I need help fast!
My 17 year old daughter is planning on going to a meeting at our local GOP office tonight. Her friends work there part time for $9.00 an hour and she wants to make that kind of money, too. (I live in a red suburb of a purple state...Iowa.)

I told her tonight that I would never sell my soul to the devil for a lousy $9.00 an hour. I also told her that I would pay the difference if she would just find a minimum wage job anywhere else. The lure of a good paying part time job with her friends is winning this argument.

My daughter isn't political but she thinks of herself as a Democrat. I feel like a failure as a parent since she obviously cares more about money than her values. What should I do?

Aargh!

4. "Lay down with dogs, get up with fleas."
You do NOT want your daughter spreading Republican filth. I suggest she start doing some serious volunteer work at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or crisis line if she wishes to continue living in your home. You have my deepest sympathies that her "teenage rebellion" stage is such a ... disappointing ... thing.

I would also highly recommend drug testing, because something is seriously wrong with that girl. Sigh....

8. Look at it as an opportunity for good discussions
Sounds like she would probably do administrative stuff and talk to her friends during work. I would be surprised if there was a lot of political discussions taking place, but if there is, make it an opportunity to discuss the Democratic viewpoint on the issues discussed. Exposure to different view points is a good thing for her and she'll learn more about politics, the world, and herself because of it.

10. Money is more important than most things at that age...
She has to learn from her own mistakes. Just be sure to keep her up to speed with what the GOP is doing so she can't be brainwashed by them.

15. If she occupies the position, takes their nine bucks away from them,
but doesn't actually hit a lick it's all to the good.

Tell her that all those talks you've had about "a day's work for a day's pay" no longer apply. :)

17. Sometimes falling into the snake pit opens eyes.
If you offer her guidance about what she sees and hears, it could be a good learning experience. I'll bet she looks for new friends after that too.

I think it's a bad idea to bribe her not to work for them. She has to know the real world isn't that way. And let's face it, we all have to work for Republicans every now and then.

19. The way Americans are seeing the GOP politicians blowing off crisis now
she will likely be hearing a whole lotta new and colorful language if she works for the GOP. It might be a good education for her and chances are she won't want to put up with it for long.

Just be there with the lines of communication open. A lot of parenting at this stage is damage control. They are gonna make some dumb choices, but you can keep the damage down by being there and keeping the communication going. Means listening as well as pleading ;)

She will probably be a smarter voter for the exposure.

Sending you my best wishes for a good outcome.

Strength,
hm

but that's just temporary.) If she does take the job, maybe you could have an arrangement where the two of you every day have to discuss things that come up at her work so that she sees both sides of the situation.

If done correctly, it could be a real learning experience. She just needs to go in aware that they're really, really good at not telling the truth in a way that comes across as the truth to people who aren't onto the rules in their playbook. Do you feel on top of the issues enough to do this? If not, you always have us!

25. Yes I do.
I know why I'm a Democrat, why I've always been a Democrat. I think I can talk issues with her in a way that she can relate...women's right to choose our health care, the environment, human rights issues, issues that are important to me.

31. What kind of work will she be doing ?
Stuffing envelopes, packing boxes of campaign materials, updating mailing lists and phone numbers? It will probably all be pretty boring and frankly not particularly political. I would let her do it - however, I would draw the line at "crowd duty".
