherlands will have any particular advise to give on the recovery. They might have a lot of advise to give on rebuilding, assuming that LA decides to rebuild.

Netherlandians (?? LOL) with them. Can't remember if it was the mayor, or the FEMA guy, or something.
But I remember hearing Netherlands. It sounded weird to me until I considered their past.
