CINDY, PLEASE DON'T PROTEST BLUE ANGELS
BRUNSWICK — The Navy's fighter demonstration team, the Blue Angels, returns to Brunswick next month after a six-year absence, and standing nearby to protest the display of military power will be the nation's most prominent peace activist, Cindy Sheehan. Sheehan gained national attention this month by staging a vigil outside President Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas. She is scheduled to join a group of local war protesters who will march from the Brunswick Mall to the Brunswick Naval Air Station on the morning of Sept. 10, her publicist confirmed Monday.

Anti-war protesters are expected to stage a rally outside the main gate Saturday. The rally's featured speaker will be Sheehan, whose son was killed while serving in Iraq. She will speak to the group about her experiences in trying to gain a meeting with the president.

*******************************************************************
I don't see how protesting a military base, especially one that has been slated to be closed by BRAC helps her cause. I can't continue to support her if she goes along with this.

14. Mmmm
The spokeswoman, Jessica Smith of Fenton Communications, a Washington, D.C.-based public relations firm, said Sheehan canceled a trip to Italy to participate in the Brunswick rally.

23. why did you emphasize italy?
i'm not sure what you're trying to say-
my point is that when cindy starts having a publicist, she loses some of that homegrown/homespun quality that makes her cause work.

32. She is not Cindy's publicist.
Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 07:31 PM by uppityperson
I have heard rightwingers and counterprotestors complaining that Cindy has people helping her, and people and groups who have joined in the protest and are backing her now, and this is bad. This is not about Cindy. She is the face of the movement, the galvanizing force, but it is about Bush and the Iraq occupation and all of us. Rather like Rosa Parks is one big face for the civil rights movement, but the civil rights movement was not about Ms. Parks.

What makes her cause work is all of us getting involved and demanding accountability from Mr.bush, and congress, and getting the hell out of Iraq. That is what will make her cause work.

And she definetly needs and appreciates people helping her and coordinating stuff and getting involved since this is about bush and Iraq and all of us.

27. Really?
OK.

Handle two dozen visits to all corners of the country, including every request for radio, TV and print media interviews, plus accomodations and logistics for travel. Yourself.

That's what publicists do. If she didn't have one, she'd have no time for anything else but making plans.

Give me a break.

39. yes, really-
as i've said previously, having a publicist detracts somewhat from the homespun(?) quality that she started out with...imho.

I am still entitled to my opinion, aren't i?

it might be that her publicist was mentioned for that very reason- i'm not familiar with the political leanings of the newspaper/reporter responsible for the article linked to the original post.

but- does she or doesn't she...?
another respondant to my post claims the woman is not cindy's publicist- and you seem to be saying she is...

and i don't begrudge her having a publicist, btw- i was only commenting on the perception it can create in people's minds.

No bias or twisting that I can tell. She'll be there. She's the featured speaker.

Guess you'll have to drop your support.

31. Uhm actually it is pretty biased she is not going there to protest the
military or its "power". She is going there to speak out against the war in Iraq and hopefully put a stop to needless wars in the future.

Though i do understand wher you may be coming from, Cindy is pretty damn focused on that.

28. She has been protesting the war for quite awhile.
The only thing that is new is the publicity.

If people start saying they are against the war - but only if being against it does not hurt their local economy - then the protests are meaningless. You are either against the war or you are not. I am against it. Period.

And I fully support Cindy in her protests as well.

35. Nothing, not one damn thing, will stop the truth now.
No amount of belly-aching or nit-picking or "second thoughts".

No Rovian tricks, no "swift-boating", no lies will stop what has started.

So I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.

The country will right what what Bush has disrupted, whether you like or support Cindy, or whether you don't.
